There is already lobbying going on for Alabama being "the best 3-loss team in the country". The SEC is a great football conference, but at some point, they have to be allowed to be punished when their teams don't perform well...
You know, UConn was included in the Athletic’s end of the season round up. They said we finished 8-4 best record since the Fiesta Bowl. It did not say but they didn’t beat any “good” teams. It did mention the trophy controversy! LOL

Fox Sports just revealed UConn ranking.
59. Connecticut Huskies

Record: 8-4
Conference: Independent
Original 134 Ranking: 107

Jim Mora has quietly pulled off one of the more impressive returns to relevance in the sport. After 12 consecutive losing seasons, the Huskies will finish with their first winning season since 2010 (8-5).

Only one of their losses this season was a blowout — 50-7 against Maryland — while the others were by seven points or fewer to P4 foes Wake Forest, Duke and Syracuse.

Here you go:

19. UConn (8-4) reached eight wins for the first time since 2010 with a 47-42 win at UMass (2-10). Then came a bizarre subplot. A UMass collective recently announced the creation of a new trophy for the rivalry, the Southwick Jug, but that collective, Midnight Ride, is no longer recognized by the university. UConn coach Jim Mora tweeted after the game that “I specifically asked for the trophy at the end of the game and was told point blank you folks weren’t giving it up.”

UConn racks up all sorts of hardware in basketball. Why won’t anyone let it have one lousy football trophy?

So for all of you who don’t think wins are the most important thing…

GM fans! Here is the last regular season CFB ranking from the Athletic. UConn moves up 7 spots to #65, and breaks into the top 3 of their opponents group for the first time, and it's the first time this season that UConn moves above Maryland. Call me crazy, and yes, strength of schedule, P5 and all that, and two of their last four games were vs #1 Oregon and #4 Penn State, however they ended the season on a 5 game losing streak.

UConn, Buffalo, and Syracuse had the biggest improvement from preseason to week 14. FAU, Maryland, and Rice had the least.

Uconn had a fine season but In no world, in any way shape or form is Uconn ahead of Maryland or remotely close, that's just silly as shown on the field.

That game was honestly inexplicable. For whatever reason UConn was not ready to play. One of the few times in the Mora era. It looked like Edsall 2 had prepped them. Georgia State last year was the other time I thought that. If we were to play Maryland now, I won’t say we’d win but we wouldn’t lose by 35 either. I see it closer to Syracuse with us having a shot.

Took the words off my fingertips. To have that much preparation time and look like a Edsall 2.0 team versus Maryland was disheartening, but much credit to Mora and his staff to bounce back from that game.

The Georgia State loss last year was when I realized the 2023 season was going to be a losing season and a lost cause.

If we had gone on to lose other games like this, I would say that the original poster might’ve had a point. But we did not. In fact that was the last game that we were on a losing end by more than seven points or so, Maryland on the other hand, went on to not do well - the win vs us maybe was the fluke? At least by that point differential.

I’m not gonna argue with any ranking that puts us anything below 50 because you can’t really point to any one single win and say that was a defining moment, to make the case for top 50.

Had we squeaked out of win versus Duke maybe, yes. Or knocked off Syracuse. But as it stands, I am very happy that we are in the top half of division one football programs and I’ll take it!

65 ranking is a wee bit generous for my eyeballs - but I appreciate the love.

I also believe in no universe, do we deserve to be ranked above Maryland - no matter the excuses we give for not showing up that day, 50-7 was too much of a beatdown to ever rank us above them, especially with our schedule.
Can you imagine what UConn's record would have been this year if we switched schedules w Maryland? Exactly.

I think anywhere between 71-80 is a very fair ranking.
81-89 would have been a bit low but live-able.
90 and below would have been ridiculous. no 8-win team should be in the 90s.

Personally, I agree with you that 65 seems on the generous side. Having said that, you can't make the argument that it's too high based on just one game in a 12 game schedule. In ranking 130 plus teams, you can't simply cherry pick head to head match ups. Unless you're making the case that no way Northern Illinois should be so far below Notre Dame.

Outside of the opener with the Terps we were in every game including a solid Orange team at the dome. If the roster is largely in tact for the bowl game we should be in good shape to compete and get a nine win season.

I said it clearly - we dont' deserve to be ranked above them in my book, because we got our ***** handed to us (it wasn't a nailbiter loss like ND/NIU) AND they had to play a B1G schedule, where we played a cupcake G5 schedule mostly. you reverse those schedules and we're 1-11 again --- we'd have beaten Villanova....where they're 10-2 at worst playing our schedule.

Maryland is 100000% a better team than UConn.
"how much" better is open to debate for me - but they are not worse.

Rankings are relevant for perception and recruiting. Whether you agree with 65 or not, the undebatable fact is that HUSKIES FB made a huge leap. Everyone knows it and it is borne out by the 65 rank. Biggest question, aside from Bowl opponent, is can we capitalize on the recruiting trail. Nothing would make me happier than to see Cole Welliver pissed off because we brought in a surefire starting QB through the portal.

On paper was Nick Evers a surefire starter? Only way I see that is based on HS rankings, as he had no real body of work to point to. So did he win it in camp? Did Skyler Bell lobby for him? Asking for a friend.

#60 UConn ^8 per CBS Sports rankings, back up 8 after dropping 8 last week. Huge win over UMass
#61 UNC v6
#62 WVU v4
#63 NC State ^11
#65 Cincy v2
#66 Auburn v1
#69 Cal v7
#70 UCLA ^5
#72 Wiscy v8
#75 UVA v9
#78 Arizona v9
#79 Michigan St v9
#80 Utah -
#84 Houston v8
#88 UCF v2
#89 Kentucky v5
#90 Maryland v7
#93 Northwestern v2
#95 Oregon St v5
#99 Wake Forest v3
#102 Stanford -
#105 Okie State v6
#109 Miss St v4
#115 Florida St v8
#123 Purdue v5

I take these rankings as they come, no exceptions. Blowouts happen all the time. If it happens in basketball or baseball, you say it was an awful game and move on. If it happens in football, people think it means something more than it does. UConn is better than Maryland. See above.

Evers was persuaded by Bell to come to UConn. But getting him to come to UConn also required promising the starting job (and whatever NIL). If you want a high quality QB from the portal, you have to promise they’ll start. It will always be a gamble but better to get a guy with a track record next time.

Thanks Kemba. Your statements are pretty direct and unequivocal, so I'm guessing you have some info I don't. Usage of Nick during the season seems to bear that out

Not saying we beat them, but Syracuse is better than them and we hung with them. 1st game of the year with a QB seeing his 1st college game action and they blew the doors off us. Playing them later in the year it probably wouldn't have looked the same. MD peaked game 1, we hadn't gotten started.

I find it ridiculous that CBS reported UConn had a Huge win over UMass. We came close to losing. But the ranking is fair.

Swap MD and Cuse slots on our schedule and we beat MD in November, Cuse looked like they were ready to play in September also, so probably same result, maybe not as bad as MD there.

The ranking are nonsense and we all know it. But in term of public relations value, they are doing us a real favor.

Sagarin has us at #98 but no one uses him any more since he is not in USA Today.
CBS Sports has us at #60 and every body looks at that.
I think Fox Sports at #59 is the best.

I'll take it.
