Well none of the Sox other starters seemed to be able to throw the ball remotely near the plate....maybe he figured Kimbrel would follow suit. heh heh
 
What was the point of signing David price? He is a guaranteed L in October. It’s really quite amazing how bad he is.
 
As much as I dislike the Red Sox, I do feel like the playoff seeding needs to be addressed this offseason. How HOU got to play CLE in the 1st round despite not having best record is mind boggling. All year, the top 3 in the AL (and may be all of baseball) have been BOS-HOU-NYY. CLE got to beat up on a historically bad AL Central all year and are nowhere as good as NYY. Seedings need to be by final standings finish with no regard to division winners. Top seed plays lowest record, end of story. Not to mention, it's also an advantage to HOU to know full well they're playing CLE no matter what. BOS had to wait for the WC Game to know who they're playing to make final ALDS roster decisions. HOU should've had to wait too.

The presumption that the wild card team is the lesser team is one that needs to stop. Go by records not division championships.

Yup. Both NYY and OAK finished with a better record than CLE...who plays in a much weaker division than both the AL East and AL West. Heck, the Rays would have finished 1 GB of CLE if there were in the AL Central. Might have even won the division too if they were able to play those garbage Central teams instead of the NYY/BOS all season. Should be seeded by record, not division winners. BOS would have easily swept CLE too.
 
Edge of the cliff not dead yet but hanging on by their finger tips 4 runs feels like 8.
 
Getting Stanton to strike out with 2 on base in the bottom of the ninth was a relief.

I sincerely hope that Kimbrel has gotten this out of his system and is able to calm down. He was overthrowing every pitch, looking like a guy who had never seen that kind of situation before. He was anything but the calm, cool guy you want closing out games.
 
Tough way to end the season for sure but what can you do? Boston and Houston have been on a collision course since spring training. Will be a helluva series.

Side note: has anyone else noticed that our guy Springer is getting postseason white hot again? Dude has ice in his veins in the big spot...no surprise he's from UConn! ;)

Sox are way more clutch then the Yankees it's why I wasn't too optimistic about the Yankees chances don't get me wrong I had confidence in this team after game 2, but not really surprised the lineup laid an egg and of course it didn't help that not a single pitcher could go 5 innings except for Tanaka. Sox were more prepared and want it more.
 
Boone didn't utilize the team strength early enough: bullpen. Yankee starters era was north of 10.
 
Still need good starters to win in the post-season.

Boston is legit..but a scary pen. Astros will be rough.

Unbelievably it has now been 14 years and 4 straight games where Boston beat Yankees in NY in the playoffs. Unthinkable pre-2004.
 
Boone was a disaster. Yankees need an ace starting pitcher badly they should have already gotten Cole now they need to get MadBum, they'll probably waste money on Harper.

Houston is a team without any glaring weakness. Would have liked the Boston pen a lot better if Wright was available for long and spot relief.
 
Yanks have a few serious problems/ holes to deal with. This falls squarely on Cashman's shoulders.

1. Two quality starting pitchers. Nothing in the minors ready to make the jump. Montgomery may be ready for next season but Tommy John surgery can take up to 18 months for complete recovery. Cash wants to stay under the salary cap but you have got to spend some too get some.

2. A legitimate leadoff hitter and number 2 hitter. Both need to average .300+ for a full season.

3. Sorry to Boone and Girardi but Judge is not a number 2 hitter. He should be hitting in the 3, 4 or 5 spot. Too many solo homeruns - nobody on base.

4. Need a healthy and productive first baseman. Bird is not the answer. Voit looked very good in his time but not sure he is the answer. But I'll play Voit over Bird.

5. And a note to Cashman and Boone - get your nose out the damn saber metrics notebooks and look what is happening on the field. Trust your eyes and your gut.

Bingo. I'll give him a pass for it to some extent in Game 3 because Severino is the supposed staff ace. I think he was hoping to get through 5 and that Severino would eventually figure it out as he went through the 2nd turn in the lineup. He didn't. But no excuse for last night. CC was not sharp right out of the gate. Left way too many good pitches out over the plate all night. Elimination games have to be managed differently than others. If a SP doesn't have it early, especially one of your mid to back-end rotation SPs, then you need to quick hook him. And especially since the strength of the Yankee pitching rotation is its bullpen, like you said.

Ironically, Cora managed last night how Boone should've. First sign of tiring from Porcello and he was out. Wasn't going to let Judge face him a 3rd time as Ron Darling mentioned last night. Very smart. Brought in his best middle guy to get out Judge-Didi-Stanton then pick and chose spots to get to Kimbrel.
 
The Yankees' window is a lot wider than the Sox, who have to start paying up on young players soon. Sox are just a better team right now.

Relates to your point #2, but I don't think a team built on bludgeoning the opponent to death is going to be as successful in the post season, when pitching is better, than in the regular season. If you're going to win in the regular season, you need people who can deliver singles with RISP a decent amount of the times. That was not the Yankees.
