They will fear us Again

Hubris is the first domino to fall. I don't think I've ever heard Geno predict dominance, repeats or three-peats. That's why he's the best.

I doubt he has ever said, "they will fear us."
Yeah, it was @gold2323.

Although he did predict a repeat for 2000-2001 season. When he had probably the best team ever assembled. But then, yeah dominoes fell.

They certainly have a lot of very highly regarded players so the expectation is they should be really good. Feared though?? I don't know about that. Can Azzi actually lead the team? Will they develop any type of post game? Will they be healthy? I think UConn is potentially a great team and I would pick them to win it all but LSU, ND and SC all will have no fear when playing them.

Wellll, I’m thinking South Carolina may have a bit of a hangover at least!🤣

I was standing on the Capital lawn following a victory parade and Geno guaranteed on NC for the following year. I don't remember the circumstances, but it didn't come to pass.

Fair enough, but context is everything.

Not sure about the use of the word "fear". Kids 18-22 don't fear much, aside from their own insecurities. I argue that kids can "feel" how good an opponent is on the floor. Paige's confidence and all-around ability is felt by the opponent. Sarah's strength, etc. KK's and Ash's consistent intensity. It's tactile. The speed of the game that Coach Close referred to during the game. The explosiveness of the team offensively. SC inching back in the championship game with their sluggish offense with limited scoring options, quick touch-pass to Azzi in the corner, boom, camera cuts to Dawn as she throws her head back yelling an expletive. There's nothing she could do about that. Besides, they couldn't score anyway. That's the feeling of getting trampled.
I'm a fan since 17 (Gabby, Phee, Katie Lou, Kia). You guys that have been here from the beginning, have you seen a squad with this much firepower?

UConn will be overwhelming this season. Way to many players who can do to many things with quickness, speed and confidence. This all comes from Geno's instruction and teaching. UConn can throw to many really good players at opponents continually and not let up. That goes for both sides of the ball. At UConn you not only get and education on how to play team BB you learn your limitations and how to overcome your weaknesses. You play to your strengths however you know your weaknesses and will at some point learn to overcome them.

There have been years where I was wishing that players further down the bench like the 7, 8, or 9th would get more minutes so they wouldn’t be as lost if they had to fill in for injured teammates. And keeping my fingers crossed because as much as I love every player on the team sometimes players just don’t reach the level needed to be the best team on the floor.

It’s still fresh in my memory where we had so many injuries to starter level players that we had a game rescheduled because we didn’t have enough players to play. And the “team” played beyond any reasonable expectation.

Yes, the season started just a few days ago and I’m seeing a potential team where 4, 5, 6 players can rest/recover nagging minor traumas and the 8-9 talented players available as just “different” not more or less than.

As I think about it, this human experience is really something else. I find myself thankful that it appears that I may have another season to enjoy watching my favorite team.

Golly-Gee I really enjoy watching these girls grow into themselves and then leave. And then we have new seniors/freshmen and kids between grow.

Geno wouldn’t say it because it would be counterproductive in a few ways. But we fans can say it, and I suspect most of us on the BY think it.

And while we’re on this topic, is there anyone UConn should fear? This season, the same as last season, UCLA SC and Texas, and maybe Tennessee. This doesn’t mean they aren’t surmountable obstacles. But they are considerable opponents. I suspect we’ll get past all of them but they’d be interesting games if they happen. Next season, I wonder if the main team to worry about out will be USC, what with the return of Juju joining up with Jazzy and Kennedy and whatever transfers Lindsay can cobble together. That’s a Big Three right there.

The only team our Huskies should fear is UCONN, itself. Respect yes, fear no way. With the talent on this team there is no other team we cannot beat, no other team with more talent. We play to our potential; no other team will be celebrating after the final horn goes off. If yes if we play to our potential, the Huskies will play some great games, some really good games, games that may be average. The worry, the fear that they may stink up the gym on a given night should be the team's only fear. That fear should be nothing more than a tiny thought tucked away in almost no one's mind.

I'm not convinced that there's ever been a team with as much talent as the pre-injury 2000-2011 team.
Be more specific. I'm just saying firepower. Explosiveness. I'm not sure talent is the same thing. I guess it is. I mean Azzi can score 15 points in 5 minutes. Sarah scores wherever and whenever it's needed. Didn't Ash get like 15-18 in a quarter last year?

Svetlana Abrosimova as a sophomore(?) scored 39 points in a game where she sat a number of minutes and missed about six free throws. As a senior she was competing with Tamika Catchings for player of the year until both got hurt. Do I really have to justify Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Swin Cash?

Nice post. Thanks. Who's Diana Taurasi? (just kidding)

It was at the Capital ceremony following the 1999-2000 team going 36-1 to win the national championship. They had AP All-Americans Shea and Sveta returning, the TASSK force (Tamika, Asjha, Sue, Swin, and Keirsten) returning, and the #1 HS recruit Dee coming in. Then during the next year both All-Americans went down for the year with injuries and in the national semifinal game the freshman Diana had the worst shooting game of her life as the team lost to Notre Dame. Geno learned his lesson and now says his team will be in the hunt for another NC, but with no guarantees.
