Sad to see the Princess bride Cinderella run end and a very hard choice between Rocky and Godfather 2 but I have to give the nod to Rocky.

Btw didn't Hoosiers have a regular season matchup with Rocky? Who won that?

All chalk.
Agreed. Although I can see some people not wanting to vote in 2 Godfathers pushing themselves towards Rocky.

As an aside, it’s been years since I’ve seen all the Rocky’s. I think back to them and all I can picture really is melodramatic cheese.

I went with Rocky and Animal House. Tough call on both but for me it came down to the iconic and genre-setting value of each over their respective competitors, which are each great but less valuable in that regard imo as compared with the OG Godfather.

Pretty clear it’s going to come down to Shawshank vs. Godfather in the finals.

Yea, I think we all could’ve probably called that one. I bet Goodfellas gives it a run for its money tho. Something about the demos on here make me think it has a chance.

Really to watch the Rockies you need a few minutes of character identification and then skip to the final fight.

I will say that overall Rocky Balboa and Creed are better movies. Haven't gotten around to Creed 2 yet.

You need to separate the original Rocky from all other Rockys. Won the Oscar for Best Picture.

You can get to Rocky II and make a split between them and the rest.

You needed the sequel to complete Rocky's storylines.

Rocky III on out is a pure commercial money making franchise.

I don't think anyone with power in Hollywood greenlighted Rocky or Rocky II because they though they were surefire commercial successes.

In an epic twist, I actually haven't seen 2 of these movies.

Nah. Not for the first one. That was a movie with plot, character development, and all that. The ones that followed were cartoons. Actually, the fighting in the first one was the most comically bad part of the film.

Shows how little CL knows about movies. If you lopped off the training montages in Rocky IV, you'd have left some of the finest cinematic sequences in history on the cutting room floor.

Can't believe all the Rocky hate here. Ya'll probably didn't like Road House either. How that didn't win Best Picture we'll never know.

Goodfella's hasn't aged very well in my opinion. I thought it was brilliant at the time, but it feels dated. It doesn't work as well as it once did.

I went with Animal House and Rocky, as @8893 did. Hoping for a Rocky vs Shawshank final.

Tells you more about Oscars and awards voting than anything else. The other Best Picture nominees were All the President's Men, Bound for Glory, Network, and Taxi Driver. All were arguably better films than Rocky, but vote-splitting likely secured the winner one year before the sea change to blockbusterdom solidified the change forever after.
Compare Avildsen's filmography with that of Pakula, Ashby, Lumet, and Scorcese, and it's easy to see that emotions got tapped at a time when the need for good news and modest heroes was ascending in an insecure time. But Best Picture?

Goodfellas aged worse than Animal House? Hahahaha.

All one needs to disprove that is to cite the increasingly larger number of instances where some BYer quotes, "... when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor..." and some other BYer corrects them to say it was, indeed, the Japanese.

I guess there's some semblance to vote-splitting, but Rocky was also heralded across the board.

Rocky - 10 nominations including picture, director, actor, actress and 2 for supporting actor with 3 wins.
All the Presidents Men - 8 nominations including picture, director, supporting actor and actress with 2 wins.
Bound for Glory - 6 nominations including picture with 2 wins.
Network - 10 nominations including picture, director, actor twice, actress and supporting actor/actress. 4 wins in total.
Taxi Driver - 4 nominations including picture, actor, actress and 0 wins.

Safe to say, if Network wasn't in the bunch, Rocky would have brought home a truckload that year. It's held up better than those 4 over time, for sure.
