It is time to concede that our approach on 3 point defense is systematically flawed. Quite frankly - our help defense is a mess. Granted our offense doesn't pass the eye test too often this season and scores too few points - but this post is about our 3 point defense.

There have been a few select times in the second half when we have dropped the help defense concept and just stayed with our man - and that's when we have been successful.

With AD inside there is no reason why we don't have the mental discipline to stay with our man even if he lures you to sleep. Bazz in particular has been guilty. This season we have played very poor off ball defense - we don't crowd guys and get them to move off their sweet spots....long before they touch the ball. This is an easy part of the game - and we don't seem to focus on it.

The 3 point defense has cost us a couple times this season. Clearly our guys have a major problem with closing out, particuarly the guards. It seems they are either late getting out, or they forget to put a hand up (I can't even count how many times this has happened, you'd think it would be a relatively simple concept).

I'd rather have guys beaten off the dribble than have them allow open looks from three. The three point line is the easiest way to get beaten in college basketball. I suggest some of these guys watch some tape of Shane Battier.

I agree. I don't know if the degree to which we drop off our men on the perimeter is a coaching strategy, or a failure to tell guys not to do it, or what, but it's ridiculous. It kills us. 9 of their first 20 points today were the result of Bazz drifting off his man and being too late to recover.

Boat and Bazz while quick have no wing span, which could help.

I think we need to invest in some time for Daniels - he does have that wingspan. Granted like some others his defensive choices are not always great, but the potential is there.

Playhing the 3 guard lineup really hurt us defensively at times. Having no kind of length in the backcourt can be a killer. Jardine, Triche, and Waiters were able to shoot over the top unless we were right in their face.

I suggested this in the chat yesterday but the idea was dismissed pretty quickly. I think it might be the case that playing two really under-sized guards (neither Boat nor Bazz are 6') hurts our perimeter defense because, like you say, it's easy for guards 6'4 or so to shoot over them. That proverbial "hand in the face" isn't as bothersome when it doesn't reach eye level.

Lately our backcourt recruits have fallen into two categories -- under-sized point guards (Kemba, Bazz, Boat) and over-sized wings (Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, Roscoe, Daniels, Giff, Lamb to an extent). And both categories struggle with traditionally-sized 2's who are both too big for the former category and too quick for the latter.

Funny again I see the "3 point defense" overstated. There are some good points as we have guys they can shoot over for sure and at times our guards leave too much space to the shooters, but so do mosty teams you consider great defenses. The key to good 3 point defense is the other team. Always has been always will be. When a 33% team goes for 63% you're in a tload of trouble no matter how you defend the 3. Not sure how many games you've seen the Cuse play but they can core like mad on the inside, dunks and layups galore when playing well. Pretty sure you have to take away something and choose your poison!! They shot it well....oh well what can you do. Saw them have more open looks recently and look like a group of masons....no sense crying!!

Sometimes our 3 point defense looks like praying "please miss it'. Its not aggressive and there does seem to be some room for the shooter to get a good look. Also Ryan, Bazz and JL are often out of position either through help defense, incorrectly handling the screen or simply just not contesting the shooter. I too wonder if some of this is a result of the small guards on the floor.

Come tourney time this could hurt because lesser teams tend to rely on the 3 point shot to stay in the game. And if they are hot it could get ugly.

Time for investment is behind us. 6 games and we're a bubble team. We need to go with whatever the staff thinks will work right now. Not an investment for the future.

Daniels is a 2012/13 project, unless something dramatic happens in the next 2 weeks or so.

I've actually been surprised that opponents have not take more advantage of the size of our guards than they have. I think it was Georgetown that was working to post up our guys inside. The extreme amount of cheating off their men to provide help is just asking for trouble. Couple that with our bigs all trying to block every shot and we are just asking for trouble with open shooters and offensive boards.
