Once the B1G and Sec split? Absolutely.
If and when the SEC/B1G split from everyone else, everyone else will need a fun and engaging model to keep eyeballs. 40 team playoff would be one way to differentiate. Inclusive, not exclusive, etc.

Start by convincing 6 schools to drop from the FBS to FCS, leaving 128 FBS schools
Put all the names in a hat. Pull 3 names. The first 2 play each other. Then the 3rd name hosts the game. Example: Utah State vs Clemson at San Diego State continue 63 more times
12/6ish 64 games played - Random draw, you might get Michigan vs Alabama or you might get Ohio State vs Louisiana Monroe
12/13ish The 64 winning schools go through the same random draw iteration playing 32 games at random locations picked from the original 128
12/20ish The 32 winning schools go through the same random draw iteration playing 16 games at random locations picked from the original 128
12/27ish The 16 winning schools go through the same random draw iteration playing 8 games at current Bowl locations with no local ties
1/3ish The 8 winning schools go through the same random draw iteration playing 4 games at current Bowl locations with no local ties
1/10ish The last 4 schools standing random draw and play at rotating major market cities with no local ties
1/17ish NC game at rotating Bowl City
From somewhere around Christmas, you should see the 32 decent to good teams (wild upsets will no doubt occur) duke it out.

Do we really need to watch the 5th place SEC team or the 5th place B1G team. Didn't we just see that these mid table P4 teams get blown out?
You can justify the top 3 P2 teams as having a shot most years. You can justify the top 1 or 2 in the other P4 most but not all years. Same with the line G5 team, some but clearly not all and only in the opening rounds. Wake me up if a G5 makes the semis.
8 is the correct number, they know it but the money and protecting the P2 bids made them go to 12. The extra games are the reason for 16 but that will end up killing the playoff with meaningless opening round games, more injuries, and fewer NFL hopefuls playing as soon as a top 5 projected pick gets hurt playing Missouri in the opening round.

I like a 16 team playoff with autobids for all conferences and the rest at large.
Why are we pretending that the Sun Belt is a part of the FBS if they're not allowed to play? Have it one way or the other.

So in this nutso proposal, instead of having a 16 team bracket where 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15, etc., you have:
Week 1:
13 vs 16
14 vs 15
Week 2:
3 vs lowest winning seed
4 vs second lowest winning seed
5 vs 12
6 vs 11
7 vs 10
8 vs 9
This means the 1 and 2 seeds (presumably the SEC and Big Ten champs) get double byes into Week 3.
This is the stupidest approach to a 16 team tournament I have ever seen.
