It is 1:40 AM, and I am still too wound up to go to sleep. I will be lucky to get 3 hours of sleep tonight. Going to be a lonnnnnnnggggggg day of work tomorrow.

I was knocked out after checking out the post game recap. I can handle losing to a team like ND. I hate when we lose games (which is rare..thank goodness) like the ones against teams like St. John's. Those are the ones that keep me up and avoid watching the news or some other sports channel.

The worst thing for me was that I was sitting next a very large ND fan at the game last night. I had paid for one seat but only got to use half of it.

the hardest part was seeing the white towel thrown in with more than 3 minutes to play. how can you do that against a team that you're probably going to play one more time, and maybe twice. i'm one angry fan.

That is DEFINITELY the worst!!!

Glad she didn't say an excessively large UConn fan. I would have had to prove I was in PA.

Ugh.

If I were in your shoes (seat), I would have to agree. :D

I admit to some enthusiastic clapping using my entire personal space which gained me a bit more room for a while. If the team had given me more to clap about, I might have been able to use my entire seat for the whole game.

Gotta use those hips to create some space to get the shot off.....err or cheer as the case may be.

Nan, ya gotta back 'em up and use the backside to gain position. ;)

Considering the very high standards that we have set, the thoughts of losing 2 in a row at home and 3 in a row to one team are very unpalatable.

I actually liked that move by Geno. It wasn't getting any better, three mins left, and no ball movement. What were they going to accomplish in the last 3 that they didn't do in the prior 4-5 mins? If kids aren't listening, plays out of time outs aren't being executed, then this was a good message, IMHO.

i can't imagine what you liked about that move. teams have to somehow learn to fight to the end. imo, nothing good comes out of quitting. how about those 4 coaches figuring out some way to get those kids listening? it's at those times in the game when those coaches really earn their bucks. this is a young team that really needs cooler heads in that situations . what went on the prior 4 minutes has nothing to do with the next 3 minutes. i absolutely think that the coaches quit on the players. a couple of them commented afterwards that they thought there was time, and they wanted back on the floor. it was almost like geno did not want to go head -to-head with muffet any longer.

No, the coaches didn't quit. They basically said if you are not willing to listen and to execute what we said to do we will give other kids the chance to do that. The coaches coached for further down the road. It is now critical that the kids are focused and hear and execute what they are given to do.

If the coaches haven't been able to get the players to listen to them for the last 4 months, how do you figure they're going to do it in 3 minutes?

Do you have kids? I have two teenaged sons. They're good kids, too, but at that age they know everything and they tend to do what they think is right or what has worked for them in the past and ignore the folks that make what they see as crazy rules. (kind of like some Boneyarders, now that I think of it) This is an immature team that needs to grow up.

I think that maybe the team got a lesson when they were yanked and had to watch from the bench. Why give someone who refuses to listen in previous timeouts an opportunity for game time without any penalties???? Had there been any following of instructions, there might have been a much better outcome whereas they would have still been in the game with a chance to win. Rewarding someone with playing time when they play poorly or don't heed isn't healthy. Geno doesn't do that in practice so why should he do that in a game environment?????

It you watched the reaction of Stef and Tiff and Bria when Geno pulled the five is was complete and utter shock. Message sent and I believe message received.

Time will tell for this young team. They do need to mature as a team and as individuals. A loss can be a prime teaching moment, though none of the fans like it. With Geno, if you don't compete with everything you have, you sit. If you don't listen, you sit.

I also think that for some of these kids they've never been punched in the mouth like that. These kids were alwyas the biggest and the fastest on the court. They'll learn to fight after it happens a couple of times.

I give Geno a ton of credit for pulling the starters. They weren't getting it done, so he pulled them. It was a very strong message to his players; if you aren't going to step up and listen, then you aren't going to play. The look of shock on their faces says it all, they definitely got the message. Now lets see if it carries through to the tournaments ahead.

I just posted in another thread that he pulled them after some players were playing zone and others were playing man. And this was right after a timeout 1 minute earlier. He'd had enough at that point.

I am a whistle to whistle kind of guy. I have to admit that I didn't like it when he pulled the starters and threw up the white flag. I liked it even less when Muffet McGraw kept her starters in for 2 minutes and 20 seconds longer. But, then I noticed that the 2nd team did not allow ND's starters to score. In a way that was a teachable moment for Geno. After all those guys were able to stop ND for 2 minutes and 20 seconds why couldn't you. It is true that the second team didn't score either but then again I wasn't expecting to either. At the end of the day, I may not have liked the move...as I like to fight until the final whistle...but, if Geno feels that the team isn't fighting then he had more to gain by pulling them than letting finish with a lack luster heartless effort...and, he does make the big bucks for a reason.

Speaking of the second unit - interesting stat - as noted above mostly against ND's starters:

Offensive rebounds:
1st team + rotation players: 186 minutes, 3 offensive rebounds
Non-rotation players (Buck, Engeln, Johnson, Banks): 14 minutes, 3 offensive rebounds.

The crowd did rouse to give Heather a big hand when she fought for an offensive rebound. I wish this were Heather's freshman year rather than a redshirt junior season. She has untapped potential, something we got glimpses of this year.

my problem with what a lot of you are saying here is that i really didn't see the lack of effort that you saw. i thought that ND was quicker , stronger, and showed their "age", especially in the 2nd half. re uconn, what i saw was a lot of confusion at times, at both ends of the floor. and, ultimately, that falls in the laps of the coaches. i'm sorry, but hard to imagine, for example, that 4 coaches can't get 5 players on board as to whether they're playing man or zone, no matter how "immature" they are. set up chairs out on the floor away from the crowd, and make it clear. actually, i think it would be interesting to have their huddles "miked" for a game.

Make what clear? That he's unhappy? I imagine the team already knew that.

I would be interested to know how Geno & the coaches were supposed to get the players "on board". Please elaborate.

Amen, Nan! I no longer have teens (23 and 20), but they are no less stubborn and pig headed about parental advice. Well, that is not exactly true. The 23 year old now sees that maybe Mama knew more then he gave me credit for. The 20 year old hasn't turned that corner yet, but it will come. Life's lessons have a way of doing that. And this team is dealing with some basketball life lessons that they will hopefully learn from down the road.
