The View From Section 241 — Rice

Crazy injuries happen all the time. Casey Cochran’s career was ended when he got a concussion getting hit in the head in the weight room! My neighbor’s daughter gave up marching in the flag corps after she got her 3rd concussion from getting hit by a flag staff. We know a woman who ended her soccer career after tripping over a piece of equipment and hitting her head on a goal. The equipment was supposed to be on the bench but someone moved it. I tend to believe any strange injury is possible. Seen too many.
I thought Casey got hurt playing BYU.

He’s been in the rotation, was on Saturday, and is probably getting the 4th most snaps among WRs. We have three who from what we’ve seen are probably better than him. Nothing surprising here.
I never his name until later in the 4th and assumed he was not in the rotation. Huh!

Conspiracy theories are rubbish. But to me, the only thing that matters is what happens on the field during a game. Practice doesn't count. And in terms of the only things that matter, the BY has seen exactly what the coaches have seen and perhaps from even from a better real time perspective, an elevated view. And what we have seen is that Evers should sit.
Practice doesn’t count? Thankful you aren’t a coach at UConn for any sport.

Nope.

You can say it till you are blue in the face. But he is starting because of recruiting promises.

You’re just being naive.
And you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

I can guarantee he didn't drop 225lbs on his toe. It might have been 225lbs on a bar, but the actual weight hitting the toe was way less.
I was going to say that but the Evers defenders here would have gone wild. It would have crushed his toe if 225 lb had dropped on it. And the way a trap bar is constructed it is almost impossible for a foot to get under the plates.

Correct, unless you stand it on end and smack it with the end of the bar. Can’t say I’ve ever seen that in the weight room!

If this is true he shouldn't have played. If he cant run then he isn't worthwhile

Probably the most likely thing is that it happened loading or unloading the bar and a 20 kg plate flopped over on it or maybe dropped a very short distance and the story got changed by the PR department..

Or maybe it was only 248 pounds. Honestly. Who cares. He was weight lifting and dropped something on his toe. It probably wasn’t 250 pounds. That was probably what he was lifting, but Mora just used shorthand, most likely because HE didn’t know exactly.

Cochran actually had something like 13 concussions. So he retired. But at least a few were in the weight room.

My best guess on the Evers/Fagnano thing is that Mora believes that a fully mobile Evers is his best option. He knows that Evers has some accuracy/progression issues, but feels like with more game time those will improve. Right now he knows that Evers isn't fully mobile so that part of his game is lacking, but he feels as if the investment in him now will pay dividends when he's fully healed up.

As to the notion that Mora promised Evers the starting spot and feels bound by it, I doubt it. The whole he dropped a weight on his foot thing, had his nail removed, had to play in lineman shoes, was pretty much a get out of jail free card for Mora. If he wanted to start Fagnano due to the injury of Evers, he had a built-in narrative for it.

Again, I have no strong preference between Fagnano and Evers. They each bring something to the table, and they each have their liabilities. I'm hoping for a more coherent offense against Georgia State. I would really like to avoid the slow start and then frantic catch-up thing that we've had going. A slowly building steady lead would be a nice change of pace.

Mora is putting a lot of faith/confidence in the Sammis/Robbins duo to figure it out. They’re 5-3 and he knows what he has in the RB/WR rooms..

I will say…it was good to see Evers not sliding on runs. I just hope he starts showing more evasiveness on his runs.

Ask every poster on the BY FB forum: "Would you have benched Nick Evers at the half(or sooner) of the Rice game in favor of Joe Fagnano?"
I'll bet you would get 100% YES.

Yet, the Coaches(who also view from the top of Stadium in real time) also spend hours breaking down game film afterwards, with the ability to isolate and cut it up any way they want(the film guys are magic that way) continue to play him.

Either they are totally incompetent, or they think he's going to pop, and they are ok with the results so far. Both cannot be true.

I'm in the scratch my head and "In Mora we Trust" camp.

Mora could change his tune at halftime of the GA State game if there is regression by NE. To quote the eminent BY philosopher BizLaw "Sheesh"
I believed Mora should and would pull Evers at halftime of the Rice game. Nope.

We will see what happens this Friday. If we jump on GS from the outset and the O is moving the ball, the NE/JF controversy is moot, at least until the next game. But if we are trailng say 14-3 at the half with Evers playing poorly, and JM keeps him in the game, which we ultimately lose due to lack of offense, I'll have to assume a promise or "firm committment" of some sort was made to Evers.

This is the last chance we have to get to bowl eligibility at home. Historically we don't win much on the road so anthing can happen over the last 3 games, even at UMass. If NE falters against GS, they need to go to JF.

Not getting paid right now.

Are you saying he’s solid too? This is fantastic.
NFL career. You are elite by definition. You don't have to like him or his results but......alot of really good QB's never played or suited up in the NFL. Just sayin'

Boy, he was an interception machine though wasn't he!!

You are worried about worst case scenario, you are not alone!! We are just about in the Welliver keep the redshirt zone(3 games). If you have to make a change would you rather see Welliver and find out about him or go with Joe with a knowledge of his capabilities? I go Joe.

Best case scenario Nicks toenail has grown back and he is a little more loose and confident in his pass game. Go Huskies.

Thinking you were being facetious here. Five or six months maybe even longer to grow back. But if he hasn't broken it or gotten it infected, it should not be bothering him much unless the daily practice grind aggravates it.

Yup, just relax and play the game!!!

He got lucky with his arm strength, then Aaron Rodgers getting a mancrush on him and then being on some badly managed teams that didn’t manage their rosters well.

It’s like every time he gets on the field people see what a galactically, no cosmic error it is that he suits up on Sundays.

Robbin’s story:

Doesn't come across as a dynamic teacher. Love him or hate him, but Skip Holtz always made you feel like you wanted to go "play some ball". Loved him but organizationally not so much.

3:1 interceptions to td's

You got that assessment from a 3 minute intro made a month after he was hired? What else have you read/heard about him?

Actually, very little. Would love to hear more, really hoping he's a QB whisperer. Got any insight?

If we've gotten to bowl eligability, I want to see CW. If we're still hunting for win 6, I'd like to see JF. That said, I'd like to see NE start playing well most of all. He's had a lot of starts and stops this season.... out vs. Merrimack. Comes back vs. Duke, which is tough. Plays a weird game vs. FAU where we don't pass in the 2nd half. Gets into a little bit of a rhythm vs. Buffalo and gets knocked out again. Sits vs. Temple, then a bye, comes back vs. Wake and Rice. Lets see what he does now with a third straight week of play.

I'm concerned he hasn't progressed faster, but there's been a lot of starting and stopping.
