We spend a lot of time on this board discussing the fact that the CFB playoffs always include the same teams and why it is so difficult for anyone else to compete with them. Top prospects being concentrated if fewer programs is probably a big reason.

As of Thursday Alabama had commitments from the top recruit from the state of Texas in the following positions: Quarter Back, Running Back, Center, Offensive Tackle, Inside Linebacker, Wide Receiver.

To someone who remembers a time when a top recruit from Texas never left the state this is amazing.

It sure is puzzling, especially for a school with its own network.
Maybe it's the allure of playing for Saban or the hype ESPN gives its "partner", the SEC.
Their constant and breathtaking pronouncements of its greatness in their productions of "special" after "special" on the SEC and all its great moments, players, etc. has to influence lots of kids...................along with the $ of course.

Remember when no one left Florida..

It's why Hermans job should be at risk. UT is a better school in a better city than UA. Yet the top players choose to leave home.

I wonder how much longer saban will coach. He has quite a machine down there.

UT is a mess from the boosters, the politicians, the administration, AD, and coaching.

They think they are something they are not. What they are is a team that used to dominate the Southwest conference and then occasionally win the Big12 if Nebraska and Oklahoma weren't. They routinely underperfomed nationally to Oklahoma. They think they are a national power.

The correct opinion is they should he a national power, but their internal politics will prevent that as it always has.

Saban's decision to open up the offense is a game changer.
Saban was always known for great D's and producing NFL defenders.

With Sarkisian onboard as the O coordinator, it's a different mindset for recruits.

Skill players all over the field. Used to just be linemen and RB's from Bama.

I give saban credit for evolving. An old dog can learn new tricks.

Randy...you are on the clock.

Texas A&M moving to the SEC changed a lot of things. Allowed Texas A&M to compete for players they did not normally get. They used to get second choice after Texas chose their players. That has now cascaded to teams like Alabama and Florida to come into Texas and take out talent. They can tell these kids they will still get to play some games in Texas while annually competing for National Championships. No one in Texas can tell you that.

Shaky you have to realize that the top recruits don't care that UT is a better school than UA and that UA is in a better city. Bama is playing for the national championship every year. Roll Tide!!

You are absolutely correct unless your desire is to major in FB, then Tuscaloosa is the better destination.

Remember when no one left Florida..

I do, but GA, Bama and Auburn have been poaching top FL players each year for about a decade now. Until recently when an occasional top Texas prospect did leave the state it was usually for OK.

Thats the point.... Herman has failed because he has a better school in a better city and he can't convince recruits to stay home. He hasn't produced on the field. Hard to believe he lasts much longer.

Tuscaloosa is a better city? I’ve never been but spent some time in Anniston, AL. Haven’t been to Austin either but want to visit and let my freak flag fly.

Over longish periods, the rich have swings...where was Clemson before Dabo?

Michigan was once king. UCLA once held the throne. FSU and Miami were once the rich, as was Texas.

Now it is Alabama and Clemson...but that won't be forever.

USC was the second team to go wire to wire..preseason #1 to finish #1...

Seven AP or Coaches Poll National Championships...I remember the days of OJ...USC national championships in 1962, 1967, 1972, and 1974...

Don't fit Nebraska and Oklahoma were on top as well for a time being.

It does change a lot just seems to be every decade or so

Going to Bama is just like going to charter school now. Just enough "classwork" to keep the feds away.

Saban is very cold blooded (realistic, cynical) in his approach to top recruits. He openly tells them that since their goal is to get into the NFL as opposed to a degree, he understands that and will do everything he can to get them drafted. He does not expect them to graduate in 4 or 5 years. Their job, in addition to playing FB, is to stay eligible for as long as required. If they do graduate all the better.

Easy to guess who have the largest budgets for recruiting. Start with UGA at 4MM. We were about a tenth that in 2018.

It's all about the coach. If tomorrow Texas hired Saban --USC hired Urban.---even if Colorado hired Dabo. The players would soon arrive and so would the championships.

The coach comes with a financial commitment from the school. T a&m gave Fisher 75MM over 10 years, guaranteed, more spending on recruiting. Shady demanded more resources for the program before he signed anything at Rutgers...

From within:
It is a familiar field — all four participants have previously made the 7-year-old playoff system. It’s the sixth appearance for Alabama and Clemson and the fourth for Ohio State. Of the 28 all-time playoff slots those three teams (plus Oklahoma) have taken up 20. (Notre Dame is making its second playoff appearance.)

Only six teams have ever won a playoff game, with LSU, Georgia and Oregon joining Bama, Clemson and Ohio State. Only LSU (last year) has won a title other than the big three.

The lack of diversity at the top has proven problematic for the sport and frustrating for fans (especially of other teams). It feels like every year you can pencil in Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State and the entire season boils down to who gets to be the other guy.

Even worse, since the selection process is subjective, the past actually matters. And since top recruits naturally want to compete in the playoff, postseason success appears to beget even more postseason success by expanding the gap between the select few powers and everyone else.

Same problem with women's basketball...Notre Dame and or UConn have been in the Finals 12 times in the last eleven seasons...

It’s the 3rd or 4th time you have played that nugget in different threads... do you really believe that is an apt comparison to the perceived problem in CFB?

Except you totally miss the point. Women’s basketball doesn’t bring in big TV money.
