Please stop with the UMass. Making them more than a MAC team would be a mistake an hurt UConn in the long run.

Memphis, Tulsa, UCF, Houston, SMU, USF, Cinci, UConn, Temple and ECU. No Tulane and NO UMass

P.S. I don't like this crap sandwich but it is the best it can do right now.

It's a pretty bad basketball conference - UConn and Cincy are something, Temple's marginal, Memphis is toast and the rest are God-awful. And as a football conference, it will make our eyeballs bleed.

I'm gonna head to a bar with Coach K - over beers, he can tell me about how he will miss playing Maryland twice a year and I can tell him about how I miss playing Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Miami, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech, Villanova, Providence, Georgetown, St. John's, DePaul, Seton Hall, Notre Dame and Marquette.

Save yourself the airfare down to Tobacco Rd; if you're correct in your guess that Connecticut has no shot at the B1G-time, then we'll be in the same league with Duke, Wake, Cuse, Pitt and Lsvl soon enough. you can buy that hypocrite a beer at Teds when Duke visits Gampel...that league will offer good Basketball but football will still struggle for mediocracy, though it could develop into a viable contender to the Mtn West for the #5 slot....
 
No to Stony Brook - they're a flight risk.

The Seawolves are an AAU school, so of course a couple seasons of Big East success and they'll be off to the B1G in a heartbeat...

I'm not opining on whether I agree with your statement about UMass. It is a common belief here. I do, however, find it ironic that we UConn fans despise BC for doing the same exact thing. If most here believe that BC was dumb to keep UConn out because it would've given them a local rival, then why would we want to stop UMass?
 
given where this is all heading or not heading, are we at a point where it might just make sense to throw in the towel on BE4.0 and UConn, USF and Cincy just agree to play in CUSA? Temple could either come along too.

UMass just moved to BCS and the MAC. UConn took a few years before they landed in the conference they were already in. UMass brings what to the NBE. Okay basketball, sub par football and average at best at everything else but hockey which is not NBE.
 
It doesn't matter whether we want Tulsa and UMass or not. That is the rumor. Hope its true or hope its false, but don't shoot the messenger.

uconnbill, I don't disagree with your analysis. I don't think UMass "deserves" a better conference. They are in a conference that has solid basketball, but they've been crap since Calipari left. They can't blame their lack of success on their conference. Also, from what I know (not living in New England), the state of MA has never really supported the school (athletically, academically, infrastructure). That doesn't bode well for future success.

I was only pointing out the irony (or hypocrisy) of those that claim that admitting UMass would hurt UConn because it will allow them to get better, take our recruits, or whatever. It's the same thing BC said about us. You can also find the same attitude on the Syracuse, Rutgers and Pitt board regarding us (now that they are in better conferences). I guess the difference is that BC was caught saying it an institutional, not just fan, level.

UConn shouldn't oppose UMass because they are a "threat", they should oppose UMass because its an academic hole with no fanbase or market.

Southern Miss and Tulsa are far, far better choices.

This would be a pretty good Big East conference, probably 6th in football and perhaps 3rd in basketball in a good year.

As unpalatable as associating with what's left over of a diminished acc is, please get off our storm damaged NNNBE island. Enabling the mess in amherst and more regional and broader recruiting competition is distasteful at best, but tiny, private school Tulsa's attraction is even more perplexing than another state's 3rd wheel, Southern Miss. :eek:

With only 3,000 students, a resulting small alumni base, similarly small football attendance (maybe 20K in good years), minimal gridiron bowl tradition, equally limited hoops' tourney record, etc., it's shockingly revolting to think of associating with the Golden Hurricanes on top of Memphis, ECU, Tulane, USF, UCF, and Cinci. Not that academics matter at this stage, but at least UCF's a huge, expanding school (50,000), well located (guarantees an annual home game for UConn's FL recruits and sizable alumni base in the Sunshine state), etc. New Orleans and Memphis offer some away game travel attractions, but Tulsa, Hattiesburg, Greenville ... how soon can Herbst and Manuel extricate us from NNNBE?
 
We need another school up north to balance out the new Big East. Preferably a good basketball school with a growing football program just to make an all sports conference a little more palatable for the basketball crowd. Now who fits that bill that's not already in the B1g or the ACC? Kent St? Natural rival for Cincy. Made it to the quarterfinals in the NIT in 2011. Went 11-3 last year in football(albeit in the MAAC). Beat #15 Rutgers. Lost to #21 N. Illinois by a touchdown in double overtime. Lost by 4 points in their bowl game.

The best choice for a northern school is Army, but not sure they would accept. If Army doesn't accept, place USF in the North to keep the old BE schools together and select another southern school. For me, UMass is a non-starter. Why? It has nothing to do with competition as I have no problem playing UMass in football or basketball on occasion, but they have little fan support, no football stadium of reasonable size near campus, and poor athletics so they really don't bring much to the party. If in 5 years, they show major improvement in support and performance, then I would reevaluate, but based on current evidence, the answer is no. UMass is not UConn 10 years ago.
 
Having both Army & Navy in the New Big East would be appealing but:
  • What about basketball? Could they attract the next Bobby Knight or Mike Krzyzewski to make the program competitive?
  • With the economy and the current administration is there going to be money to upgrade facilities in the military academies so that they can attract a higher caliber athlete?
  • The one thing the service academies have going for them is a built in home crowd. But what about TV? What do they add to market share in sports other than football? Is there room for growth or is it what it's going to be?
