Top 10 List for Lieberman Award. Guess Who.

It not a joke actually well thought out down selection. They are not sudenly going to add people to the list.
Here are the names from the preseason list. This is also WBCA controlled meaning that it's up to the coach to nominate a player for these awards if they feel strongly enough.

2021 Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award Candidates*

No, it’s a joke. Dyaisha Fair has dreadful shooting numbers and is a total volume scorer. MAC counterpart Micaela Kelly is more efficient and just as productive (on a better team, too!) but yet only one of those players is on this list, and it’s not who it should be.

Raina Perez of NC State is also a hilarious candidate to me. Ali Patberg also is a top 15-20 (not top ten) PG. I’ve already aired my grievance about Destanni Henderson’s exclusion, but it’s baffling to see other players listed here with worse statistics across the board.

Please read my last post and then go take it up with Jeff. Jeff or someone close to him chose to put Dana Evans on the SG list and Hailey on the PG list-COACHES NOMINATE and VOTE.
@CocoHusky thanks for giving us the facts on the players on this list. But sometimes facts don't matter but opinions and feelings do. :):rolleyes:

Screw the Lieberman.... Paige is the only Frosh on the late season Wooden Award list! (20 names, including, to my amazement, ONO)

No no... let's not be so hasty this would be counter productive. Paige is not going to win the Wooden or the Naismith this season, Ryne Howard is playing to well for that. Paige is also not eligible to win the Wade because freshman are not eligible. The national awards may be out of her reach but please don't underestimate what winning this award would do for Paige in terms of UCONN lore. Sue Bird won 3 of these awards, Moriah Jefferson won 2. Sabrina Ionescu won three- that's kind of irrelevant don't even know why I brought her up. Winning a Lieberman as a freshman will certainly get Paige WBCA AA as a freshman. That would mean Paige has cemented her place on Huskies WoH with 4 full years of eligibility remaining. It would also signal her ascent up the UCONN Mt. Rushmore. BTW UCONN WBB Mt. Rushmore is missing a PG -just sayin.

No funny is leaving her off this list! But don’t worry...

Once again, there seems to less disagreement about whether or not a player is on a list than what list the player is on. Positions seem blatantly wrong for some players.

I'm pretty sure we don't have to worry about Paige getting her place on the wall of honor... :)

Award is for Best Guard (does not separate point / shooting guard

Bumping this thread because I believe with that Butler performance, UCONN assists single game record and UCONN Freshman Assists record Paige sealed the 2021 Lieberman award yesterday.

I am with you Coco but perhaps some statistics to prove your point would be nice touch? ;)

Henderson and SC is only after one goal! Besides the Dawn Staley Award is the only one that matters to her!
Did you check with her? So presumably, she’s not interested in the conference championships (regular season and SEC tournament), any awards (except the aforementioned Staley award). “You lost me, Pete.”

Yup., Paige Bueckers selected as one of 10 candidates for the 2021 Nancy Lieberman Award Geez. I think she is the favorite.

Would they ever give the award to a freshman? I'm guessing no way....?

Jordan Nixon called. Jordan was wondering if Dawn would consider adding her name to the list for the 2021 Dawn Staley award.

Maybe @CocoHusky knows this answer but wouldn’t the committee listing these names modify the list based on improved play or reduced play the way the Wooden award does?

To me, omitting Clark is egregious and they could remove Taylor, Mangahtia and Van Lith in the least due to their drop off in play...

And YES, Didi Richards is Baylor’s point guard and is doing an admirable job, just not better than Paige or Clark....

Guessing Clark who was not on the top 10 list found her way to the top 5.

Five finalists:
Paige (Uconn), Aari McDonald (Arizona), Did Richards (Baylor), Caitlin Clark (Iowa) and Tiana Mangakahia (Syracuse).

Fan voting starts this Friday fror this and the other 4 position awards - so get ready!

Ah, but don’t tell that to the 2003 or 2004 voters who gave the Lieberman Award to UConn Mt. Rushmore fixture and legendary PG(?) Diana Taurasi!!! ;)

Seems like lots of politics involved with this list of finalist. Iowa fans complaining that Clark gets no love, so she is added despite the fact she averages over 5 TO a game. Sorry PG need to be solid decision makers and she just is there yet. Great Shooter, not Great PG yet. McDonald who is playing the exact same position as last some how wins the Drysdale last year, but now magically is a PG since there is no chance she will win Drysdale again (Evans is a lock there). Mangakahia is a solid PG, but she has been way to inconsistent this year. She has forced so much this year and averages 4.7 TO a game. Didi and Paige are the only two legit candidates in this list based on overall performance. I think Owasu and Burton both of the Big ten are far better candidates than the other 3.

More of a shooting guard I think.
Actually Caitlin like Paige is a PG but she does not require any encouragement to score while still averaging 7.1 assists per game, 2nd in the nation. Paige is 8th in Nat. at 6.5 assists per game. Although Paige is more efficient with an A/T ratio of 2.65 (20 in Nat.) versus Caitlin's 1.4 (185 in Nat.).

An afterthought: is Paige actually UCONN's PG or does Nika now play the PG position. If anyone says "Well Nika brings the ball up but Paige is the PG," then perhaps Iowa has a similar situation with Caitlin. Didn't Geno say Nika at the PG frees Paige to better get into the flow of offense as the shooting/off guard? And the answer is: today's game is positionless which explains why these lists are confusing for some of us. It does allow the selectors to put players on any list they please. Or they just are being nice by placing Caitlin on the shooting guard list because she would get buried by Paige at the PG and she deserves an opportunity to win one of these awards?

The folks that make up the list and get to nominate players are WBCA coaches they pay attention.
Yeah, I'm sure they dedicate a significant amount of time to be diligent selectors. Geeze think of all the time they must spend watching film on all these players.

There has been a lot of misinformation within the last couple of post regarding how the WBCA positions work.
Here are the facts: WBCA sponsors (5) position awards 1) Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award 2) Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award 3) Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award 4) Katrina McClain Power Forward Award and 5) Lisa Leslie Center Award.
At the beginning of the season a watch list of 20 players is created by nominations from the coaches. A player CANNOT appear on more than 1 watch list at a time. Through the season the list is narrowed down first 10 then to 5 ? before a winner for each award is selected. Very unlikely that a player plays their way on to the list but it does happen. The key to nominations are the coaches advocating for their players-not fan, not the press, not some AD-Just Coaches. An example of good advocacy is Kim Mulkey this season. When Kim realized that Didi Richards was going to be her starting PG she petitioned for Didi to be added to the Liberman watch list and Kim was successful. Now You know and I know that Didi is not a PG but that not the point. The point is to win one of these awards you need your coach to first nominate you and then advocate by getting some other coaches to vote for you. Yes you read that correctly-Not only do coaches nominate the COACHES ALSO VOTE on these awards.

Absolutely. See my prior post directly above with a full explanation in bold.

"At the beginning of the season a watch list of 20 players is created by nominations from the coaches." Cite your source(s), please. Cut from Naismith Starting 5 link
"Each award namesake will head her own selection committee. Each selection committee will be composed of fellow Hall of Famers, WBCA member coaches, and media members." Why do do you say only coaches? What other source do you have? These non-coaches cannot nominate players? Where is this limitation cited? Thanks!
