Do you really think an extra 2" of height (and I'm not convinced it's really that much) is better than Ice's stronger, wider body and greater experience? Ice is better at boxing out, currently more aggressive to rebounds, and has a better understanding of the offense. UConn beat a bunch of teams with 6-6 girls in this past NCAA tournament; an extra couple of inches were not the difference between a win and a loss.

I swear this obsession with size is such a guy thing. No offense

It would seem that whichever "Big" is playing at the same time as Sarah Strong is developing their skills and anticipation at a faster rate. Paige, Chen, Ash, and KK are doing a great job of distributing the ball, but Sarah's experience with 3x3 this summer's U18 world championship has enhanced her "half-court" vision on offense.

Regardless, Geno & CD know how to win, and UConn is undefeated, and the two "SC's" both have a loss already. It matters which teams improve the fastest and by the greatest amount TOGETHER as a team before March tournament time. Being undefeated for the entire year helps build impressive winning streaks, but Genos & CD have 6 of those (undefeated seasons), but more importantly, they are the only ones with 4 NCs in a row.

Judging by the 11 NCs of UConn's active coaches vs. the 8 NCs of all of the other active coaches, I would have to defer to the UConn coaching staff on this one (developing their players fastest AND by the greatest amount).

It may be a large basketball IQ that matters most, and how it is transferred to the players from the coaches... [Might be a new T-Shirt for Boneyarders: "UConn: Basketball IQ matters!"]:cool::cool:

Go Huskies!!!

I disagree with the obsession being a guy thg bcus women obsess abt being a 6 or 12 In a pants suit or dress size. no offense....but I digress...I totally agree height doesn't really make you a great rebounder it's abt position and desire, a great example is Aneesah Morrow, who as a listed 6'1-6'2 player has never averaged less thn 10 rebounds per game with her highest average being 14 rbs per game and Dennis Rodman who at 6'7 led the NBA 7 straight years with desire and positioning.

Give the girl a break! JANA has come off an Achilles Tendon tear which takes a long time to heal. JANA was ready to play after watching her FIFA games that she dominated.Besides practice, JANA has been in 4 qames. WOW, the experience! She has the ability to be a great player and I say, knock off the comments and give her a chance. JANA will definitely become the player GENO and I believe she will be. GO JANA!!! GO FRESHMEN!!!! GO SOPHOMORES!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!
Huh? #1 it’s FIBA not FIFA, as FIFA is the soccer association. #2. Many, many posters here have touted how great and ready Jana was and is for high level D1 basketball, which frankly is not the case. She needs to improve to be relied upon. And #3. The poster noted that and I too think ultimately she will be a very good player for us but she’s far from that right now.
Everyone is entitled to their views even if some of their comments are completely void of logic or rationale. Being a cheerleader is fine but understand that others do pay attention to ALL the teams with elite players. UConn is in the mix but it is not a foregone conclusion by any means.
How about just saying “Go Huskies” instead of trying to list class years? Not sure I get that point.
I am glad you’re enthusiastic but allow others to offer their take and perspective as maybe you will learn something.

If you were referring to ICE the difference would be four inches, not two: 6'7" Betts, 6'3" ICE. In
reading your note it "seemed" that you were referencing Ms. Brady... If you meant JANA.. I
was misreading. GO ICE, GO JANA. Start the process with a good game against the 6'7" and
6'5" Beavers!
I would think that Geno would want to see how Jana fares against the big Oregon State front court......I suspect she's quicker than either of the two Oregon State posts and should hopefully show off some of the great offensive moves that she has...

Thank you for your response. Not as an excuse, but I am 91 years old and prone to lapses. Thank you for telling me it's FIBA. Anything I post is not as knowledgeable or critical as the more informed posters. I post what I feel with the knowledge that I have. and yes. I'm a cheer leader. I do not say not to be critical when called for, but after 4 games, she has not settled in yet. All comments O K after say 15 games. I qnly meant cut JANA some slack. And yes she is one of my favorites. Your post is welcomed. GO HUSKIES!!!!

I really don’t know where this comes from. Maybe I missed all the touting about how she’s ready now. I only saw posts speculating about her potential. She has potential. There’s lots of room to discuss whether and how much can be realized, and how quickly. I said I thought next season, or maybe even late in this season. There’s nothing to refute in this.

If your guess is that she’ll never develop at all, fine. Then make that clear and be done with it. On the other hand, if you are not afraid to admit that she may well develop, then join the club.

Having watched UCLA dominate SC, without having to rely very heavily on Betts, I believe Geno needs to force feed minutes for Jana as it doesn't seem, to me, that Ice can't be expected to give up 4 inches to a player like Betts as skilled as she is on both ends of the court.

Jana not only has more height. It seems to me, that with enough game action, the rust of 18 months will dissipate and her natural aggressiveness will result in both more points, rebounds and blocks.

With games with UCLA and USC forthcoming, I think the time has come for Jana's minutes to increase substantially.
Get the queen of the Nile out there with these instructions: "Rebound, rebound, rebound! And block shots! Hands straight up, no dumb fouls. Your four courtmates will do the scoring."

Go to the “Search” bar and type Jana and then in the member box put YOUR NAME. You have been one of the worst offenders on over hyping Jana since the summer. It started with your comparison to Stewie and it has continued unabated since over 30 different posts by you since October 27 touting her! Go and count. You have to refrain from this constant need to post especially when you have zero basis for many of your assertions. She’s a freshman who has never played against comparably skilled players. She has potential not accomplished like Sarah. Yes, we all
Want to see her realize it sooner than later but many posters like You have been over exuberant and then overly sensitive when critique is given. So yes much of this retort was due solely to your unfettered lofty prognostication.
Others have been doing the same so
When a bit of tempered retort is given, they then illogical defend their poorly construed stance like Next 12 has done. Rule #1 as a parent, treat all your kids the same in public. Root for all the Huskies not just specific classes.

This is tedious. You’ve been harboring a grudge over this for months now. Why? I said her skill set was similar to Stewie’s, but I never said she was as good as Stewie now — which seems to be how you took that — or even suggested that she’d ever be as good. That remark was in response to questions from others about what sort of skills she has. I said that in high school and in the summer games she showed good handles, a decent outside shot and was strong in the low post. Those skills are similar to Stewie’s. That’s a simple fact. Take it out of context, if you like, twist it every which way, but what I said is true.

But I’m glad to see you’ve committed yourself to tempered retorts from now on. And it looks like you’re approaching a willingness that Jana has some potential and that others are permitted to reflect upon it. This is progress.

Finally, yes I am optimistic. I hope you are too. That’s what fans do.

If you truly believe that size, in this case height, doesn't make a significant difference in the likelihood of securing a contested rebound and is only a belief based solely on my gender, then we truly have nothing to talk about.

Incidentally, speaking of size, take a look at the differences in hand size between Jana and Ice in the photo in your response. Or is the apparent difference also my masculine imagination?

Audi Crooks appears to be holding her own despite being “only” 6’3” with minimal leaping ability.

I'm not sure where the "knock off the comments" is coming from, but Geno started it. First, from back when she was injured:

"There's nobody that is enjoying life more than she is, that is totally engaged in what we're doing," Auriemma said. "Everything we do as a team, she feels as though it's happening to her."

And from an October 30 article with quotes from Geno:

"I can't say enough about her as a person. Nobody has seen her play. No one at UConn nation has seen her play, and they don't anything about her. All they know is what they see. Myself, the staff, the players, and everyone associated with our program has been really truly, truly blessed that she's come into our life because I can honestly say in 40 years I've never coached anybody better at Connecticut, never, in my life."

So honestly, it was Geno who started all the hype we've been discussing on the board. By making those comments, he set expectations sky high for her, and thus far, she's not lived up to it. Of course fans need to be patient, etc. But Geno was the one blowing the doors off expectations for her, and that has bled into the fans' psyche's.

The " knock off the comments" came from from me and was directed to commenters that said JANA should be forced fed with the basketball as she was not performing well. My comment was about she has played 4 games and after her achillies tendon tear that requires a long recovery she should be given the chance to prove herself. EXAMPLE, tonight JANA scored 12 points against Oregon State I contended that JANA should be given the opportunity to play 15=16 games , then make comments. And yes, I'm a big fan of JANA, ever since I heard she was coming to UCONN. GO JANA!!! GO FRESHMEN!!! GO SOPHOMORES!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!

That “knock off the comments” post was a reply to one of my posts. I didn’t take any offense, to anything said, you are okay with me. In fact, I love your enthusiasm for this team!

For the record, I too am a big fan of Jana, just as you are. Of course I am a big fan of everyone on the team, I admit it!

We will see how Audi "holds her own" against Sarah, Ice, & Jana on Tues, 12/17/24 at Mohegan Sun Arena...:D:cool:

AP might be up for showing her leaping ability by then, and lands properly without injury. My hope is AP dunks over Audi WHILE the lead is still single digits [UConn ahead of course....]:):):)

"Lighten up, Francis!" ala SGT Hulka [Stripes]:

HuskyNan gets to throw comic relief in at her whimsy without using the smiley faces... Don't take it personally.

I am a big fan of Jana, but a bigger fan of Gabby Williams [she almost pulled off the upset of Team USA at the 2024 Olympics Gold medal game]. She gave up High Jump (made Olympics as a seventeen yr-old for USA in HJ) for Basketball and never looked back. Gabby's "bigness" is found in her heart, athleticism, and desire to achieve on the biggest stage without taking a play off.
