Tennessee Post Game Thread (merged)

Great game! They had to battle in the first half and then took off in the second.

As I have said before Azzi has the best pure shot in women’s basketball. Azzi has some of the best shooting mechanics in all of basketball regardless of gender or league,

Everyone did their part and came together post half time. Give the coaches credit for delivering the right message in the locker room and the players executing.

Blanca was missed big time, score be damned, her size and speed match up pref3ctly against what TN does.

Have a great remainder of your Sunday Boneyarders.

On to the next!
Great post. Needs to be said more often that Azzi is also one of the best defenders in the nation. Her complete player AA status doesnt get enough ink. I mean, check her box score today. The steals, the rebounds, the assists— She balled out.

You cannot simulate the hype of UCONN - Tennessee. Even with an eventual 30-point win this game had me super-charged from start to finish. We needed this type of test at this crucial point of the season. We got tested and in the second half we passed the test. I am extremely proud of this team. 5 in double figures with Azzi and Sarah leading the way. Serah Williams put a huge smile on my face today. She more than stood up to the size and toughness of the Lady Vols. Go Huskies!

Things that make me happy:
  • Azzi having a great all around game. She’s making her pro case game by game. I love how versatile her game is now.
  • Sarah doing Sarah things. Her calm demeanor is invaluable.
  • K9 and Allie really contributing when needed. The confidence Geno put in them today will pay dividends down the road.
  • Sereh had a great 2nd half.
  • EDIT: I forgot about Shade doing her thing behind the scenes.
Would have loved to see how Blanca matched up with TN but healing is more important.

Was thinking back to an Ohio State game (I think tOSU) a few years ago where UConn really struggled with the press and Azzi was a deer in headlights. While things got a little ugly in the 2nd quarter, overall the team handled the press well.

I’m not a fan of Caldwell’s scheme, but I think the concentrated press was the best game plan for today’s game.

Bummed about no more strong teams on our schedule through the end of the regular season.

Tennessee's length gave us some problems today, but what I may like most of all about this team really came throught today. The efficiency on the floor for everyone is top notch. Some teams would start getting helter skelter from dealing with the length and the athleticism. Not this team. They occasionally get a little flat, a little funky, but it doesn't last. Such a pleasure to watch. When Allie got that end of quarter three I finally let the dog off my lap. Never been more pleased for a player called Serah. Ash just always working. Azzi a steadying influence and that tall sophomore held up her end. Man, I love this team.

It could have easily been 40+ with a smart second quarter and healthy Blanca.

Azzi was clearly the adult on the floor. Was Strong 100%? She seemed at times in that sick off balance fall mode today that we saw earlier in the season.

Now the ND and TN losses from last year have been avenged.

Can the commentators finally learn the appeal process? Yet another commentator describes it as a challenge and wrongly says there was a limit on them. Come on. It's half way through the season and you're getting paid to do a job ...

I hope this series continues. You just can’t simulate Tennessee’s physicality. It took the Huskies a while to adjust.

I am happy for Serah Williams. She more than held her own.

Having a hard time getting used to how the game is now officiated. Reaching, bumping, slaps now all seem to be ok. Tennessee definitely uses it to their advantage.

I don't think anybody should be surprised that Azzi came up big today.

KK now knows what it is like to be guarded by someone who provides the same pressure that she does.

Allie looked a little overwhelmed in the first half but proved that she can handle the physicality.
I think AZZI is more valuable to this year's UCONN team than Paige was to last year"s team. Is that heresy to say? She is so poised and competent. A brilliant player in every phase of the game. And reliable in a crisis.
Just great. This started well and ended better. Everyone sparked at one point or another, but Azzi and Sarah rose to the occasion as they must for us to get another NC.
Geno kept things stirred up, making the right subs to quell the tide and then to release it. He is an acknowledged wizard.
Imagine what Blanca might have added to the mix. Had she been in the game, TN might not have jumped out as they did, so excellent is Blanca's d.
OK. We've had our roughing up: now we know what we can do when we must. Onward.
Tennessee press forced far too many errant and desperate passes from UCONN, resulting in turnovers. But, if they can handle the Tennessee press, they can handle the press of anyone. And they did.

Azzi was UConn's best passer, defender, scoring threat and when she had the ball just brought a calmness and court vision to this very helter skelter game. Her assists, shots and press breaking was the difference in that 3rd quarter. This is one of her best games as a Husky showcasing all her skills. 27, 7, 7 and 4 is elite.

Sarah was mad all game and made tough bucket after tough bucket to keep UConn steady when it was tight. She was elite as well.

K9 is so shifty and speedy. She was the difference maker in the 3rd. KK played hard on defense, still has some time to develop on offense. Shade was nice, Ziebell made timely buckets and Serah Williams made some big time buckets. There were moments where this game was tight but Sarah and Azzi overwhelmed any notions that the would leave Storrs with a victory. Those two are the best 1-2 punch in NCAA wbb.

Please tell me that 3 is not the new e! My native tongue is getting strange. Some day we'll have to have a thread on acronyms.

The Uconn press didn't seem to bother TN much in the first half while KK had one of her worse games an 3 bad to's in the first half.Thankfully Heckle played great in the 3rd quarter to open it up
Williams played one of her better games
Big key to the game was Uconn outrebounding Tenn by 9
Sara and Azzi superb as usual

I had a feeling this was going to be one of UConn's toughest tests of the season, knowing how athletic Tennessee is.........a great pressure testing experience for UConn that will hopefully serve them well come tournament time......I just wish Blanca was available.......she would have had fun out there today........

I posted DEFENSE was the key to this game and 24 Points in the second half for Tennessee was it. They could not play the way they did in the first two quarters. 96 points for Uconn was their normal scoring, as all season. 38 game win streak and 10 more to the BE Title is a 48 game win streak and finally, a 6 game win streak and a 54 game final win streak for 2026 and NO 13 N.C. IT Is so nice to see Women's Basketball bact to normal. GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

USC was avenged as well

In the Chat, there was a lot of complaining about the refereeing, and yes, maybe a few fouls were missed. But frankly, Tennessee played their hearts out in the first 3 quarters, challenging every pass, every dribble, every loose ball. That's what people were mistaking for fouls, and it's exhausting for Tennessee and for their opponents. They deserve credit for the effort today. But I would fault Kim for not modulating their effort better. They had clearly run out of gas -- mental and physical -- by the 4th quarter. Her roster is not quite as strong as last season, mainly because of all the new faces, and she has to play Cooper and Spearman a lot more. Unless she can adjust, this problem is only going to get worse. It's not 'hockey line' substitution if two or three players get substantially more minutes. And that means she shouldn't demand so much effort from her team in the first half.

Sarah looked like she was wasted toward the end. She was man handled throughout and still scored 26. Azzi too played a whale of a game. Both put in all star performances that were needed but this entire team has no quit.

Yes, Azzi brought a calmness to the game. Noticed that when the ball was in her hands the defenders would back off probably on a scout showing she is an excellent dribbler and will burn you with a pass to an open player or blow by you if you aren't careful.

I think it is safe to say that Tennessee may be the longest and most athletic team that the Huskies will face this season. It bothered them, especially in the second quarter when things got squirrelly. However, the Vols may not have the best basketball players. I think what is most important to take from this game is that they made the adjustments they needed to make at half time and ended up taking control and dictating how the game was played in the second half.
