Most of you are probably wondering how I calculated all these results. Here’s how I did it.
- A championship is worth 10 points.
- A Runner- Up is worth 6 points.
- A final four is worth 5 points.
- An Elite 8 is worth 4 points.
- A sweet 16 is worth 3 points.
- A R32 is worth 2 points.
- An Appearance is worth 1 point.

Here’s a little help/ pointer: A National Championship run will accumulate 31 points. Since they won the title (10 pt), made a final four (5pt), elite 8 (4pt), sweet 16 (3pt), R32(2pt), and appeared (1pt), and won 6 games (6pt), this adds up to 31 points. Make sense?

I added up each team’s Tournament Wins, Appearances, R32s, S16s, and onward from there since 1985. The teams with the most success will obviously be higher on the list.

Why 1985? That’s when the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams.

Any other questions?

13. Villanova 193 Points
14. Oklahoma 169 Points
15. Indiana 166 Points
16. Wisconsin 155 Points
17. Ohio State 153 Points
18. Gonzaga 149 Points
19. Georgetown 148 Points
20. Maryland 144 Points
21. Arkansas 142 Points
22. Purdue 141 Points
23. Texas 131 Points
24. Illinois 128 Points
25. Memphis 126 Points
26. Xavier 124 Points
27. Cincinnati 115 Points
28. Virginia 112 Points
29. Oklahoma State 106 Points
30. Butler/ Georgia Tech 104 Points

Just outside:
31. Utah 96 Points
32. West Virginia 94 Points
33. LSU 87 Points
34. Stanford 87 Points
35. Oregon 86 Points

If R32 is worth 2 points (which most teams get by beating a very low ranked team, it doesn't seem right than an E8 or a F4 is only worth about double that.

It's exponentially more difficult to get to the F4 than to get to the round of 32.

I would do the points like this: 1-2-4-8-10-15-25

Winning should count for more.

Since 1985, there have been 2240 teams that earned that 1 appearance point.
In that time, we've had 35 champions. That's a ratio of 64 to 1 obviously.

So, 25 points to 1 point is appropriate.

We should be 5 and by a wide margin to whoever at 6. If you’re feeling greedy, put UK at 3 and UCONN at 4. Nova and cuse should be swapped

So why not 1-2-4-8-16-32-64?

Can someone figure out Duke vs. UConn from 1999 to 2019? My wife still says the gap is staggering, but I think it's pretty close?

Here. Let me help with some math... No need for participation trophies! They have dameaged the world enough already...

North Carolina4
UConn4
Kentucky3
Villanova3
Florida2
Kansas2
Michigan State2
Louisville2* (2013 vacated, so it's really 1 :))
Arizona1
Arkansas1

I can agree the points probably don't value a championship enough. But appearances and final fours at zero is silly. As a fan of a team that wins NCs and maddeningly fails to get in the tournament all too often, and the team that gets in the most consistently (Kansas) there is something to be said for consistently being very good and being good enough to win.

@upstater what results with your numbers? Not that I agree with those, but I'm curious.

The goal of any tournament is winning. The simplest indicator would be championships. to recognize consistent play and still apply appropriate credit for championships, I have 1 suggestion for your point system, keep all the levels the same except change championship to at least 20 or 30

Someone else would have to do that math.

Nice exercise if anyone can find the time.

UConn has a lot of Final 8s and NCs compared to almost everyone else.

Based on the given scoring system, Duke is ahead 80-64 since (including) 1999.

If you used a weighted system that rewards getting further into the tournament (1-2-4-8-16-32-64 points) Duke is ahead* 301-300.

Back of the napkin math, I could be off.

*Duke has not missed the tournament since 99, we've missed it 8 times including APR ban in 2013 where we probably were a bubble team.

It annoys me more than it should that 1) Louisville is right ahead of us, and 2) Syracuse is on there, period.

Consistency is nice but I’d rather 1 title, 4 missed tourneys in 5 years than 5 final fours, 0 titles in 5 years. Many may disagree with that but, to me, you need the hardware.

Every UConn fan would agree with this. Fans of perennial chokers and losers like KU and Cuse will say E8 and FF are what matters the most.

In my mind, every season that doesn’t end in a national championship is a failure. I don’t brag about 2009 Final Four run, I brag about our 4 trophies that we’ve won in the last 20 seasons

Not me. Hell no. A missed tournament is painful, like torture. A NC is fleeting. I want to be in the game every year.

This comes from the point of view of a fan whose team won 4 in 20 years.

Almost every other school is dying of championship thirst, and would trade an arm for 1 win, never mind a tourney appearance.

I am fortunately a fan of that team and a team that almost never fails to get in (at least for the last 30 years in a row). And I can say miss 4 win 5 is not better than 4 final fours and a sweet 16. But yes, I am somewhat uniquely blessed.

But after those first two NCs, I’d gladly trade one for several decent runs. Nothing is worse than missing out on the best event in sports.

This deserves a mic drop and thread closure.
