BJ Hayes looked like a stiff to me, he looks like a spring recruit whose stock went way up just because he is tall and available late.

i dont disagree. the theme here is we are still losing on guys who at one pt we would never lose. anyway, if hayes is a stiff, what are your thoughts on tolksdorf?

I have no idea about Tolsdorf but I haven't been expecting any kind of savior to come in, it's very late in the game and we are facing a tournament ban, BJ Hayes probably would have gotten a lot of people excited around here only to be have them disappointed later. We had a great year recruiting last year with Drummond, Boatright and Daniels and I expect us to have a great year recruiting next year.

so bj hayes commits to gtown. obekpa is supposedly on the verge of signing with cincy. and we snag a virtually unknown from germany who may or may not be a shooter.....sorry guys, hard for me to get that excited.

I thought we got a big man last week.

From a prospect perspective (say that 3 times fast), there is virtually no difference between BJ Hayes and Phillip Nolan.

Exactly. I mean yes he has a nice stroke but he looks very 1 dimensional player. Just not impressed with this pick and JC has had reaches before that didn't pan out(look at all the transfers). Just not impressed but like I said if he helps are APR I have no issues with him taking a spot. We need practice players and he does have some height.

Oh my god.

You watched an 8-minute YouTube video with no context of the competition - stop trying to draw any conclusions.

If he's another Niels Giffey, then we have a glue guy that will be part of our rotation for 4 years and won't complain about a damn thing. Those kinds of players are important too. No one is proclaiming that he's more than that, and he doesn't have to be more than that.

Maybe in terms of upside potential. Seems to me their games and skill set are completely different. Between Nolan, Olander, and now the German, seems like the closest thing to a layup will be olander taking a jumpshot from the foul line extended. I get the staff is in a bit of jam to fill out a roster, but to give a scholarship on a reach player is exactly the same recipe that got us into this mess in the first place.

I don't remember too many people being that hyped about Jeremy Lamb, so i'm gunna wait and see from now on...

Before we got Nolan and Leon, we had 8 scholarship players. Did you really want to go into next year with 8 guys? I know, in a perfect world we wouldn't be signing "reaches" but there aren't too many non-reaches out there.

And you keep putting Bradley Hayes in the non-reach category despite the fact that nobody had even heard of him 4 weeks ago. Again, there's a reason for that.

That's unusual!!:)

Please, you can't compare JL to this player. I know I was hyped as he was a boderline top 50 recruit. This guy wouldn't even be in the top 250 if he was playing high school ball here. No comparison at all. I guess JC knows what he is doing but like someone else mentioned we seem to be filling out the roster with a lot of reaches like we did when we got the Jonathan Mandelove's, Rob Garrison's, Ben Eave's, Darius Smith's and Jamall Trice's of the world. Though if I remember DS was a boderline top 100 almost but the other guys were just filling in roster spots and it ended bad for us.

You have absolutely no idea if this is true. You watched a youtube highlight video of the kid. DeAndre Daniels looked like Scottie Pippen in his youtube highlights.

With our post season ban, getting a legit D1 talent at this late stage is fine with me.
Let's give the kid a chance before we label him a reach. Granted the program could use another big, but we seem to have enough ships to add a shooter.

Who is behind this germany connection? I haven't heard anything about which coach keeps landing these kids from Germany. Anyone know? We are already 0 for 2 with kids from there, maybe this one will pan out.

I really wish we hit the JUCO route more often. The JUCO kids seem much more ready to play right away and worst care scenario if they don't work out, they are out of the system in 2 years. We haven't had a JUCO player since I think selvie, which was probably 5+ years ago.

He looks smooth and I'm definitely looking forward to see what he can do

He's got good size for a 2G--he's not 6-8 but I would believe 6-5 215. He can handle the ball well with both hands shoot rebound. He's going to have some trouble with speed of the game IMHO kind of like Wolf.

I believe it was LaFlauer who was overseas recruiting Giffey & Wolf, and I'm not sure how we're 0/2. Giffey played big minutes in 2 Final 4 games and looks like he'll be a solid rotation player at least, you need guys like that to fill out a roster.

I didn't compare the 2, i have no idea where you got that from...I just like to see what happens before i shove my foot in my mouth...

Hey everybody is entitled to his opinion. I hope I'm wrong and this guys develops into a decent player but right now it feels like a reach like we have seen in some of the other classes that didn't work out. Nolan pickup I love due to potential but this one has me bewildered.

A lot will depend on how tall this kid actually is. If he is a legit 6'7, he could play the 4 at 220. If he's 6'5, then he's probably not. At the worst UConn signed a good 3-point shooter (36% from the FIBA line is good) who can be a 8th or 9th man. You aren't looking for a star in this class (spring recruits at least).

There are still plenty of scholarships available for the next two years, as long as he doesn't transfer, I love this signing, if only because it gives UConn 10 bodies to play 5 on 5 with in practice.

Right now UConn only has:

PG: Napier vs. Boatright (Allen)
SG: Evans vs. Calhoun
SF: Giffey vs. Daniels
PF: Olander vs. Tolksdorf
C: Wolf vs. Nolan

As for where he may stand in his class. Doug McDermott was the 28th SF in his class (ESPN). Jerian Grant was the 19th SF in the same class and was the final SF in the ESPN top 100 at 96. That would put McDermott at 109 at the best, if 101-109 were all SFs.

Tim Abromaitis was the 39th SF in his class. The lowest SF in 2007 in the ESPN top 100 was Tyrone Shelley at 99, he was the 16th overall SF.

I'm not saying this kid is anywhere near as good as the two above but it's not unheard of to have a lowly ranked recruit be a fantastic college player and this kid is even harder to judge.

I think the US born players should take German in the summer so they can learn a couple of German phrases that will come in handy this season such as, "Get the hell out of the way!", "Pass it out!" and "I said Gatorade, not water!! Damn, how hard is it to remember??"

Pippen averaged 4.3 pt/gm, 3 boards, and less than an assist his freshman year. So if this team is to be any good DD has to step it up like Scottie did

I don't know, maybe if we keep recruiting them we could find ourselves a Dirk Nowitzki.;)
