Tarris Reed stuff

It's not just defense. He doesn't attack the rim, doesn't draw fouls, doesn't rebound and doesn't pass the ball very well. He's a really good shooter from 3. So far, he's not a very complete basketball player. I truly hope that changes, but he's no Ben Gordon.
He actually attacked the rim last season…he unfortunately ended up on his ass after being knocked to the floor most of the time He has the body…needs to be on his feet.

I think most of this isn't due to ability. Also in college, there still isn't 108 players better than Solo Ball. He was a top 10 player in the BE last year. If you just do the power 5 that's at least make him to 50-75. At the very least.

Guess people forgot Solo was grading out as one of the worst defenders in all of college hoops last year for awhile. He needs to make a massive leap on that end to be a truly elite player.
Yup. There are something like 1800 D-I starters, and he was in the bottom 20%.

Defense is a pride thing. Hopefully that embarrasses him into showing up on that end.

He was much better late in the year. And he has got the eye of the tiger. The kid wants all the smoke that comes with being an alpha Husky.

BTW Solo was the only Sophmore to make an all BE 1st or 2nd team. Everyone else was a junior and above. He is not the 109th best player in the country. That's lunacy

To double down only 7 out of 50(14%) all conference power 5 teams were Sophmore or younger

VJ Edgecomb FR
Tre Johnson FR
Cooper Flagg FR
Kon Kunnepel FR
Derrick Queen FR
Collin Boyles SO
JT Toppin SO
and.........

SOLO BALL.

There's a legitimate argument to be made that Solo Ball was the best and definitely one of the best sophomores in the country.

P.S. I did a super quick look to find this data, I could've missed somebody

I don't really care where he's ranked. Only how he plays this year. But he didn't belong on that top 30.

1049th eh? I hope the coaching staff shows him this. Call me naive but I'd bet Ball will be a lot better than that this season.

Considering they are looking at 5500 players, at 1049th, Solo is in the top 20% of defensive players. Well above average. An average defender clusters around 2750.

Solo Ball was sure pursued like a top 30 player if you believe the reports this summer.

I hate nerd math in sports.

For those who actually watch Solo spent huge portions of last season playing better then Alex and Taris. Lol

If we’re benchmarking him against bench players for MD Balt County, then not sure that is the right lens either.

I’d probably sort against top 75 starting 5.

He was a better scorer than Alex and Tarris, was he more impactful all around player?

His scoring carried us a lot last season when buckets were hard to come by, especially when Liam was out. You can easily make a case he was our most important player last season.
He’s obviously up there, but was he more important on offense than McNeeley? I think that’s debatable since his offense is predicated on others creating for him. Does his elite shooting make up for the massive holes he had in his game? Reed gave you 4 less points, but was elite on the boards, and solid on defense. Karaban gave us the same ppg on worse efficiency, but rebounded, defended, and passed at considerably higher levels.

I’d probably put the “impact” list as:

1. McNeeley
2. Reed
3. Karaban
4. Ball

I’m hoping Solo passes Alex this year with improvement to his defense and playmaking ability. But I think yall are heavily glossing over the flaws in his game. If you wanna say he was more impactful than Karaban simply because of how often he struggled with his shot, I could hear the argument, but I think that’s still ignoring all the other elite role player stuff Karaban does.

McNeeley I'll give you, Karaban is debatable but I'd lean Ball over him based on how they actually played last year. But I don't think Reed is even in the conversation. Should he have been, probably. But he played 413 less minutes than Ball and 486 less than Karaban. He just had far less time to even be impactful

Just having a point guard scoring threat in Silas is going to change everything this year for the other players including Solo. He may not be scoring quite as much but he has that ability to break games open. Can’t wait to see this team on the floor.

So Silas and Malachi 26 vs Hassan and Aidan(?) 25, if this is as big a jump as most people think, it's going to be very exciting!! Ask AI who UConns point guards are this year if you want a surprize or a laugh.

Upgrade is titanic. Not only do you have a true dude running point, you have a change of pace natural distributing PG behind him. You have two dawgs you can roll out there. I personally think Silas has higher upside than Newton - better athlete, more explosive, really strong base and strong defender. He is way stronger to the rim than Tristen. Tristen was instinctive, savvy and was perfect for that roster/offense, but wasn't a real dynamic profile.

Super exciting season coming off last year. Leaps to watch, new guys look to check out and seeing what type of rotations Hurley spins out there. The flexibility on this team is going to be fun to watch play out.

I agree with you, Solo had elite shooting but absolutely awful defense. You can check the film he accepted almost every single screen set on him. Almost like he was looking to get taken out of the play on purpose. That would force a rotation and someone else on our team would be mismatched. He finally started to figure it out the last few games of the season so I'm hopeful he'll at least be serviceable on defense. If he's average or above average on defense then we're going to have a special year.
