After the come from behind victory over Creighton, and the timely return of Caroline, here are my top 3 things for Saturday against Villanova:

1) A win;

2) Everyone to stay out of foul trouble, especially Aubrey, Aaliyah and Dorka;

3) A smooth rotation, with everyone resting at times and Ayanna getting some minutes to help.

Nova is now #14 and Siegrist has been on a tear of late so it is likely to be a tough game. What else is new?

  • emphasize weak side cuts down the lane when the ball goes into the post. Make the defender pay for doubling and tripling the post.
  • Come TIGHT off screens at the top of the offense and curl to the basket versus running toward half-court and then coming back towards the basket.
  • Pick up the tempo as we get more players back. Aubrey and Nika are better offensively in a fast transition offense. More movement is needed even in the half-court!

-Quicker reaction to double teams by Edwards
-Aubrey shutting down Siegrist
-20 solid minutes by Caroline
Could not said it any better (in addition, Aubrey goes off for 15+ points)

.-.
1. Win the rebound battle
2. Move the ball and keep the turnovers down.
3. Take and make the open shots you are given. Do not force plays.

1. Stay in the game mentally (no lazy or telegraphed passes leading to turnovers, finding a body to box out, don't leave hot shooters to double someone who probably won't hurt us, find outside shooters when double/triple teamed in lane)
2 Regain shooting touch, 50%+ overall and 35%+ on threes.
3. Keep up defensive effort, so even if shooting is off they have a chance to win.

.-.
Be aggressive on offense
Move without the ball
Be aggressive but smart on defense
Going to be a tough game
Big hostile crowd, Nova thinks we’re ripe for picking so they want the conference championship.
UCONN is bad for WCBB, so it’s The World
Against the Huskies once again
Make it work for us.
Nika put on The Scowl from the opening tip off. No Fear

Good switching on defense. Maddy will score but the Huskies have to keep her below her average and make sure no other player has the "game of their lives" against them.

Caroline able to play good minutes with Lou to spread the floor to expand our scoring opportunities

Nika and Aubrey hitting open shots.

--Don't telegraph passes
--Set up some screens so the best shooter(Lou) can get off some shots
--Protect the area under the basket from easy layups

1) To actually see the game while it’s happening - an iffy proposition given our very poor internet service. Who has the tv rights to this one?

2) A barrage of made 3’s in the first quarter so that Villanova can’t afford to clog the paint and thereby give AE, DJ and LLS some space to work inside.

3) Better ball security - seems like a lot of fumble fingers, clunker inside shots and lazy passes of late. Hopefully this gets better with the addition of CD and more rest time for her weary teammates.

FOX

1. Everyone WELL RESTED, HEALTHY, and Stays HEALTHY!
2. Nika 10+ assists. That means the offense is working, players are moving and getting open, and they are making the right cuts,. Defense is generating fast breaks and turnovers where Nika can deliver her patented dimes!
3. Keep Maddy at 25 points or lower.

Villanova has Two players who get the vast majority of their points... Segrist and Olson. Keep them under control and we win.
3 things;
1. Keep Segrist and Olson under control.... 20 -25 for Maddy, 10-15 for Lucy
2. Limit turnovers to 12 or less
3. No injuries

Rebound
Rebound
Rebound

  • Aaliyah breaks out of her slump with 20+pts/10+rebounds
  • Maddy and Lucy held under a combined 35pts
-An injury-free win

1. 7+ total made 3-pointers for UConn
2. less than 10 turnovers for UConn
3. no players playing more than 35 minutes (i.e. more dispersed subbing)

Villanova does not sub much and wonder why they have not gotten the “tired” bug.
maybe the problem is not being tired
but
teams have learned how to defend us without Azzi —
It took them awhile

1) 'Nika 10+ assists. That means the offense is working, players are moving and getting open, and they are making the right cuts,. Defense is generating fast breaks and turnovers where Nika can deliver her patented dimes!' re: Jackalope
2) 'Keep Segrist and Olson under control.... 20 -25 for Maddy, 10-15 for Lucy' re: PAHuskeyFan
3) No injuries, all smiles and clarity as to Uconn being the best team in the BE (goal #1of 3 ) at the end!

Movement. If you want to see the impact on a defense...see how many times Creighton got easy layups because the defense made the wrong decision. And these weren't even hard cuts.

A win
A win
No Injuries

The rest of the season is going to be a GRIND no more double digit wins for us.

1) a win
2) a fast start in the 1st & 3rd quarters
3) Azzi able to play at full speed for at least 10 mins, and have no adverse effects due to playing.... (No, I do not know if she is cleared to play, it's just what I would like to see):)
