In an article about the head coach of the University of Charleston's women's bball team, SherryWinn, leaving her position, there was a one-line paragraph that gave me pause.

Winn also served as the athletic department's compliance director.

Really? I imagine the football coach (yes, there is a football team) loves having his recruiting scrutinized by the women's basketball coach. It seems a very odd arrangement.

BTW, the Univ. of Charleston is a Div II school that does offer scholarships and is required to follow NCAA Div II recruiting rules.

Sometimes you wear many hats at the smaller schools. At another Charleston, Charleston Southern in SC, one person IS the ticket department.

Well, yes, that's true. But I don't understand putting a coach in charge of compliance when there's an Athletic Director in residence.

Some folks believe in industry and other forms of self-regulation. Especially on Independence Day, I believe that the Founding Fathers' and Mothers' concept of checks and balances was the proper and necessary approach.

I would say that's "odd", but don't want to start anything.

I also think it's strange that some colleges still use the honor system for students, but some elite small colleges still do.
