What Dabo had to say about Bowman transferring...

“Oh, yeah — yeah, didn’t expect that,” Swinney said of Bowman’s decision to transfer. “But yeah, it’s 2020. There’s a lot of things that’ll catch you off guard in 2020. I tried to talk him out of it, but it’s just what he wanted to do and it’s really easy to do that — and it’s going to get easier with the transfer portal and those types of things. It’ll get easier and easier for guys to just pack up and go, so it’s the world we’re living in. But he’s a great kid, again. Certainly no hard feelings or anything like that. But at the end of the day, you’ve got just keep moving forward.”

The revised transfer process is so new that nobody understands what the outcome will be. That said, we know a couple of things.

In general, bringing in a ton of transfers is high risk and the culture a coach is trying to build could be destroyed.

In college basketball, the best NBA prospects are usually freshmen and some sophomores. You really don't see many kids who transfer become NBA draft picks.

There are way more kids in the transfer portal than potentially available scholarships at their current level of competition.

The majority of football transfers are down a level, not up or lateral.

In football, schools can only bring in 25 new scholarship players per year. Bringing in lots of transfers or JUCOs can negatively impact the ability to maintain a roster of 85 players. (Go read about the roster problems at Kansas.)

There are 22 starters on offense and defense in football with 85 scholarship players. In basketball, there are 5 starters with 13 scholarship players. Just because you transfer, it doesn't mean you are going to be a starter. Most likely, the coach is recruiting the player for depth.
