StJ gonna be loaded / easily preseason best roster. How does Dan Hurley keep up now?

From pure talent they have the most talented roster in the country. Big question mark at point guard but Pitino with that kind of talent is scary, we saw what they did this past season and they had nowhere near this much talent.

UConn and St. John's both going to be preseason top 5 and could possibly be preseason #1 and #2 depending on how power forward shakes out for us.

Why not? At this point he feels like a redundant add, would stir the coup. I don’t think Hurley want to bottleneck the back court further after the Adams sitch. That said it does make you wonder if waiting/signing guys like him trump freshmen. I’d say yes.

Would you rather have a Desmond Claude or a frosh?
depends on their respective NIL. Mullins could be commanding less and therefore be a better value even if he isn’t as productive. We don’t have an unlimited budget unfortunately. I Think Mullins also has a higher upside as a sophomore. I wouldn’t want staff to stop planning more than 1 season out just because slick Rick is.

I don't think any school that had a top 5 portal class has went far in the tournament since they started tracking it. Except for NC State I think? And even they were a Cinderella.

Here are the rankings to check out.

And is Hopkins truly healthy?

Hard to build chemistry with a team of one year portal rentals.

Their team was new last season outside of second year Luis, Zuby, and Wilcher and they ran away with the Big East. They seriously upgraded their talent and depth and have 3 year mainstay Zuby. Look at Duke this season, 5 of their top 6 guys were one year rentals.

Louisville was certainly better this past season than the year before. Mostly because they had a new coach.

But I'd agree with you, having a team full of new transfers hasn't worked for teams so far. The extreme movement through the portal has escalated even more this year. Will be interesting to see how it works out for everyone.

It makes sense for a new coach to do it like Pope and Calipari did last year because they want to bring in their own guys.

But after a few years I don't think its healthy for a program to constantly have to break a whole lineup of new guys into their system.

Feel like all of this will make it even easier for teams who find talent and continuity to win.

They have more talent than last year, but I don't think the pieces fit that great together. Top 5 preseason team, but I don't see them going 30-5 again.

Another West Coast transfer add. Probably not someone we would look at but I wonder if the West Coast cutoff is 3 am EST.

First question would be why he didn't play all year......unless I missed something in his profile.

And they won the championship? If the goal us being very good and falling short, yes, you can build a team 100% from the portal.

I wouldn’t bring up Duke- they had Cooper Flagg & two other top 10 NBA Draft picks- not to mentioned they had about 6-7 NBA players on the roster including probably 4-5 first rounders.

St. John’s probably doesn’t have one top 10 pick on its current roster & maybe 1 or 2 NBA first rounders.

Do the pieces fit? Sometimes that's more important than the individual talent.

Pitino has always been impatient to win. This reminds me of his Celtics "rebuild" after he was hired as their coach. That didn't work so well. Although Travis Knight thanks him! And he's even more impatient now because he doesn't have a lot of years left. He wants to win NOW.
This is a great point. Talent vs continuity.

The UConn counter is - does Hurley expects leaps that don’t happen?
