Tourney Results - 1st Round

Louisville getting every call. Prince just fouled out. I think that's 3 in the last minute and a half. That one might've been legit, but #4 was a horrible call.

Please, can we get robo refs already?
I hear you but Prince's last 2 fouls were legit offensive calls. I was with 2 referees who made the same assessment while the games were live. Hard to see her foul out that way, but they were the right calls.

I'll go to my grave disagreeing with you on #4. Floppity flop flop. Might've been a tiny bit of contact, but not a legit foul.

edit--and in my fantasy world, even if there is a foul a flop negates it; stand up on your feet and play basketball

Tenn winning the turnover battle 17-2 vs USF in 3rd quarter, score in line with that, up 20.

Biggest margin in a 1st round game, South Carolina is telling everybody else to top that.

edit--108-48 final, so 60 is the number to beat

Notre Dame won by 52 previously so close but not quite
Tennessee Tech only played 7. I couldn’t believe it. Some of those reserves and walks-ons might never get another chance to play in a tournament game or on national tv.

If I had options, I’d be in the portal before I made it back to the locker room.

A little disappointed that these mid major teams who won a bunch of games this year haven't been very competitive today. Liberty the obvious exception, and Grand Canyon hung around most of the game.
That's the magic reason why Big10 #12 gets in instead of MEAC #2.

Will be interesting to see if a team like Richmond, or Creighton can make sweet 16.

Richmond is higher seeded, but still feel like a bit of an underdog. Glad they will move on. Today has been kinda boring. A few close games, but lots of blowouts, mostly chalk.

Charge should only exist if defender is standing still for five steps before taking a knee to the chest. Keep your feet or weight room.

Yeah, today is not a good day for people who advocate for more mid majors getting in. For a while it seemed like we were moving towards more parity in wcbb, but now I think the pendulum is swinging back the other way.

To me, refs have gotten lax on calling offensive fouls with respect to arm control and it's leading to players being more aggressive when driving when compared to a few years ago. Prince's contact wasn't tiny. To the extent that the player landed on the ground? I'll give you that, but the displacement would have been obvious even if she had remained upright. They have to make that call.

Not many upsets on the men's side either.

Are we talking about the same play? Doesn't sound like it.

I also remember when cracking down on flopping was a big thing, but that quickly went by the wayside.

I’ve seen a few Richmond games this year. Massey had them losing by six or so, I didn’t believe it. They really blew by GaTech except for a few minutes in the second quarter.

We have a new leader in the clubhouse. Duke w/ the 61 point beat down of Lehigh. Only allowed 25 points. Ouch! Take that CJ McCollum.
Lol we've had the same record beaten 3x in a row during this tournament. I'm trying to decipher what that means. First Notre Dame with the 52 point beatdown record which holds until South Carolina wins by 60. Then that record holds a few hours until Duke wins by 61. Is this a sign of the widening gap from the transfer portal, coincidence, or something else...?

Vandy is about to be my first miss on my bracket. I only picked them to win one game. But flaming out in this manner diminishes their season a bit imo. So that’s unfortunate.
Vandy is an interesting case because I can't tell if their season should be deemed a success or a disappointment.

Success
  • Single-digit seed in NCAAs (i.e. not a bubble team)
  • Swept Tennessee
  • National ranking
  • Mikayla Blakes' individual brilliance as a freshman in the SEC
  • Significant improvement by Khamil Pierre
  • Defense looked great at times (swarming, in-your-face brand)
  • Played mainly without a true post (Sacha Washington missed entire season with blood clots)

Disappointment
  • Finished 8-8 in SEC (down from last season's 9-7 finish) and not competitive with Texas, South Carolina, or Kentucky
  • Player roles not clearly defined (pointing mainly to Moore and Kapinus)
  • Depth/rotation issues (note Pierre's exhaustion during the Mississippi State game--a game they should've won and had won until the end)
  • 3-point shooting was atrocious (30%)
  • Leadership (or lack thereof)--for a team that had three graduates and a senior in the rotation, they lacked on-court leadership in the worst way (Jordyn Cambridge was sorely missing--too bad she ran out of eligibility last year)

The things they need to fix can be fixed through a combination of maturation, portal enhancements, and leadership/role defining. That may be easier said than done, though.

Wasn't Prince's fourth foul where she was called for the arm and her fifth the charge?

In 2012, a #15 seeded Lehigh men's team traveled down to NC and stunned #2 Duke. 13 years later a #15 seeded Lehigh women's squad ventured down to NC to take on #2 Duke. If you thought that Lehigh was gonna repeat that feat, you thought wrong.

Like I said in another thread... if I was a mid-major team that was gonna receive an arse whipping of the highest magnitude.... I'd much rather get on a plane for a cross country trip as opposed to driving on the pothole filled interstates of SC on the way to Columbia. (No offense to the great state of Little Carolina)

My Spartans might get beat down worse than any team in the history of the city of Greensboro, but hey.... they are enjoying some sights and sounds of LA.... AND get to play for the first time on national network TV (ABC)

Does anyone feel like we're going to have some bigger upsets today? Yesterday was pretty much all chalk with exception to Oregon beating Vandy.

I think there is potential. Some upsets to keep an eye on:

Murray State over Iowa
SD State over Oklahoma St.
Harvard over Michigan St.

Any others?

You have Oklahoma State mixed up with Oklahoma here. Oklahoma State is playing UNC today.

Oregon State is playing UNC today and Oklahoma is playing Florida Gulf Coast. I just verified that Oklahoma State is in fact playing South Dakota State.

Lots of state schools with similar looking names, so I can see where the confusion came from. :D
