As we know it might take 7 days to finalize the new ruler of our realm, so it seems appropriate to have a game to get us through this week of uncertainty.

James Bond Challenge - 7 movies and 7 drinks.

  • Dr. No (1962) Vodka martinis
  • From Russian With Love (1963) Vodka martinis
  • Goldfinger (1964) Bourbon and water
  • Thunderball (1965) Scotch
  • You Only Live Twice (1967) Bourbon
  • Diamonds Are Forever (1971) Vodka martinis
  • Never Say Never Again (1983) Scotch
Totally open to brands of alcohol. It's up to each BYer to decide repeats or a new brand each time.

I will go with Grey Goouse for my Vodka, totally open for suggestions on Bourbon and Scotch.

May the last man/woman standing claim victory. Suggestions welcome.

Only one drink per movie? What if I want more? Am I hamstrung to participate? Do I have to participate every day?

This inquiring mind wants to know!! :D

For bond, it was "shaken, not stirred". But according to the "mixology" experts, any coctail made of only spirits (no mixers, juices etc) like a martini shoud be stirred not shaken. That's why he had to specify. Such a rebel, that 007.

Shaking the drink breaks down the ice and waters down the alcohol. So, basically, he was weakening his martinis and diluting what was probably the top of the top shelf in some Monte Carlo casino.

The martini was traditionally gin at the time too.

It still is, no?

I mean, you can order a vodka martini, but that‘s a different drink.

From what I know, the gin martini is the "classic" martini. Vodka is the arguably the most popular liquor in the world so I think it's just a way to, well....sell more vodka. When I was bartending, an older guy ordered an extra dry Ketel One martini. When I picked up the vermouth, he said "No, no, no....I don't want any of that "stuff" in there". When I pointed out that would just be a glass of vodka, he said "I'd like an extra dry Ketel One martini" and smiled.

Yes, early on I was trained by a couple old-timers that “extra dry” meant to pass the shadow of the vermouth bottle by the shaker.

I bartended a decade ago. If someone ordered a martini and you gave them gin, they'd look at you sideways. And this was in a 40's to 60's age group establishment.

Vermouth is no longer a thing either.

In this pic from Dr No he's using Smirnoff.

When I bartended at a country club, we had a regular who joked that he liked his martinis "extra dry - just garlgle with the vermouth and breathe on the ice"

According to this link, across 12 books and 2 short story collections, Fleming only once mentioned a brand of vodka.
"The brand was Wolfschmidt, which 007 orders in M’s club while dining together prior to playing Hugo Drax at bridge during Moonraker; on this occasion Bond sprinkles black pepper on the surface of his drink, a habit he picked up in Moscow."

The shaken thing works only for a triple. But if u shake the hell out of it, it does get cold in a hurry.
