That is always our key. I will be interested to see how much Geno uses the full court press.Easy.. I want to see Defense. Thas all... DEFENSE from the jump. Uconn's defense can completely neutralize opponents for most of the game. By then, the damage is done, and Uconn is up by 30. Their defense takes so much pressure off their offensive game, which translates to open Fudds by the 3line, or a sick pass to a slasher going to the basket.
In conclusion, DEFENSE.
I would not expect substantial time for Kelis just yet. She was very poised out there but Kayleigh, we have to remember, has high level experience both in college and outside it and is a very well rounded player and good defender. She is more of a true PG than even KK and should see many minutes for us. Kelis' blazing speed is a true asset for the team and it will be interesting to see if she plays with the main rotation against Louisville.I'm interested in the rotation:
1) Will Heckel share PG minutes and will Kelis continue to see substantial time?
2) Will Blanca and Ash split time? It seems Allie is Azzi's backup at SG.
3) Will Jana's minutes continue being quite limited despite her rebounding prowess?
I totally disagree with this fixation on a core team with substitutions. He is going to play combinations, trick defenses, spread offenses, and crazy presses. It's like a general in a battle having an extra division. They don't get coffee and cake and sit it out. It's the first game of the season, so there's no need to rush a decision about the 8, 9 and 10 positions. That will work itself out with a little more time and a few more games. It's November and we've a long way to go.
1). A decisive win with everyone getting minutes, contributing and having fun.
2). Everyone staying healthy
Another aspect of trying multiple combinations and approaches is covering being able to anticipate future "what ifs" (like contingencies for injuries, individual slumps and different approaches, at times, for different teams).I totally disagree with this fixation on a core team with substitutions. Totally. Against a smaller team, you pound it underneath to Serah, Sarah ,Jana and Ice or a combination thereof. Like Geno says, a "throw me the ball I'm in position" offense. Against a slower team, you use KK, Kayleigh, Blanca, Ash ,Azzi, and Sarah as part of a speed team and maybe Kelis too. He is signaling that he is looking for combinations due to our flexibility and jokingly that he has to learn how to substitute again. It's potentially a great team. I thought last year's was for sure not in December or even February before the SC game. That is why I can't wait to see the finished product.Another aspect of trying multiple combinations and approaches is covering being able to anticipate future "what ifs" (like contingencies for injuries, individual slumps and different approaches, at times, for different teams).
It's also a perk of having some many talented and (knock wood) healthy players.
Please re-read what I posted. I'm pretty sure you have misread it or at least the meaning behind it? I have been following Geno's coaching for 30 years and believe he will eventually settle in with a "core". I can't recall a year when he didn't, but this team has many talented players that goes much deeper than 10. So, I agree with you that he will most likely use different combinations of players (inside and outside his "core") depending upon the various needs throughout a game. This will definitely be a good way of keeping more players happy.I totally disagree with this fixation on a core team with substitutions. I think you misunderstood me as well. I "liked" your original post and I was actually supporting it but I see a different dimension to this team in "combinations" that Geno never had the luxury to use before. Because he is so adaptable, proven by what he does each year with different players, I think he will adapt to the team he has and coach the team he has. So no, I don't see a per se "core" which includes 3-4 players substituting in and out and 6-7 players only getting in at the end of the game with the offense and defense staying the same. I see a pressing combination, a trapping combination, a big pound it inside combination, a speed combination, a shoot the lights out combination, and others with defenses and offenses to match. These combinations are not necessarily 5 players either. He has actually said as much in an oblique way in a most recent interview. In short, we have never seen a team like this, so why assume he will not think outside the box? Last year he did with "small ball" and we won a NC in record fashion. Please re-read what I posted. Okay, I think we should leave it here for at least 10-12 games and perhaps then come back to it to see who is closer to what is happening at that time. I actually don't think we are too far apart.I think you misunderstood me as well. A triple-double-double. I like that. And it'd be even better if it was points-rebounds, points-blocks, and points-steals.1 Sarah with a double-double
2 Serah with a double-double
3 Ash with a double-double
Yes, I want a triple double
But mainly I want to see a great big smile on Caroline’s face when she nails a 3-pointer!
