The Boneyard Greatest TV Show of All-Time Tournament

I have over 300 different TV shows on DVD. My first criterion is do I re-watch with some regularity.

I can't remember the exact order of my initial selections, but in order my first 3 were West Wing, The Wire, and Dead Like Me. The rest of my top ten are: The Americans, Foyle's War, Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad, Cheers, Band of Brothers, and NYPD Blue.

Since it was an option, I posted an additional ten. Grimm topped that list having just missed the first list. Among the others are: Smash, The Bridge, Lonesome Dove, Fargo, Game of Thrones, Life, Last Kingdom, and Tinker Tailor.

I will enter no more lists, but several other series I hold in high regard are: The Dresden Files, Alias, Homicide, The Border, China Beach, Deadwood, Lie to Me, X Files, Eli Stone, and Winds of War.

Oh yeah. Foyles’s War! Amazing show. David Tenant era Dr. Who was superb. Horatio Hornblower was another I forgot.

Combat
All in the Family
Big Bang Theory
Everyone Loves Raymond
The Honeymooners
Foyle's War
Blacklist
Intelligence
Sanford&Son
Cheers
Two and a Half Men
Blue Bloods
Persons of Interest
Hell on Wheels
Turn
NYPD Blues

That run of seasons it had is unmatched. Part of me doesn’t want to include the series as a whole on account of the collective mediocrity of the rest of the seasons. It will still probably make in my Top 10 comfortably though.
It’s okay to include it IMO just because of the cultural impact it had during the 90’s. The writing was out of this world, the jokes were witty yet simple enough that even dumb brains could get something out of it. Had it all. What we see today is almost unrecognizable. If it had stopped after season 9 or 10 it’d be the undisputed champ.

Well there was like 3 channels back then so I don’t blame people from liking what was on but how people can tune into these CBS comedies when there is so much content that’s actually funny is beyond me.

I’m starting to like it more than breaking bad
I liked the interplay with Chuck a lot but c'mon. The stakes and pacing are just not in same stratosphere as BB, even the cinematography and other excellent work loses its power without the gravitas of constant stakes upping that BB spun in and out of. That show was just a once in a lifetime deal. Saul isn't Joanie Loves Chachi but its Mork at best.

SOAP is a show that I missed and has lost its place in the pantheon. It was so funny and way ahead of its time and speaking of spinoffs I bet people remember 'Benson' more (or if not Robert Guillaume on 'Sportsnight' or more horribly Katherine Helmond 1/50th as funny on the dreadful 'Who's the Boss').

I swear to god if The Wire doesn't win I'll burn the Boneyard to the ground.

There are a lot of great shows that deserve to be on this list (The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Arrested Development, Mad Men, Breaking Bad), and those should be in the mix with other classics, recent and old, that I didn't list. But if The Wire gets Casablanca'd?

Simpsons season 3-8 is the greatest tv show of all time. The Zombie Simpson episodes they put out now is a damn shame.
If we could restrict it to this, this is the correct answer.

We cannot. it should be a Final Four show, but The Wire.

If you have not seen Fawlty towers you are missing out big time. Just twenty episodes but some of the best comedy this world has ever known, go seek it out.

I entered Fawlty towers, curb your enthusiasm, seinfeld, Futurama, king of the hill, Sherlock (UK), bobs burgers, Daria, hey Arnold and breaking bad.

Malcom in the middle, wonder years, Chappelle show, skins (UK),Doug and Pete & pete could all easily be up there too but miss out and are more top 25.

Simpsons has been hurt by nearly twenty years of poor episodes and redundancy...yawn.

Couldn't agree more on Fawlty Towers and the Wonder Years. Both would have made my list if I thought of them.

Game of Thrones
Breaking Bad
Law & Order
Scrubs
Arrested Development
I Love Lucy
How I Met Your Mother
Parks & Rec
And a couple of personal favs that don’t have the following to make the cut but were consistently great: Fringe & Psych
