The fouls keep piling up for Samson Johnson. “It’s dumbfounding.”

Keep playing hard and keep repeating "I am not going to foul". Will it into reality SJ, everybody is rooting for you.

Fouls phase 2, "I will inevitably foul, it's part of the game"="Acceptance leads to disappearance"

Zen Jedi mind control Fouling pamphlet I found.

I am genuinely curious how he does in practice with the fouling? Is it just the adrenaline of a real game situation that causes SJ to commit the dumb fouls?

Feels like beating a dead horse, but he’s clearly made big strides in his offensive bag this year. He’s got more post moves and looks immeasurably more comfortable when he gets the ball in a post up situation. But if he can’t figure this part out, he’s headed for a similar role again this year. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I’d rather not have playing time at the five dictated by foul trouble.

If I recall correctly, didn't the same sort of fouling issue plague Clingan last year before the lights came on?

You recall incorrectly. Only issue DC had at beginning of last year was getting in to game shape after a few nagging injuries. A healthy, conditioned DC did just fine managing his fouls.

I think both Reed and Johnson had cheap reach ins the other day. We have guards that can reach in to steal the ball. Hurley should tell them both to wall up and never reach in. That will save them each 1 foul per game.

They don't call fouls in practice in order to simulate tough Big East play. Which I'm fine with. I'm among his biggest fanboys on here- he's got to figure it out, or he won't get a chance to help the team the way he can. His passing can be real important. He's gonna get moving screen calls because he's so slight, and fouls on the high hedge as he's so explosive. Even that third foul, he tried to pull the principle of verticality thing on the block but he really hasn't harnessed his body yet on the court. But has to let that one go with 2 fouls in first half and eliminate the reach ins. He opens up the floor soooo much on offense

Not quite as bad as I thought but his minutes were limited by a fouls especially as the competition ramped up. Texas 3 fouls in 12 minutes, UNC 4 fouls in 20 minutes, Seton Hall 3 fouls in 14 minutes, PC, 4 in 15, SJU 4 in 16, the last two were back to back. After that he was pretty good.

He's made some very nice passes too. A great weapon when available. He's had four years but I hope there is still time for him to figure this aspect of the game out.
I think it’s more frustrating to me because he does so many smart things. He’s not just some big goof. He’s threaded the needle with some passes that show a level of BBIQ that makes it all the more frustrating when he’s reaching in 25 feet from the hoop.

Going in to this season, Johnson had 130 fouls and 129 rebounds.

His offense is coming along a bit, but as I've said for 12 months, he's just not an instinctive player. You can't fix that in a few years.

His defense and rebounding will not be what we need from a starting center.

All Big East would require grabbing lots of rebounds. That's never going to happen.
Weve never seen his production at 20-25 min because of the foul trouble, I'm sure we would all be happy with whatever he produced. He is always the best athlete on the floor , have that for 20-25 min would be game changing imo.

I think the center position will be a strength this year like the last two years..you can tell SJ has been working on his game..he seems a lot more skilled this year..he just needs to cut down on his fouls.. and I think he will..Reed is big athletic and skilled.. he was in a dumpster fire last year..this year he is getting proper coaching.. he’s going to be really good

I have definitely been a Samson Johnson supporter for years now. I marvel at his size and athleticism but I have to agree he just doesn't possess the discipline to not commit silly fouls. He should be DOMINATING the opponents like Sacred Heart and New Hampshire not fouling out. I have to believe that the coaching staff has been working with him but jeez he is a walking foul. It's a shame too considering 6'10" guys that can jump out of the building don't grow on trees but at this point, I don't know what else Hurley and staff can do to correct it.

I hope so. I just don’t see it as a strength compared to the last two seasons. But we’re not playing against UConn 23 and 24 teams.

The sooner we just get over the difficult conversations with Hass and Sam and put them back in their natural habitat dominating the second unit, the sooner this team will reach its potential. Give them the same minutes, but better rotation construction and chance of success with them coming in to battle/dominate the backups.

My boiling hot, Mt. Doom temperature take is that our team would be at its absolute peak if Ahmad Nowell starts getting 20+ mpg right now, and I'm not sure what Mahaney brings that others can't provide? I don't think that's realistic so will not project it below but probably the biggest risk/reward right now.

My Lineups from the first 3 games:
G - Solo - 30 min
G - JRoss 20 min
F - McNeeley - 30 min
F - Karaban - 30 min
C - Tarris - 25 min

First G - Hass or Mahaney or Ahmad depending on matchup (need defense/distributing or a scoring or stone cold killer?)
First W - Jaylin OR Abraham depending on matchup (need rebounding/scoring or 3&D help?)
First P - Samson

SJ is going to foul and get "baited" into fouling by opponents who have scouted us. What would be an improvement is if the fouls he committed were "smart" fouls. Not wasted fouls/silly fouls so that he could stay on the floor as long as Danny sees his value to do so. He is forcing Dan to put him on the bench too early in games. Eventually Reed will begin to grab more PT if this continues to happen.

On a more positive note- He seems to be much more comfortable with the ball in his hands on offense-both to put it on the floor and to pass-facilitate- than in previous years. His post moves seem to have improved from last year as well. This is his last year in Storrs-Gotta make it happen and figure it out.
