Wow, Tenne$$ee also appears to be getting $upport of athletic department and boo$ters.

Will be fun to see 'press and 3' executed with capable 3-point shooters.
with more players that fit this style. I will be fun to see how the team does next few years.

I’m looking forward to the Texas game
Me too...first legit test for Tennessee against a top 10 team. Win (or lose in another close loss) and I'll acknowledge them as a legit top 16 team. Lose and I'll still think they're on the outside looking in.

I expect a lot of chaos in this game with both teams wanting to win the turnover battle. Tennessee will have no answers for the Texas bigs, especially Oldacre, so I think that will be the differentiating factor.

Oldacre is a super rebounder but I think she’ll be gasping like a guppie after a quarter

When has that happened this season?
How many times has she played against a team that presses an entire game? This will be her first. She is one of the VERY best rebounders in the game, but it’s difficult to carry that weight up and down the floor at full speed.

Oh, I think she’ll do well but I expect Vic to limit her minutes (and fouls) til end of the game crunch time when the Vols have shown their most vulnerability.

Maryland runs a fast-paced offense ;Texas had no problems keeping up with their pace.

Does it matter if Tennessee presses the whole game when Oldacre (and even Taylor JOnes) is already down on the low block? Do you expect her to be helping beat the press? I certainly don't. I could be wrong.

Twice you've stated that she's a great rebounder; she also scores 10.7 points a game. Plays nearly 19 minutes a game.

Texas also presses. Teams that press seem to hate being pressed. So, we'll see how effective each team's press is and how much of it they play. Rori Harmon knows how to handle the press; and, she knows how to press effectively.

Maybe…but my thought is only if the Vols are able to create a high volume of turnovers. If Rory Harmon doesn’t turn it over and Texas shoots reasonably well, it won’t be as much of an up and down game. It will still be fast paced, but not frenetic. If that plays out, it will come down to the Vols shooting accuracy, particularly from three. I think the Vols need a very high volume of shots to score a lot of points and I’m not sure Texas will allow that.

I personally like the result, but it must be really frustrating for Vol fans to lose such close games. I think when Caldwell gets a few more players that fit her style you guys are gonna be really tough. Sad/happy for that to happen.

Was a good game, though losing so many close games has to be super frustrating for the team. Their lack of rebounding is what’s causing them to lose most of these games. All that said, I think things will come together for the Lady Vols and they’ll start winning some close ones. Getting a close win over UCONN would be a magnificent way to turn things around :D

Two things…
First, the Vols press goes from crazy intense in the beginning to much less at the end. I think it lets them keep games close, but stops them from closing out. I don’t know if it’s because the players are tired or because they commit so many fouls at the beginning that they can‘t afford any more at the end.

Second, they look ragged and out of place in their half court zone defense. Just a guess, but they are spending so much energy trying to generate a turnover that they don’t play old fashioned defense.

Watched the game last night and it was a good one. Booker is phenominal. TN played a solid game in a tough environment against a good team.

The LVs do not back down this year. The players Caldwell brought in are noticeably faster than any TN team I've seen in recent memory. They are trending in a good direction even with the close losses.

Yes. While TN’s press can create absolute kaos for opposing teams, it also creates easy opportunities for drives to the basket, offensive rebounds and layups because TN’s defenders are frequently out of position. It will be interesting to see how UConn’s exceptional group of ball handling guards attack TN’s pressure defense.

Tennessee is way better than I thought. Arguably with their best player having a off game, they still could have won it. The future is indeed bright for Knoxville.

First congrats to coach Caldwell on the new born baby. I think considering a new coaching staff and style of play. Then adding the transfers. I think the team is doing good. They are still things to improve on. I would rather have close losses now than in March.

I'm turning into a believer that this system will win some games. I still don't believe it is a system that will championships at this level because of the rebounding woes (sacrificing height for speed) and the fact that most top 10 teams can match that athleticism. That could possibly be mitigated with a focus on positionless basketball body types (long, athletic wings/forwards) but those type of players are in high demand, so it would be hard to recruit a whole team of them. I also think they will struggle with recruiting in the long term if this system earns a reputation that it won't prepare you for the next level -- which is very likely because of the lack of emphasis on fundamentals. Unless tweaks are made this this system, I kind of see this following a similar trajectory as Mike Neighbors time in the SEC...
