Things not looking good for Carolyn Kieger in Happy Valley. Off to an 0-3 conference start, and could easily be something like 1-8 or 0-9 at the halfway point in conference play. All games against Rutgers (2), Washington, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Purdue are in the back half of the conference schedule. Will be interesting to see if PSU can hang together to make some hay down the conference stretch.

Hey, you didn't get the memo? Washington isn't an easy out apparently. Ask Illinois about that.

She's cooked, IMO. We can start talking about possible replacements. I can't think of any that would be a major upgrade, however.

Welp. Haven't followed Rutgers too closely. What could McMiller have done to be benched for this game? I've been under the impression she's a playmaker for the team.

I have no idea why McMiller was benched but it doesn't appear to be injury or performance-related. You asked what could she have done and, again, I have no idea but it could be a number of things, including academics or behavior deemed detrimental to the team.

Should have noted it was a rhetorical question but it still caught me off guard. A scan of the Rutgers board gives an impression that it may be the latter.

Washington is running an interesting promo for their game against Wisconsin on Tuesday. It's Girly Pop Night. Among other things, there is a raffle (sorry, students only) with the prize 2 tickets to see Dua Lipa at Climate Pledge Arena. I don't know how much the raffle tickets are, but I'll guarantee it's a lot less than tickets to the concert.

My guess is that neither UCLA nor USC will lose a BIG conference game outside of LA. But USC losing tonight at Maryland is perhaps the best chance for that to happen. One of the more interesting BIG games of the season. Tonight on FS1.

One wonders how the California players are being affected by fire news...
I just think that no matter how dominant a player or team seem to be, so many variables come into play that going undefeated (except against each other) in a very good conference is unlikely. Even though they will probably be the clear favorite in every other conference game.

Okay, here's a bold prediction. Seems like the B1G has had a tendency in recent years for a bunch of teams to get lumped in the middle of the standings. With 18 members now, we might see the biggest log jam in the standings in a conference ever!

@YoDore

An entertaining, back and forth game that ended, 79-74 USC over Maryland, with a 21-16 fourth quarter.

Yes, Watkins led the Trojans in scoring, but worked with lots of contributors: Iriafen scored some clutch baskets; Rayah Marshall had key boards (15) and blocks (4) and an entry pass or two and the freshmen trio of Kennedy Smith, Avery Howell and Kayleigh Heckell. Smith is a superb athlete and Heckel, in 26 minutes, scored 10 points (4-5 shooting), dished out 4 assists and had 3 rebounds. Howell is a composed contributor. Really good combination of experience, talented frosh not scared of the moments and, of course, a superstar.

Shyanne Sellers must've sensed all the WNBA personnel in the building and put on a show with definitive drives to the basket, often resulting in fouls, which she converted 10-11 times. Kaylene Smikle didn't shoot particularly well, but Christina Dalce scored (15 pts) and rebounded (12) well. Saylor Poffenbarger is still a lesson in anticipation in boxing out: the 6'2" player had 17 rebounds.

Noted that both teams had 20+ fouls called on them, resulting in Watkins and Smith fouling out. Would have to go back to see if the game was just called tightly and/or if teams were reaching a lot, but -- if the latter -- I'd get it in the scout if I'm playing against either team.
