Tennessee Post Game Thread (merged)

The lesson learned this game is that no matter how good you are, you have to bring it the whole game without significant lulls or the game will get away from you. UConn was far from perfect, too many needless turn overs, too many second chance scores for UT and still ground UT down. What could have been a close game turned into a rout. This was as a terrific game for UConn to take into the final push toward the NCAAs.
I am not disagreeing with your main point, BUT according to the box score Uconn gave up a total of two second chance points off 11 O boards (0.2 per)- just how perfect do you want them to be on that stat. Maybe you meant points off of TOs and there they gave up nine, not a terrible number off 15 turnovers (0.6 per)

Uconn on the other hand scored 14 second chance points off 9 O boards (1.6 per) and 36 points off 20 TOs (1.8 per.)

The box is full of Uconn dominance
Assist 25-16
Steals 14-7
Blocks 6-0
Fast Break 22-6
Paint 46-24
Even with their first half struggles those are beat down stats reflective of how the game ended up. Assists/Steals/TO/Blks are right in line with their season stats playing against a difficult opponent.

I’ve gotta say, I think she’s a good coach but might be a tad too demanding of this roster. This is only the second year of what, let’s face it, is a complete rebuild of a program that had totally self-destructed and lost their mojo! She’s got way too many transfers and imo, is at serious risk of losing this team completely. Clearly, she has a plan, one that with the right personnel could be pretty devastating but based on what I’ve seen, she needs to get more of her own recruits into the mix. I think this could go two different ways. In four years she will either be contending for the title or will have had to seriously change her approach. I’m betting they will be a serious problem once she gets more of her own recruits on her roster. Anyhoo, this was a very good test for us and will, I believe provide great dividends later on.
I completely agree with your last sentence but as far as TN and their coach I frankly am not too concerned about whether a solution is found or not. There are too many other teams and opposing coaches out there to spend much time worrying about this one program until and only when we may face them again. Until then, next up.

Yes, noticed several potential issues-KK's wrap, Sarah speaking to Geno early in game with a pained expression on her face, several Huskies thrown/pushed to floor, etc. that seemed to slip by the announcers.
"Slip by"? Not really. They were much more interested in talking about more than the game. Sarah definitely had her hand up to her chest or stomach when she came out (but the camera only showed it for a few seconds and the announcers - well, you know) It may have been an elbow or something. She is one tough competitor and if she was at all distressed it must have been something more than just an incidental poke.

First quarter: yay!
Second quarter: boo!
Second half: LOL

Tennessee played an amazing second quarter to tie it up at halftime. But then UConn absolutely ate them alive and destroyed their souls

To start the second half, Sarah kept us composed with her typical calm play and production. Then K9 came in with unlimited energy to build the lead. Serah played solid defense and had a few layups. Eventually Azzi started launching threes and Allie got involved. Next thing you know UConn is up 30

GREAT WIN!
“Destroyed their souls.” It happens so quickly. THAT’S what teams can’t prepare for!

If there was ever a time to take Fudd and Strong out of the game late in Q4 for a stranding O, this was it!
For the National Championship game, sure. For a regular game at Gampel, no. UConn standards are just so high and it's important that Azzi and Sarah learn to play 30-35 minutes against top competition after part-time work in conference play. There's a method to his madness.

Bingo! She bailed us out with her presence of mind so many times
I saw this too, when she had the ball. Everyone knew to stop pressing and go to their man because she was not going to turn the ball over as much as everyone else did. She also saved multiple turnovers, on the baseline in the frontcourt, she just cleaned up a lot of messes today while minimizing her own.

I'll stand corrected on that.

I just read that this 30 point loss was the biggest in this entire Tennessee vs. Uconn rivalry.

It was also the second worst loss in the history of Tennessee. They had a 31 point loss back in 1984....

Just imagine if we had Blanca.

No. 1 UConn hands Tennessee worst loss in storied rivalry

Sorry, I’m lazy and don’t want to read through 6 pages of posts, but I’m curious why Geno left the starters in and let them take that last shot.

Looking at the highlights it looks like a fair number of the Vols don't know what setting a screen means.

Tenn was still pressing full court. No need to put Kelis and Yanna in cold off the bench and have to deal with that.

The last UConn shot was taken with only a few seconds on the shot clock and 25 seconds left in the game. Teams typically shoot the ball in that circumstance.

Just a couple of quick thoughts:

UConn played an exceptionally dumb 2Q. Stupid turnovers, allowing open shots and blowby's for easy baskets. In 1Q, 3Q and 4Q they played UConn basketball.
I have a hard time believing UConn out rebounded them. Seemed like Tenn got an awfully large amounts of offensive rebounds. Sometime 2 or 3 in a possession.
The gamed turn with K9 on the court.
Shade maybe didn't have eyepopping numbers but check out her +/-. UConn is a better team with Ash on the court.

2nd quarter was head scratching, but second half was a thing of beauty. I was very impressed with K9 today. Also, glad to see Azzi light it up!

Unfortunately, that was their last challenge of the season. Hopefully Geno can challenge them during the rest of conference play. Next game vs DePaul. That will be tough to find a challenge there.
