So far the series with Houston is a disaster. A complete pathetic performance by a Yankee team.

Michael Kay has opened the door. This may be the start.

This starts at the top. Brian Cashman has to go. Senior VP and General Manager hired in 1986. Assistant GM hired in 2001. Assistant GM Michael Fishman hired in 2005. VP of Baseball Operations Tim Naehring hired in 2007. VP of Domestic Scouting Operations Damon Openheimer hired in 2001. VP of Player Development Kevin Reese in 2007.

What has this group produced - not much. This is the executive team that built the present version of the Yankees. Too much reliance on analytics. No feel for the game. They should all be let go - fired. They have been too long in their jobs and I would say too comfortable.

Boone and the entire coaching staff should be fired within a week of the Yanks loosing the series to Houston. I believe the series is over tonight.

Fans started walking out in the 6th inning. Wake up front office.

The big question is does Hal Steinbrenner have the balls to get it done. Sad to say, I don't think so.

Very fair take.

I honestly don't know what to think. If DJ and Benintendi were healthy, the lineup and defense would look very different: two professional hitters who can set the table...last night's lineup could have looked like Benintendi, Judge, Stanton (DH), Rizzo, Torres, DJ, Bader, Cabrera, Trevino.

My biggest worry with Boone is that he's almost puppet to analytics department that is ruining the Yankees. I'm a math teacher, numbers are good, but I want a manager that uses numbers to the team's advantage when appropriately...I just feel Boone does whatever the numbers tell him to do, even when the analytical advantage isn't that strong.

Totally agree but teams have injuries let’s be honest they’re missing Brantley too a real good hitter but still find a way. DJ hasn’t been right for 2 years hopefully he comes back as well as Benetendi but it doesn’t excuse this pitiful effort and the roster which our GM left Boone with. I know other blame Boone he’s 2nd in that line for me. You don’t get rid of Cashman and his moves you continue to stroll into the playoffs with no shot. Let’s see if Hal has a sack like George?

No it doesn’t excuse it not at all I happen to be in Philly in right now and it’s wild as you would expect, Bryce Harper is exactly what this franchise needed totally inexcusable not even bother to engage in negotiations with him, not going after Machado I get since we signed DJ. Bryce Harper has too much of an attitude I guess lol.

I wonder if the worst thing that happened to Judge was the hunt for 62. He really was pressing at the end of the season and he hasn't really fully gotten his swing back.
He's sucked his last handful of playoff series.

Not a Yankees fit. He has too much fun out there, he plays too hard, talks too much, and worst of all he grows his hair and beard out.

Real fans don’t want a bunch of thumpers at all. A few guys who can approach the .280-.300 mark with a few guys who can thump or drive someone in.

Judge should be called Mr May he’s a .200 hitter in playoff appearances in almost 170 ABs. He lost a few million so far this offseason and deservedly so. 30 years old you want to resign him and he should want to stay a Yank. But if the Mets offer 8-10 years and he doesn’t like a 6-7 year at best then....next!
Look I’m of the old Earl Weaver school. Pitching, defense and 3-run homers Win games. The modern thinking though is everybody hits a home run. Or strikes out.

Not much more to be said. We all got our hopes up that this team would be different when they were rolling at the all star break. Consistent starting pitching and clutch hitting. It was nice while it lasted. Team needs significant changes...and I don't want to see them kill the budget for Judge.

So... who to root for in the world series? I usually root for the American League team....but I hate the Astros too much to see them win again. Gotta root for the underdog Phillies.

If the Yankees do not make significant changes, next year will be the same if not worse.

I do not support Cashman or his team. They have been in their positions way too long. The game is/ has past them by. Analytics has taken over all decisions. Cashman is wed to this and will not change.

Boone has to go. He is terrible. I was not a fan when Cashman hired him. The entire coaching staff has to go.

Yanks have 13 free agents. Obviously Judge is the major one.

Then you have:
Chapman
Rizzo
Benentendi
Britton
Severino
Taillon
Green
Castro
Carpenter
Gonzalez
And 6 others.

If Judge goes, the Yanks are toast. If he stays, they maybe toast unless major changes are made.

It's all in Hal Steinbrenner's court.

From childhood, I lived and died w/ the Yankees, but have backed off quite a bit from baseball. Judge's HR run captured my attention and I followed the end of the season into the playoffs - a strong reason why NYY needs to pay him to keep him. A few random thoughts from an old-timer.
  1. Judge's HR quest could well have led to his awful postseason. He struggled to get to 61, 62. Did he subtly change his swing and lose his timing in going for the AL record? Somewhat akin to why some guys avoid the HR derby
  2. Injuries absolutely hurt NY. LeMahieu, Benintendi, Britton, and a healthy Carpenter could have made a difference. Cabrera may be a great player but he was over his head in the deep end of the pool and Carpenter clearly wasn't ready to go.
  3. The NYY scouting and farm system is failing. Houston can build a nice pitching staff, replace Correa with a rookie who's a Gold Glove finalist and hits 22 HRs. Clark Schmidt? What happened to Deivi Garcia? Peraza, Volpe and Dominguez may be stars, but too few players come up through the system that NY has to put on the field.
  4. Cashman has made some nice moves, but he's also swung and missed quite a bit too. NYY skews to older veterans and too often, like Donaldson, they are on the decline. LeMahieu signs a $90 million contract without a position. He's most comfortable @ 2nd and Cashman knew that Torres wasn't cutting it at shortstop. And 2nd will probably be Volpe's best position.
  5. Steinbrenner is again locked into some big contracts that I hope won't affect his motivation to build the best team possible - Stanton 5 more years, Cole 6.

Cashman and Boone HAVE to go. Then they need to stop doing this penny pinching nonsense in the offseason (like signing IKF instead of other options). They need to get back to acting like the Yankees - firing Cashman and Boone is step 1.

You may be right - I think they should sign him, but only if the price is right. NO need to give any more than 6-7 years. If Cohen wants to give him 10 year and like $400 million so be it.

I keep thinking about a discussion I had (with the young co-worker I've mentioned) at the start of the season and how angry I was at the Donaldson acquisition. Looking at our prospects, at the time it appeared very logical that Peraza and Volpe (in however the positions fell out) would be our future at second and short. Believing as much as I do in the importance of infield defense. I would have moved Gleyber to third (he never should have been a shortstop and his body type is closer to what would be expected from a third baseman than a middle infielder), allowing DJ to play his more natural position.

We could have added a defense first shortstop as a stop gap (I've wanted Andrelton Simmons since we let Didi walk) and gone from there. That would not have committed $50 million (on a team that claims to be fiscally responsible) to an over the hill player.

I'm convinced (have been since the trade, even with no actual evidence or any means of proving my belief) that our taking Donaldson was part of an agreement with the Twins where they would take Correa off the market as NYC sports talk was getting bombarded with phone calls from Yankee fans claiming we needed to sign him. Cashman was tired of hearing it and took on Donaldson's contract to end the discussion.

I think I’m at the point where I dislike the Astros more than the Red Sox so that, plus living a half hour from Philly will make me a Phils Phan for the next couple of weeks. But it’s a tough pill to swallow.

If Cashman and Boone are back it will be an absolute disgrace.

Replace them with Jeter and Mattingly respectively.
No doubt that Cashman and Boone have to go. But Mattingly as manager is NOT the answer.

Aside from the obvious roster construction flaws, a big issue for this team is a lack of fire, leadership and passion. Boone has the lip service, but the team plays way to tight. It shows. We need someone who will inject some fun into this team.

Speaking of which, I hope they focus on not only signing the right players (stats wise) but the right players for the locker room. Guys like Donaldson and Hicks are locker room cancer. Rizzo, Bader and DJ bring great energy to the team and have the guts to make big plays when they are needed.

Cashman inherited greatness from Gene Michael and Bob Watson who put together the Jeter Mariano dynasty. Now it's this 100% wedded to analytics/launch angles with no player development at the major league level.

They either should've gone with the kids infield this year or signed the big time free agents, instead Cashman brought in IKF and Donaldson. Bader is the one good move he made I can think of. If they keep Cashman and give Judge the 10 year record money challenging contract he's looking for they'll be doomed for a long time. He's an amazing regular season player but you're going to have everything tied up in a 31 year old injury prone player who stinks in the playoffs.

Boone is horrible but the biggest problem with this team is Cashman and the brain trust, if they're not gone they'll continue falling short and seeing players stagnate or regress at the big league level.

Bring in a real GM, someone like the guy in Tampa who always does more with way less. Get rid of Donaldson, IKF, Hicks, Torres, Chapman, Britton etc. Build it around the young guys you have and let the new GM trade and sign what they need.

Do I expect any of what I posted to happen, no because Hal is the baseball version of James Dolan.

I agree...they need a teardown. They are stuck with Stanton and Cole's contracts, they cant add Judge to that list unless he agrees to the original 7 year deal.

And seriously...how much money does the guy need? I just don't get it when guys who make 100s of millions of dollars, will leave a great situation just because they want an extra $100mm. What will be different in his life if his contract goes from $320mm to $400mm? Or is all the "lucky to be a Yankee" talk all bs? And when Judge is interviewed he talks about wanting to stay a Yankee but it's in his agents and the yankee's hands. What a load of crap.

People give Cashman a ton of crap for bringing in Donaldson, because Donaldson sucks. And he deserves crap for that.

But we cannot forget that he gave up Urshela ($6.5 million & under team control) to get Donaldson ($25 million). Gio hit .280 this season with half the strikeouts of Donaldson and only 1 less home run than Donaldson. That’s the real crime IMO. We could have used more hitters like Gio.

This was an awesome listen. Everything Kay and La Greca said is spot on. I've never heard Michael Kay like this...

As far as I am concerned, saying or doing something unconscionable, at an inappropriate time is in and of itself a fireable offense.

Cashman claiming that we would have won it all in 2017 and 2019 if Houston had not cheated was a fireable offense.

Boone stating that the open roof 'killed us' was a fireable offense.

Whoever the genius was who thought reliving 2004 would somehow turn this team into one capable of taking four straight from Houston was a fireable offense.
