I agree with the general premise that nobody should be panicking. But I also think it would be awfully convenient if the 50% leaving happen to be the same 50% we hope leave. There's likely to be a painful departure or 2
We have players that barely saw the court for whatever reason and playing time is a big factor.

I know the latter part is the reality of the sport now, but there’s certain guys I’m gonna have a really hard time with leaving given their roles this year and next year.

Portal gone bad

Interesting to hear him talk like this. I guess it affected him with everyone talking about him just being there for the money and didn’t care about the team. Humanizes the kid to see him like that after all the things I had heard about him.

The real one to watch from GT is Baye Ndongo. One of the better centers in the country. Played at Darrow School in NY and PSA in CT. I don't think he'd be someone we go after with Reed and Reibe but he's a great player.

We will probably recruit a big, but Ndongo will want more PT than we could offer.

Naithan George is the actual player we should keep an eye on from that team. Sophomore who averaged 13/4/7.

I don't think UConn fans are "panicking" much at all about losing 50% of the current roster that is eligible to come back. The 50% that do come back are likely the ones contributing in big ways right now, if the other 50% don't come back they can be replaced....just the way things are now, year to year.

Although Dan Hurley says he wants them all back I doubt that's really the case, some spots need upgrades besides the incoming freshmen. It's a business now more than ever, they're all being paid something. Players have to go where they can play and make the most and UConn needs to put the best team it can on the floor every year....which means a mix of returning players, freshmen & portal to fill needs.

It's taken me a while to accept the business part, as I'm still nostalgic and hopeful of recruiting freshmen and having continuity for 2-3 years. But that's mostly dead now.

I'm now more attuned to the "we need the best player now" mentality, and honestly, if we lose five guys and replace them with five better guys and then replace those five guys with five equal or better guys the year after, then we will be more successful.

I'm going to assume we will try to bring in 3-4 stud freshmen every year, but chances are we'll just be hitting free agency pretty hard most years.

Interesting - definitely a Hurley mentality
Rather have better athletic ability and we are already set up front for he most part. I wouldn't really want to see Huff and Reibe in a the same time. I know he is a PF but still rather have more athletic ability than what we have on the team now and so far for next year.

The biggest name in the portal this year will likely be the UCF center, Moustapha Thaim.

7'2", avg 10 points, 6.3 reb, 2.6 blocks. He's a freshman too.

30% 3 point shooter on 2.3 3PA too. We don't need a center with Reibe coming in and Reed here next year, but this kid (if he hits the portal) will be the most sought after name. Lottery pick potential

Watched him last night versus Kansas, actually missed a key shot down the stretch that would have won them the game. He's not quite as imposing as his size would suggest, needs to put some weight on but did look like a player with some solid upside.

I have doubts that Reibe is a contributor year 1. The S&C is lacking, and he's inconsistent. I think this year taught us you can't rely on non-5* freshman to be contributors day 1.

Who was our 5 star freshman who didn't contribute? Im thinking he may be good enough to at least spell reed 10-12 minutes a game

I think he means Nowell. Reibe is rated a lot higher than Nowell was and has NBA height and skills I wouldn't compare the 2 based on not being 5* recruits. I expect Reibe to backup Reed next year and do a decent job. we will lose some blocks at the rim since Samson isn't around but we will be more skilled there for sure.

Reibe is a 4* player--borderline 5*--just like Nowell was. Normally, players in that range I'm fine relying on to contribute. Not for kids in the 50-100 range we've recruited historically.

But IMO it's different because he's a big. We MUST have a servicable backup big, and I'd be reluctant to put that much pressure on a freshman with a weak body and inconsistent game right now. There's a darn good shot he's a player, but we need guaranteed performance.

I'm very high on bigs from the portal for this reason.

Kind of sketchy that a major contributor on a decent NCAA Tournament team is leaking that he's going to transfer, no?

There's a "non" in there, applying it to IA & AN. Easy to get excited about freshmen blue chips, reality is that those that can come in and contribute with confidence year 1 are usually reserved for top 20-30 kids.

This year, if you go beyond top 35 or so (this was a loaded class), there is a pretty significant drop off in frosh contribution, exceptions being Sorber & Fears. The year prior, which was a really weak class, was closer to 15-20. Feels like on average it's around that top 30 number.

I'd expect Reibe to be playing decent minutes next year - can't teach size and not sure anyone would be happy bringing a third big into the mix, and we also don't know what is going on with Youssef (or Reed for that matter). What worries me with traditional 5's is that they don't fit the NBA profile - so then they have to maximize $$ in college and/or find a program that is going to be willing to let them play a stretch 5 type role.

Why are you worried about Reed? He will be a starting Center next year and will get paid proportionally for being that.

I think we are going to be more involved with an athletic big PG and Swing man then another Center. We only have so much money to go around. Sometimes you just have to rely on some of these highly rated recruits to produce. He won't be asked to start.
