Tell me about the NEW Big Ten

The same was said when Nebraska was set to join the league
It was? It's not like they had an exceptional history in women's hoops prior to joining the Big 10. Ha, I just looked, they won the Big 8/12 twice in 30 years. There's no way anybody was predicting they were gonna come in and run the Big 10.

edit--are you confused and thinking of volleyball?

edit X2--maybe you meant Maryland, but in that case it was correct; won the conference 7 of their first 8 years and were 2nd the other season

Right now it would appear USC and UCLA have better rosters so they might go on to win. To me though I think USC will be above average but not great and UCLA will less than them. The Elite teams will be the usual suspects like UConn, SCar, and maybe a ND or a Texas. Everyone else will be playing to get to the final 4.
You are right that USC still has to prove themselves vs the 4 you mention, but it's not like they have far to go.

They went 29-6 and were a #1 seed already last year. Their star, who seems to like physical play, now has a year of experience and will have an improved surrounding group.

With the December UConn game, we get an early look at how the Trojan group is meshing, and who is available and playing for the Huskies.

It's a pretty good bet that USC does win the Big and enters tourney again with about 5 losses.

Exactly. Maryland was expected to dominate the B1G and did--until Iowa acquired more top-end talent (several Iowa players have won B1G POY in the last seven years) and Brenda started losing hers (Angel Reese won a conference POY elsewhere).

I am just looking forward to seeing what each team and player does over this off season. Teams are adding recruits, some more talented than others but it is all about that heart, mind, and getting in the gym and working on your craft.

Being a Big Ten guy (Minnesota/Michigan), I am hoping that our Flagship programs, Indiana, Ohio State, Iowa, just remind USC, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon, this is the Big Ten. You ain't running nothing here. Football. That is another story. Basketball. Not happing.

I actually think the newcomers are going to struggle more in football. Maybe Oregon is loaded up fairly well, but Washington is in rebuild mode and USC was terrible last year. But Michigan/Ohio St./Penn St. aren't too likely to move out of the way. I really don't know about men's hoops, but women's hoops at least some of the western interlopers are poised to do some damage. The LA schools. I don't think you have to worry much about the teams from the northwest.

Interesting piece from the Hawkeye report. Didn't expect to see some of the teams ranked where they were.

Interesting article. I wonder how well tOSU will do. A lot rides on Cambridge for them, I think.

I also wonder if Iowa Illinois and Nebraska are ranked too high here.

Maryland has added some interesting talent, and Brenda has shown some talent for blending newcomers in. Sellers with Poffenbarger and McLean could be interesting. And if Brenda manages to unlock DeBerry's abilities, she'll have earned my respect just for that.

And Minnesota added Annika Stewart, Mara Braun's old HS teammate. She struggled at Nebraska, but I wonder if Mara and Amaya and Grace and Mallory can work a little magic with Annika's help.

Washington got a tough break recently when incoming freshman, 6'4 Annika Soltau, de-committed from the Huskies and decided to play pro ball in Spain. Very talented player with extensive international experience with the German national team. She has a ton of promise.

That's a pretty wild stat. UCONN has 11 on their roster next year, more than the entire 14 team Big Ten combined.

The big question mark for the California schools, IMO, is coaching. Programs like Iowa, Indiana and Maryland may not have a ton of talent but have really good coaches and those programs often outperform expectations. UCLA has recruited well forever but hasn't gotten over the hump to make a Final Four, and Gottlieb is doing good things at USC but the product on the court is a little jumbled.
Yup. Gottlieb's teams at Cal were a mess. Now she just recruits with NIL money in Southern California. She is still the same coach.

This was a friendly between Canada and Portugal as prep for the Canadians before the Olympics that may be if interest to BIG10 fans.

For any Michigan or USC fans, Syla Swords and Avery Howell in action.
Oregon fans, Philipina Kyei also played. She looks to be in better shape and moving a bit faster too.

Portugal is ranked in the 60s, however I thought they all played well in this game.

I would be shocked if Iowa finished fourth.

Some game action for the new terps. I don't see Amari, Smikle, and Mir. Saylors rebounding is something else. Im interested how it translates to the BIG.

Wyatt and his Hoopla newsletter with a recap on his 2023-2024 predictions. His pre-season team analysis will be coming out soon. He does a great job diving in deeper than others. Highly recommend checking it out when the series starts.

Hey. It has "Michigan" in the conversation, so it is Big Ten related news. It would have been nice to see Oregon State and South Carolina in the opening tip of the tournament but with Oregon State going through such a transformation so quickly, it is understandable. This is a great chance for Michigan and Coach Arico Barnes to showcase their talented roster in this matchup.

A lot of Lucy content today on Twitter. Seems like she's really embracing being in Iowa. Made me a bit excited about the team.

Iowa with the addition of Lucy should maintain their top 20 rankings. They have some really solid players and if they buy into what their new coaching is preaching, good things could happen.

We've got 4 from the BIG10 competing in the WNBA All-star weekend. This should be fun.
