Tristen Newton is now a Point God

They call them classics because they stand the test of time.

Congratulation UConn Fans!

Victorious!

Yes, Tristan Newton had moments of excellence throughout the season & was really fantastic tonight in the championship game.

However, I am glad that UConn will have real point guard talent coming in next season, more of a coach on the floor than Tristen.

Unfortunately, Tristan was a human turnover machine all year long, even today when he absolutely had to take care of the ball.

Tristan's ball-handling skills are shaky. He often gets trapped (by himself) in corners because he doesn't have great court vision or the muscle to dribble out of it like AJAX does.

Tristan's outside shooting is not great. Often his shooting line was 2-8. Paradoxically, he nails his free throws, a must for a point guard.

Newton can drive, but he can't finish well at the rim because he's not a leaper, has no left hand or many moves, & is not strong enough to get a clean shot in off the backboard. He definitely does not have a Big East guard type of body strength.

Tristan often seems to take a whole half to wake up & often wilted under the pressure of trapping defenses.

So Newton often failed as much as he succeeded as the "appointed point guard" of a team whose other guards could not fill the bill for longer than a few minutes. He did a fair job for a guy who had the ball longer than any other Huskie & who often killed the clock & timing of plays by over-dribbling too much.

Congratulations to national champion Tristan Newton. But the Huskies can improve with a true point guard who can see the floor AND Shoot. Someone who is stronger.

Great year guys!

, can’t imagine giving a backhanded compliment to a kid who helped will us to a victory today.

You should maybe take Andrea Hurleys advice

Weird the one the fan base was roasting all year long carried us.... let's go newton!!!!
I criticized him as much as anyone but i said this team will not make a run if he does not play as well hes capable of. He played great this whole tournament and deserves a lot of the credit. Hes a legend in my book. All is forgiven.

Given the timing this might be the most pathetic post in the history of this board.

And from the loser who told everyone who’d listen that Iona was going to win in round one.

I can’t be the only one who won’t miss your “back in the day” nonsense. Best of luck to St. John’s next year.

What the hell is wrong with you

Newton had a double-double and almost a triple double if you combine his assists and turnovers. An imperfect game? Or a great game against a stubborn defense.

.-.
He's always turned it over too much and outside of a few game bad spell he's always been really good. The threat of the deep three, the passing, the driving and drawing fouls. He's really good. He will be our all-time enigma player. So many people who follow the team on this board and in the national media say we don't have a point guard. Yet we have this post guard and he's always smiling on the court and always smiling and giggling off the court.

People can't seem to wrap their head around him but he's very good. After his sloppy play in the first 4 minutes he was the best player on the floor and he had 8 assists in the semifinals.

I kind of remember reading your first few posts here and thinking you had an interesting take on things. Former player, played on the NYC playgrounds a long time ago, UConn fan.

This is just a nasty post and a post from someone who doesn't know the game. I had the wrong read on you. You're not a UConn basketball fan and you're doing one of the strangest troll jobs I've seen in a long time.

Count to 5.

San Diego State made the decision to get up on our guards, pressure the ball, disrupt the offense, defend the jump shooters and deny the entry pass to Sanogo.

Tristen is really the only guard we have who could’ve exploited that with the dribble drive.

And he did.

This team had so many answers.

Champions all.

It was a funky game and we were far from our best. Had a million opportunities to blow it open and make the killshot and never did until a few minutes left. Still won by over 15, shows how good this team was tournament time. Adama remained the rock, Jordan still hit the big shot, and Tristen made the plays.

Stomped all over everyone in the tournament. One of our truly special teams and we have had a lot of them.

Tristen is a legend now. Congrats to him. He was our best player last night! He’s been an acquired taste since we have been so spoiled at lead guard but whenever he was aggressive all year, good things happened over and over again.

Like my favorite Husky said in 2004, they “immortalized themselves”!!!

Thank you Tristen!!!! No sane person doubts now!

This fanbase is just brutal on point guards for whatever reason. Maybe because we have been spoiled over the years. If a wing or guard makes mistakes, there are a lot more excuses. Not every PG is going to average 17+ a game. Newton was much more than servicable (as was Cole last year).

Maybe it's because the game has changed. The ball dominant guard who dribbles 35x a possession with a 40% usage rate is not how this team is built, or will be built in the near future. We have an egaliatarian offense. Everyone can score, shoot, dribble, pass. And it makes us unguardable at times.

At the end of the day, he had a better than 2:1 A:TO ratio and averaged 10 a game...perhaps most importantly---clutch FTs.
