Tennessee season

I'm turning into a believer that this system will win some games. I still don't believe it is a system that will championships at this level because of the rebounding woes (sacrificing height for speed) and the fact that most top 10 teams can match that athleticism. That could possibly be mitigated with a focus on positionless basketball body types (long, athletic wings/forwards) but those type of players are in high demand, so it would be hard to recruit a whole team of them. I also think they will struggle with recruiting in the long term if this system earns a reputation that it won't prepare you for the next level -- which is very likely because of the lack of emphasis on fundamentals. Unless tweaks are made this this system, I kind of see this following a similar trajectory as Mike Neighbors time in the SEC...

I wonder about this too. I see little in the game plan that translates to pro basketball—screens, running plays, team defense, assists, etc. College coaches’ first priority is to win, but players who want to go further in basketball do look at programs in terms of preparation for pro bb.

IMO, the system attracts fast, athletic players who may not want to be hindered by a “team first” mentality—players who love the 1 on 1 part of the game.

I’m not a basketball expert in any sense…just my thoughts. I’m looking forward to the TN/SC game to see how the system goes against a team with excellent inside and outside games plus great defense.
 
I think we will see a difference next year. With the class coming in. It will be more to what coach wants. The twins and Prawl can allow Cooper and Whitehorn to play different positions.

That is what I am looking forward to seeing, the growth of the program especially with the new additions. The Lady Vols could be a force on the rise again.

Yep, you will end up with top 5 recruiting class next year, and years 2&3 will be proof of concept.

Caldwell also not stupid, she already sees how well she can recruit at Tenn (pretty amazing for an unknown 1st yr coach). She will tweek her program to try and win more.

The press and 3 works on math. Get 20 more shots per game, generate 20 turnovers, make 30% of threes, trust the math.

Only TX has blown up the math, and all of the losses have been by only one posession!

I like Caldwell. I have been entertained! UConn game will be fun. I hope we handle press like TX.

Caldwell has been very successful with this style. I think she will adjust as needed.
 
I’m bothered by the fact that the university is allowing Ms. Caldwell to coach a week after giving birth. I know at the end of the day it’s probably the decision that she made, but it’s not a responsible one. I get that the timing was incredibly bad because she’s a new coach in a very high profile position and I’m sure she feels an overwhelming responsibility to the commitment she made. I’m not judging her, but it does clearly point out the choices that women have to make if they have big careers. I think the worst part is that some other manager somewhere is going to say “well if Kim Caldwell could do it, then you can too”. I’m guessing that she feels like that her support system is so good that she can do this, but it still doesn’t make it right.

She also had the flu on the day she gave birth. I have similar thoughts but have kept my mouth closed so far due to today's match up against my team. I didn't want it to be perceived that I was making such statements out of personal bias.

Technically she was out for approx 5 days, as I believe she started attending practice last Friday. Her baby is still developing it's immune system amongst other things, and I think the rule of thumb is to minimize contact for those first two months after birth as a protection measure. I'm not a pediatric nurse, nor am I a parent, but something about this doesn't sit right with me. But she is an adult who can make her own decisions, so I have to trust that she understands the consequences and is taking the appropriate actions to mitigate any risk to her or her child's health.

The tough part is that they can't really say it's her choice to make, and also she's not allowed to come back when she wants. I absolutely hate to say anything in defense of the U of TN but they'd be in a tough spot.

I agree with both of you. This does not feel right to me, and it feels as though it's a basketball-motivated decision taking precedence over health-related (physical, mental, and emotional) decisions. If she can't trust her hand-picked assistants to take over for at least a month, what are they there for? UPGRADE THEM!

This is insane.
 
I think it was her decision. The timing of it wasn't ideal during the season. She trusts Jenna who has been with her for some time. That's why she coached the last game.
 
Seems quick but not the quickest. Believe Joni Taylor was only away 2 or 3 days, right?

Wow, some game. First half shooting may have sent WBB back to the stone age.:eek:

The Tenn 'press and 3' won the turnovers battle, the rebounding battle, the free throws battle and the field goals attempted battle...

...but still lost due poor shooting 31%/11% vs 46%/29% for SC. The Vols never quit though, actually making a 3 in last minute :D and reducing lead to 6.

Cutting way into big deficits but coming up a little short seems to be the story of the season for the Vols. Have lost 5 of their last 7 games in conference.

What I was saying is that when public figures make very public choices like this one, it puts pressures on other women, too. That was point about responsibility. If you read the rest of my post, I was pretty clear about that.

There are two main themes that I see, one afflicting this current team and one that will hurt the future teams.
This is not a great shooting team. Theirs is solely a volume issue and while some want to lament their shooting woes vs SC, they have not shot well against any decent defending team and they simply foul way too much. This hopefully will be seen in full on Feb 6.
The other “glossed” over point is besides 8 seniors or 5th year players on this team, the LVs lose most of their height and the incoming crop of 5 is not tall. Hurst at 6’2” is the tallest. Next year will be Senior Spearman at 6’4” and 6’2” Latham. While that may be more than enough for the traditionally soft OOC, it will be catastrophic in the SEC. Kim has her portal work cut out for her.
I will say this style has brought interest back to Knoxville but is it a foregone conclusion they are back in the “elite” conversations? Not hardly….

I would say that they have not played soft OOC until this year.
 
Yes Tennessee has eight players who won't be back next year. There is a very highly ranked class of five coming in. I think this class will be one of the best ever at Tennessee. That leaves room for three transfers. Look at the transfers this staff has already bought in.

Prawl and Civil look like they could be superstars in your system. I think those are the types of players that will make the press a nightmare. I'll have to see the Pauldo sisters in action to make a judgement but their height at 5'5" gives me pause as far as defensive effectiveness while running the full court press.

I agree about Prawl and Civil. I think the more players that fit this style of play. It will make the press a nightmare. Boyd I think will continue to get better. She was the best player for Tennessee last game according to Caldwell.
