Time to play for next year?

Also "You can start because you're a freshman and they're a senior" sends a bad message. The message should be " You can start because you preformed better than him in practice and earned the start". Nothing should be given.
That message was clearly sent when Vickers couldn’t even make the depth chart and was called out by RE

I also think the idea to sit BS to see what Pindell has is the stupidest thing I’ve heard. If there is one player who deserves to play because of showing effort and grit, it’s BS. The dude has been rocked for ho many years yet he’s still there giving his 110% every game. There’s no possible way you can justify benching him. Hopefully he doesn’t miss time because of this concussion.

Edsall will play this out. Very important to send the message that he expects his teams to compete under every circumstance.

That being said, I will be shocked if we are in a 3-3-5 and Crocker is around next season. I understand the challenges with personnel, etc., but there is simply no reason for this defense to have fallen off to this degree. There are 7 seniors on that defense who played respectable albeit not spectacular defense over the course of their careers. Now we have about the worst defense in FCS. Edsall made the wrong call and I fully expect he will fix it.

Mensah will be a workhorse for us. Finally have another complete back. First since Todman left.

Sherriffs was hit late on the third down throw to Davis in second quarter. USF kid hit BS well after the ball was Thrown. Put his helmet right into BS chin. Even drew blood.

Ref right there. Let it go with no flag. Edsall was pissed. Called a TO. Yelled at the refs.

Here's the thing that I would say about your assumption of dropping the 3-3-5, which may or may not happen in the off-season: If the issue was that we didn't have enough down-linemen to play anything else, what are we going to do next year when Carrezola, Fatukasi, and Ormsby are all gone??

I'm actually afraid that next year, we'll be forced to play a 1-3-7...

EDIT: I also forgot to add that Stapleton and Lawley will both be gone too. We're gonna struggle to have a 3-man front for sure...

You play the games to win. Full stop.

Four wins is SO much better than three. And this is not a joke. Four is a whole helluva lot better than three.

Five wins would be incredible.

Six wins ... well we all know what six wins would be.

Not the time to give up, if only for the effect that more wins would have on recruiting. But if it is a blowout either way, sure, I agree, give the guys who haven't had much PT a little work and get comfortable with the speed.

I wasn't at the game yesterday. I had a command performance to attend to at Kaoud's oriental rugs (hey, she was gracious enough to come to a couple games with me, so I returned the favor). But I was glued to the radio when possible. From my rather detached perspective, beating the spread against a pretty good team no matter what the statistics were was an indication of some progress. (Of course listening to the radio I also kept wondering how hard it must be to teach tackling technique.)

Yesterday was not a disaster -- unless the concussed guys are more serious than we know.

I think the opposite is true, I would argue we don't have the personnel fit the three man front but could pull off a 4 man line. It's more than just counting numbers, a three man front needs a nose tackle and two stout DE's, we don't have that type of personnel.

Foley and Luke C have arguably had disappointing years and it's not their fault. It's 3 against 5 most of the time. They would have been great in a 4 man front. Foley is not a nose tackle and Luke was recruited as a outside rusher.

Who's our nose tackle next year? We don't have any. Drop this stupid scheme ASAP.

Yeah you had to see it to understand I guess.

I'm not saying the 3-3-5 is the best scheme for us. What I'm saying is the following; if you feel that four down linemen are what we should go to next year, then provide me with the names of the two DTs with two other DTs backing them up in rotation. Then, provide the two DEs with two other DEs backing them up (we'll need that in either formation, I guess). Then provide one additional name for each if one goes down to injury, suspension, or whatever.

Once you're done with that exercise, I think you'll see what many of us are already seeing and you're going to crap yourself. There's a reason we went after that DT transfer from Miami in the off-season (Jenkins). We need DTs right now like the deserts need the rain...

Anyone else besides me curious about Bisack?

Yes I know no one expects him to be good enough, but everyone had already given up on Cochran when he went in and went nuts. Bisack has a better arm, is taller and has more athleticism than Cochran.

I would totally expect Bisack to fail, but maybe...

My entire life, I have enjoyed the mob-view that the best QB on a team was the guy holding the clipboard. Thanks for taking that view down another level.

Bisack may be better than Pindell though.

This is what I have for the defensive line right now going into 2018 and their grade and weight, assuming no weight gain (correct me if I'm wrong on any names here or if I'm missing anyone). Names in blue denote incoming commits:

Atkins (Sr, 275)
Brouse (Jr, 265)
Freeborn (Jr, 255)
Murphy (Jr, 289)
Okounam (Jr, 290)
Steer (Sr, 260)
Thomas (So, 289)
Pace (Fr, 265)

That's it, folks. That is your defensive line from what I can tell. Can they move over some OL players to become DL players? Perhaps. Perhaps convert some LBs to DEs. But if you want to tell me that we're going to be able to have 8 line players on a 2-deep and pray that nobody gets injured, etc., well then you had better do an extremely good job of selling me on the idea because I'm not buying it right now.

The BIGGEST area we need to address in the off-season is DT for me. Whether that's a JUCO route, or a ready-to-play recruit, or whatever. But if it was tough to play a 4-man front this year, it will be almost impossible next year...

In 2013 Cochran was the guy holding the clipboard and it turned out he was the best QB.

So we are going to play a three man front with no D lineman over 300 pounds. Impossible.

With the way the staff is still chasing OL for 2018, I think incoming freshman Travis Jones (6-4 350) may be destined to DL.

Like Gioff already said, your NTs are going to be Murphy, Thomas, and maybe Okounam. All three players are in the 290 range. That's a reasonable range for an NT.

Again, explain to me how you're going to go to a four man front? If you're not willing to do so, then stop arguing about it...

I was thinking the same thing, Medic. Also, I hope we can land Damion Daley (3-star DT from South Carolina; offers from Navy, Air Force, Army, Cincy, ECU, and a bunch of MACs). It would be an important pick up for us, and we can offer him a pretty good chance at a lot of playing time for the next four years if he comes here...

He was visiting yesterday...

I didn't know that. Great catch, Medic!

Like I've said before; with my instincts and your command of the web, we can rule the world... ;) (mostly your web command, but I want to feel like I'm a part of this)

What exactly? What I have seen in all the previous games?

There there were almost zero positives yesterday regardless of covering the spread.

I would try to convert a couple players to DE. Levenberry and TJ Gardner would be good candidates and there is a certain TE on the roster who I think could do it.

and regardless of scheme I think we both agree we need to recruit more defensive lineman, hopefully at least one JUCO who could play right away and Travis Jones would have a better chance of starting as a freshman in a 4 man front than a 3 man front.

First, we've actually seen Casey tear it up at D1. Second, Casey is arguably the greatest Connecticut HS QB of all time. If it weren't for the concussions I'm 100% sure Casey would be on an NFL roster. He understood the game & position so well

Umm...what? Casey was never going to the NFL. But there was a guy named Steve Young who played HS football in CT. Honestly Scott Burrell could have been a great QB, and was recruited by Notre Dame. The greatest HS QB in CT history doesn’t end up on the bench at UConn.

But again, you've tried to solve your DE problem in a four man front when we both agree that the DT is the issue.

So give me your four man DT rotation with at least one more guy as a backup if someone goes down. That's what I'm looking for before I can take your vehement criticism of the formation seriously...

Um Levenberry isn’t on the team next year.

Casey was better in high school than Steve Young was.
