They are trying to extend Barmore and probably Judon. Post draft, there will be more trades and FA signings. I still think they may bring Gillmore back. FA essentially goes on hold as the draft gets closer.Very strange, given how bad the roster is, the Patriots are just sitting in $53 million in cap space.
Patriots have now met with each of the top 4 projected QBs. I think that's the correct move. Need to be fully informed for what may be a wild draft.
I have gone back and forth on these four guys. My general sense, in order of preference is:
1. Drake Maye. Most upside. Probably also the lowest floor if he doesn't fix some of this issues and learn how to play in an NFL style system throwing on timing. Have to hope he makes a leap, but if he does, you're set.
2. JJ McCarthy. Pats fans seem down on him, but most are ignorant of college football. All the physical tools, very athletic, can play in an NFL timing system and has good mechanics. Great throwing on the move (like Steve Young was).
3. Jayden Daniels. Fast, great and dangerous runner, really good outside thrower on deep fades and curls. Improved a lot, ceiling is lower due to mediocre arm and questionable frame. Have to build a unique offense around him and load it with outside receiving threats. Very poor fit in New England.
4. Michael Penix. Best deep ball throwing in the class. Better mobility than expected post injury. Very good arm, throws out of the pocket. Can be rattled by pressure and loses composure. Best on a solid team with good weapons around him. Older, injury risk. High floor.
Of course. I know he's not falling to #3. These are the guys the Pats could land. I didn't include Nix or Rattler, but they'd be 5-6 in some order.I assume your list has Caleb already off the board?
Maybe they'll surprise but I have less faith in this crew than I do Craig Breslow. Instead of taking a top QB, I think they are going to trade down and end up with a stiff.Very strange, given how bad the roster is, the Patriots are just sitting in $53 million in cap space.
The Pats did the right thing, now they have a plan.
There's no guarantees in this. My hope lies mostly in Alex Van Pelt and McCartney. Van Pelt was Aaron Rodger's QB coach. He played QB in the NFL for a decade. I think so. Zach Wilson's problems are largely mental. Maye has footwork issues stemming from that crap Air Raid system at UNC. So can they fix that?Very curious to see how this plays out. For the record, i think it’s the right pick for them.
That said. As a Jets fan who’s lived in this new coach, new OC, new young QB cycle with lather rinse repeat over and over? I can’t wait to see how this goes.

I agree, the making the right pick is just the start. But I was afraid they were going to try and get cute.Very curious to see how this plays out. For the record, i think it’s the right pick for them.

Gase had less of a track record and never played the position. Maye may not be it, but I feel pretty good about the situation. Even more so because he's probably not a day 1 starter. He can learn from Brissett.Again. I know sucking is a new feeling. What you said about Van Pelt? They said the same about Adam Gase with Peyton Manning.
Now this is a great start. Thankful the Commanders gifted him to us.
i am not so sure it was the right pick. Of course..being a Jets fan, I have qb PTSD…lol.Very curious to see how this plays out. For the record, i think it’s the right pick for them.

Moved up from 5 to 4th. Trade value chart had them slightly ahead. What else did the Pats get for trading back 3 slots?
"Well, I think that's certainly a top need for them. It's quarterback, tackle and wide receiver, so this is one of the top needs. Drake compares himself a lot to Josh Allen, he's been doing that for quite a while. We'll see about that. I think there are some similarities, size and athleticism, but Josh Allen's a pretty special player now
"A very talented kid. Good size, runs well, has a good arm. He just hasn't played very much. He really doesn't have a lot of experience. He makes some big plays ... He's going to need some work in reading defenses, reading coverages."
"Drake Maye, his footwork needs a lot of work. Here, he's all over the place. Never resets his feet. Never really gets in position to throw. Gets strip-sacked. Too much hopping around. Step up and throw.
He sounded luke warm on every QB in the draft. He doesn't think rookie QBs are ready. Pointed out huge issues with Caleb Williams too. We know about Maye's issues. The footwork is terrible, as it is with most "air raid" QBs. JT O'Sullivan has a good video going over every QB and points out that air raid coaches don't teach 3 step 5 step drops and throws on time. So he's not been coached to do it (McCarthy is the only guy among the top guys who's good at that right now).Belichick sounded "luke warm" on Maye.....
They look very good on D. Barmore blood clots are a concern. The new rookie receivers look pretty good and Pop looks great. LT is a real concern. Guard play has been good, Sow settling in at LG. I'll stick with my prediction of around 6-8 wins.Is @HuskyHawk ok? We are into August, a preseason game down, and nothing from him on how great the Pats are gonna be this year?
You should go to FanDuel and take them over 7.5 wins at +630.They look very good on D. Barmore blood clots are a concern. The new rookie receivers look pretty good and Pop looks great. The preseason game vs Philly should tell us more. Hard to get much from the Panthers game. Neither team played starters much.
He’s hasn’t. One moronic, truly stupid local media guy said that. It’s very far from reality. No comments from @HuskyHawk on Milton outplaying Maye so far? About Milton being the new TB????
I love this. I am 57, I grew up in CT and didn't have a single friend who was a Pats fan in grade school. Enter the Brady era and now Pats Nation feels like it's a walk in the park finding a generational QB. New coach, tough division, unknowns at QB, below average talent at offensive skill positions.
Best of luck to you this season.
Good luck. I didn’t bother with the over 4.5 because it’s the lowest odds W/L bet in the whole NFL.You should go to FanDuel and take them over 7.5 wins at +630.
I took them under 4.5 wins and to have the worst record in the NFL at +400
It was a conditional 3rd rounder that would end up being a 6th if he doesn't play. He’s hasn’t. One moronic, truly stupid local media guy said that. It’s very far from reality.
Any comments on trading fir guys who won’t play for your team?
It's not fatal, but without him the depth is going to be tested. I happen to think the Jets have the best roster in the AFC East, but that window is small, because I just don't think Rogers is going to be like Brady past age 42 or so and there's no young QB on the roster aside from Travis. So missing a top tier DE is not a good thing. It was a conditional 3rd rounder that would end up being a 6th if he doesn't play.
He's over a barrel. Sitting out a year at his position at age 29 is not a good idea and the Jets don't need him to make or break their season.
