Clay Travis is famous for saying stupid things as a means to stir up controversy and draw attention to himself, however unwarranted. In this piece, he succeeds in all respects, and on a level unprecedented even for him, which is saying a lot. It is specifically designed to appeal to a variety of regional prejudices which like to subscribe to the idea that certain fanbases, especially in the SEC, are comprised of a bunch of redneck yokels, as opposed to the more "enlightened" and "culturally elite" fans elsewhere. Such prejudices flourish wherever envy exists relative to the quality and success of of one's own team' athletics vis a vis those of the targeted programs, most notably of Alabama.
