Yea, I read that. I doubt it...at least the GT. I could possibly see Virginia if and only if Virginia Tech is jumping to the SEC. I'm really not buying it. I do think that the $50M is enough to stop other schools. Most don't have a donor like Maryland, and all but FSU voted for the exit fee.

Yes, we do. We expand it to control Connecticut, and to help it fight for a greater share of NYC.

I really hate what's happening to college athletics. I only know 2 Maryland fans and they're pretty pissed about moving to the B1G mainly due to basketball. All of these changes are happening for the money, but almost every AD is still running in the red and they've managed to piss off a lot of fans in the process. Is it really worth it?

To answer that, you have to ask "is it worth it for whom?" Yes, it is worth it to the AD administrators, because the greater their top liens the more money they make. Is it worth it for the school itself? Of course not. Everyone makes money money, so everyone spends more money, and all that happens is the coaches and administrators make more money and the players have bigger TVs in their locker rooms.

Yeah, I don't ever want to hear about the "tradition" of college athletics. "Tradition" is pretty far down the list.

This just isn't true. I agree the coaches make more money, but we're talking $5 mill for coaches in $80 mill budgets. If you got a hold of coach's pay somehow, it still wouldn't dent expenditures that much.

The only winner in an arms race is the arms dealers, and that's what CFB has become. Meanwhile we're in our metaphoric bomb shelter hoping we have football to watch next year. One thing I'll say about the latest round of conference expansion, it shifted conversations away from how lousy our coaches are, and for that I am thankful. Hopefully this Thursday I can add that our conference limbo has been settled onto my list.

Yes, it is a waste. And you're run that exponential increases haven't put these schools on sound footing. So they continue to keep up with the Jones's. Which explains why Rutgers spent $120 million on a stadium, while it sank 25 spots in the USNWR rankings, likely because all the people making the reputational ranks knew quite well the academic side as imploding. Meanwhile, Syracuse gets tossed out of the AAU (after its budget increased 3-fold in 15 years) while Boston U. got added to the AAU (after nixing football 15 years ago).

Football and sports are great to have--if your school isn't imploding around them.

Add in also a basketball-only like Georgetown/Nova/St. John's leaving to the ACC to even out the basketball numbers once they take UL/UConn.

There is still not a shred of evidence that the basketball onlies weakened the Big East. In fact, all the evidence points to the contrary.

What killed the Big East is that the northeast cares less about college football than the rest of the country. Nothing more, nothing less.

Two things:
1. I think your implication is wrong about the ultimate cause of the BE's death.
2. Answer the question: "Add to what"? My point was that such a move would be an even worse scenario than the current one for the Big East.

Exactly. None of this makes any sense in a sane world. Ultimately all these $ are consumed by the athletics department. Sports are really nothing more than advertising.

disagree completely... The bbb onlies brought a different agenda to the table. there were constant disagreements between the fb and bb schools in terms of any decision making. When the BE was trying to save the league, Marinato floated Villanova as a potential fb addition. The remaining FB schools at the time had enough.
Since 2003 there has been more than enough evidence to suggest the fb and bb schools did not always see eye to eye. Do you really think that strengthens a conference, having multiple agendas.
Also, the BE wasn't dealing with ND from a position of strength. And, it's quite likely, neither is the ACC. The ACC is amazingly following the Big East down the drain... And ND will eventually join the Big10 when that happens, just as easily as they left the BE for the ACC...
Best think the ACC could do is give ND the ultimatum now...
