Tripp Doherty to the NBA

Oh man. Love Tripp. Best wishes to him, he’s going to be crazy successful wherever he lands.

Staff turnover always sucks but good to see our guys moving up in their careers. Any ideas of what the recruiting and video director actually does on a daily basis?

This is a big loss for us. He was a really active part of our player’s lives. Assistant to Bouknight’s agent? He would have been an assistant here in short order. Danny’s ability to keep people around was once viewed as a strength.

Not bad, not bad at all!

But yeah, as I said in the TB post, they can rearrange these assigned roles with the right mix of new and old to get them where each is best matched. Tripp was kind of maxed out with what he could do at the college level, but he got to work with UConn basketball (not without personal sacrifice for him), which was an absolute dream moment achieved. Go be great, Tripp!

Seriously?

I don’t understand why people equate staff members taking advantage of professional opportunities and advancement as an indication that Coach Hurley is running staff members off or that staff retention isn’t a strength. SMDH.

He's moving up in his career in the best way possible. Tripp wouldn't be a good assistant coach--he has no meaningful playing experience or deep aau connections.

Because New Englanders in general and Nutmeggers in particular are inherently pessimistic.

If we can’t successfully replace the director of whatever we have real world UCONN Basketball Problems. Nothing to see here.

From the tweet this being an internal hire leads me to believe Paul Wetteman will be his replacement. UConn alum, former student and graduate manager with the team. Still with program for last 7 years and already does a lot of work around recruiting as Assistant Director of Men’s Basketball Operations.

Is it typical for an NBA player to hire a personal manager? I thought that was part of an agent's job.

It's pretty common, I think the majority of players have someone doing it although the titles vary. It is the agent's job in a sense, because the manager like Tripp is working for the agency. The bigger companies are just able to divide responsibilities where a smaller agency is going to have fewer clients so the agent can handle more

No idea what Tripp's ambitions are, but this is a great foot in the door to the business side of the NBA. Obviously this is a .01% outcome but this is similar to how Rich Paul and Maverick Carter got their start. Friends with LeBron, worked as his managers while he was with CAA/Leon Rose and then eventually left and started their own companies with LeBron (LRMR Marketing for Carter, Klutch Sports for Paul)

It’s a glorified assistant.

The agent generally hires them for the player and the person is employed by the agency.

These guys have a ton of obligations and someone needs to deal with the big details right down to the little details like cousin Al needing a ticket to tomorrow’s game.
