How in the world is GF2 losing to Rocky? -- The ultimate underdog. Always.

How in the world is GF2 seeded lower than GF1. Its a better movie. -- Solid point.

I love Rocky. A lot. Probably not as much as you though.

GF2 is arguably the best movie ever made. EVER.

The first is a good question.

The Godfather has a higher cumulative ranking and thus seeding according to everyone’s individual ranking submissions.

GF2 probably suffers from having come after the OG GF, which absorbs some of the love that would otherwise be directed to GF2. Kind of like how The Empire Strikes Back is a better movie than the OG Star Wars, but the latter would probably win most popular contests based on its primacy.

Its not that complicated, The Godfather gets to represent itself and II and III both for the nominating committee and somewhat general perception. Having them in this particular poll within the same vote somewhat mitigates that, but generally if you are naming favorite movies its duplicative and not interesting to list both Godfathers.
Rocky is more nuanced in that the franchise definitely lowers the quality, credibility and love for the original. In a world with no Rocky sequels, the original movie is revered - probably more than Shawshank. Nonetheless, GII is a better movie, everything is essential, acting superb whereas Rocky is kinda great for how unpolished it is.

Of course both Goodfellas and Animal House are dated - they are old movies. Nonetheless, I don't think we need to litigate the sexual scenes in a comedy vs a mob movie. To me that vote comes down to the classic nature of each. The Godfather I & II are head and shoulders groundbreaking films setting up for Goodfellas & its red-headed cousin Casino. Likewise Animal House is a groundbreaking, standard bearing comedy that defines college frat life just as the Godfather defines mob-life. And it is nearly flawless, whereas when I re-watch Goodfellas I always find the last 20 minutes to be a separate movie hastily tacked on.

On Rocky v GF2, funny thing is when Rocky came out, I thought it was overblown hoke. But it's grown on me over time, particularly the parts pre-fight, even though I don't care for its sequels. OTOH, GF2, which I initially loved, has become a film I simply no longer unequivocally enjoy, and IMO that's because of all the screen time Pacino has compared to the secondary (and again, IMO) more interesting characters. Sometime in the past decade or so, I started finding Pacino boring in this role, whereas I appreciate the Duvall, Strasberg and other performances much more.

Nah. Not for the first one. That was a movie with plot, character development, and all that. The ones that followed were cartoons. Actually, the fighting in the first one was the most comically bad part of the film.
By comically bad I assume you can only mean incredibly awesome! ;)

(Actually the "realism" of the boxing scenes were praised back when it was released.)

Roadhouse was just plain stupid, much like anything Patrick Swayze has ever been in (and I say that as someone who's long had Red Dawn as a guilty pleasure.

And the boxing in Rocky showcased pathetically bad footwork, plus indicated Creed must've punched like a fairyboy since he only landed blows on Rocky's face about 937 times without knocking him out. You really don't see (m)any successful boxers lead with their face.

In a field where Caddyshack made the Sweet 16, this is what you complain about? Or one where Animal House is still alive? And Die Hard?

GF2 may be the best movie left on that list (it's debatable), but Rocky is probably 2nd, or no worse than 3rd.

We are working from a field of 64 that was not exactly well chosen. The acting in both the first two Godfather movies is superb. But the pacing is a little slow. DeNiro does shine as young Vito.

I'm curious HH, what was your Top 16?

If limited to the original 64, my top 16 (unranked) would probably be (I spent all of 30 seconds on the list):
1) The Shawshank Redemption (390pts)
2) Goodfellas (298pts)
3) The Godfather (270pts)
5) Rocky (155pts)
7) Jaws (140pts)
8) Casablanca (138pts)
13) The Godfather: Part II (118pts)
19) The Departed (101pts)
20) Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (98pts)
22) Raiders of the Lost Ark (88pts)
24) The Wizard of Oz (82pts)
25) Unforgiven (79pts)
27) One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (76pts)
35) The Great Escape (61pts)
36) Monty Python and the Holy Grail (61pts)
53) Good Will Hunting (48pts)

There are a ton of movies that wouldn't have been in my top 64.
