OT: Thinking Maybe UConn Isn’t a “Football School.”

UCF were kinda/sorta/allegedly co-National Champions last year!

Man... just stop that Head bang

In fairness UCF is legit. They were undefeated last year. This is only Edsall's 2nd season and first with his own recruited kids. Give him time.

This is his 2nd chance.

:) What was your first clue?:D
LOL, I hear Ansonia has an open date. Never mind. Don't you think it's time to stop beating this dead horse. Let's face it, we all know that the move to "big time" football was a disasteroous mistake, some 20 years ago. Just like the politics of Connecticut, they continue to dig themselves deeper into a hole, and are too stubborn to realize, that the best thing to do is to STOP DIGGING. Like the child, in the room full of horse poop, he keeps digging around, looking for the pony. Head bang

They might be competitive at the FCS level. Or maybe not.

Throwing shade on your brethren. Nice.

You also realize the success of this same brethren is a necessary condition of WCBB longterm success?

So where you a fan of UConn women before Geno came or won his first title I’m sure most of us weren’t.i have more confidence in Edsel then the previous 2 coaches , all it takes it the right coach and one or 2 good recruits to change a program

Hopefully, we hit the bottom and can only go up from here!!! Edsall and staff are much better than PP and BD. Those 2 HCs brought the UConn program to the lowest of the low!!!!

.-.
Hey, we have 8 UConn alums in the NFL
I said then it'd take 5 years to recover from PP. BD was a waste; so, it'll take 3 years longer

When my daughter attended Uconn, I'd visit her on a saturday and if the football team had a game, the entire campus was involved in this game, unlike now, where the game is off campus.
You could wander into the football stadium in the 4th quarter, box office would be closed, everyone was cheering the home team, no such thing as boos, the score didn't matter that much, everyone had a good time, and no one was leaving. The idea was to enjoy the football, the players, the campus and the kids.
In those days, attendance of 27,000 people would not be considered a massive failure, it would have been impossible as the stadium was smaller, just the right size for the campus. The idea of being a draw from multiple dates never entered into the equation. I miss those days.

I am thinking that UCLA isnt a football school either :p:rolleyes:

Ok that’s fine but you realize that’s akin to saying you miss the days of the rotary phone.
You can go back to that time but understand that the world has passed you by.

If UConn does not get into a power football conference then UConn WCBb is done within a decade after Geno retires.

They'd better figure out how to become a football school because being a women's basketball school ain't going to cut it as a long-term plan.

Football definitely pays the bills, with help from MBB.

If UConn is unsuccessful in turning their football program around (becoming a viable competitive program) in the next 10 years, what are its options. It appears they are in a holding pattern of mediocrity. What do they do? What would you do?

How about applying for membership in the Big East? :-}

What prevents UConn from becoming a viable competitive football school is money. Ever since I started following UConn in the 1950's and attending from 1961, and graduating in 64, the CT state legislature has not given UConn the funds to position itself as a football powerhouse. The stadium in EH should have been for 80,000. The State Legislature never realiazed and still does not, that football is sports king even with the successes of men and women's basketball. They should have paid big bucks and hired a household name for coach from a prized football school before Edsall 1. Then there was PP and other guy and now Edsall 2. Pay the bucks, get the results. But, history shows that they are always a day late and dollar short. Heck it must be difficult when financially for the whole state because when I read the online Courant, they are always in financial trouble, raising taxes, and getting a lot less for their money. Sorry, but that is what an outsider sees.

Unfortunately, UConn got left behind in conference realignment. The American Athletic Conference is a mid-major conference and is not viable for UConn athletics long term. It's just a matter of time before WBB starts to suffer, so we better enjoy what we have now while it lasts. I suspect UConn WBB will go the way of Old Dominion and LaTech once Geno retires.

That is exactly why the women's basketball team has not lost to an AAC opponent yet. Go to ESPN's "Hoopgurlz", closely look at the last 2 years, and notice how many of the top 100 rated prospects committed to a AAC program other than UConn and USF. AAC schools simply don't attract top 100 prospective recruits. This explains this disparity in talent levels. They are trying very hard to do more with less. They are doing the very best they can.

Well, if you're not convinced after their loss to Cincinnati, you'll find out for sure this Saturday when they play Oklahoma in Norman. Chip Kelly better have some tricks up his sleeve for this one.

PAC-12 is looking like a mid-major football conference themselves nowadays. 1 for 8 in bowl games last year. No NCs for the conference for the last 14 years (and the last one - 2004 - was vacated by USC for the Reggie Bush cheating scandal). Washington was the PAC-12's big hope this year, but now they have an uphill battle after their opening loss this weekend.

I would say the PAC in football has been disappointing. Not so much mid-major-ish as a lot of good, not great, combined with a lot of general inconsistency.

I don't even want to discuss Arizona.

Except that, to the original point of the thread - maybe UConn isn't a football school and maybe they never will be. Arizona isn't. Part of what defines it that way is, ultimately, fan interest. Yes, you can get 50,000 out to opening day. But the football program is never the hot topic of discussion that the men's basketball team is.

Part of what I see that defines Arizona is success in so many different sports. Not all in one year - and not as much recently, from what I read. But Volleyball is consistently good, Women's golf won the Natty, both golf programs have in the past, swimming and gymnastics are known for competing well, Women's Soccer was ranked at the start of the year, Softball with the 8 Championships, Baseball another one just a few years ago and etc. The goal is to become (again) competitive for the Sears Trophy under whatever name it is today - i.e. the best across all programs. We were high but have sagged in recent years.

UConn's problem is the conference. You don't have to be the best athletic school or even a great football school, if you are in a P5 conference. I know its beating a dead horse, but that has to be the goal.

UConn is not competitive in football anywhere in Division I. Hasn't been for a long time. Would be better off deleting the sport so Basketball programs could join top leagues.

Yeah, appreciate the enthusiasm, but no.

Agree, of course to get a P5 (which is a football based term) invite, you need to be a football school. That's it in a nutshell.
