Tarris Reed Jr. | Page 4 | The Boneyard

Tarris Reed Jr.

His form and rotation on the 3 was amazing. There are many times he is out there at the 3 point line wide open. Wonder what he would shoot out there and have they done it on practice. Why not?
Dan mentioned in the Xavier post game presser that Reed has been begging him to let him shoot the occasional three if/when open. So far Danny hasn't given him the green light but I gotta believe its coming. IIRC-Dan is using the "carrot" of a 80% FT% as the minimum criteria for the green light for TR.

I have been impressed with Tarris's FT% at UConn vs Michigan. 73% vs 56%.. A substantial improvement. He's not a liability at the Line in crunch time if fouled. Very nice stroke for a 5. Makes you wonder what was going on at Michigan.

This is from a November article:

"When UConn men’s basketball center Tarris Reed Jr. went looking for ways to refine his play and become a legitimate college basketball force, there’s one player in particular he began studying: Adama Sanogo.

This was well before Reed was at UConn. He watched a lot of film of Sanogo last season while at Michigan, usually with Jay Smith, the director of player personnel and development on Juwan Howard's staff.

“Now I'm here,” Reed said Tuesday after UConn’s practice at the Werth Champions Center. “Still watching film of him.”

Reed is mesmerized by the efficient ways of Sanogo, who led UConn to the 2023 national championship and was the most outstanding player at the Final Four.

“He makes the game so simple and it's like, man, I want to do that,” Reed said. “His duck-ins, his jump hooks, his layups, his dunks. Everything was just simplified. If I could get there, I'll be in a great spot. … I can thrive in the role he was put in. I just need to get to that point.”

I’ve been very impressed with reed. I’ve noticed lots of improvement even since the season started. Kid’s gonna be great.

When he first committed to UConn I found this vid with an ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE TAKE on reed @ sleepers media.

At 4:15 this guy says some garbage about reed that has not aged well at all, and is just rude and awful anyway. These guys should not have a podcast at all.

Have these guys done a recent pod about Reed? I'd love to hear them now

Hurley said he ties Free Throw percentage to his willingness to let guys shoot 3s and that Tarris has been begging to shoot them in game. No wonder he has been shooting much better from the foul line.
Interesting!

Remember, both Adama and ClingKong didn't take 3's until later in the season, at the end of their UConn career. Neither one was a prolific long range shooter, but showed enough to make themselves dangerous.

Tarris might be getting ready to show another side to his game.

Unless one of those three other than Ross become better perimeter defenders everyone is going to deal with Ross coming in first. Again look at the game film. Ross is our best perimeter defender and we are one of the worst teams in the country defending the three point shot. Liam is going to stay on the floor as is AK (unless foul trouble) for 35 minutes plus a game. Stewart is not quick enough to guard quick 6’4” to 6’6” wings or 2 guards that can shoot the three. So he really only can sub in for Liam or AK even though he is the most talented (if Tarris does not start) player we have on the bench.
May be true, but Nowell spelling Hassan effectively is critical for Hassan to be effective all game, all season long(could be Mahaney if he radically transforms, betting Nowell though). Doesn't matter when Hass gets his "down time", he just needs it at some point(s) every game. Nowell needs to be ready(or Mahaney). Singare and Stewart are close to being what we need when they come in. Improvement from where they are gives us another weapon, especially Stewart. Jaylin needs to drive and defend better, but he is not far away. His improvement means we don't lose much if he spells McNeeley or Karaban. Karaban, McNeeley and Stewart on the floor together means Ball gets a breather.

There is your Tournament buffer team. Could be fun to see them all come in at once ala the Knicks "minute men"(name them!!??) in their 1973 title run.

Totally agree on your post.

For a body type like Reed Jr. another off season of conditioning in turning some of that poundage into lean muscle should do wonders.

I know we were hoping to get the portal center out of Rutgers (Omoruyi), but no regrets now.
Sorry but are we watching the same dancing Bear out there pirouetting around at 6’10” 260? You guys think his athleticism and conditioning should be his focus? He’s not strong enough? He is physically dominating everyone. He’s not as good a basketball player as Sanogo yet but he’s a bigger stronger better athlete full stop. He needs to be working on basketball stuff and then his game will catch up to his physicality.

Too early for this call about Singare. He will have minutes to grow his game and has been a solid contributor.
I hope so. I like the kid.

If he’s getting minutes to develop from this point, someone’s hurt or in foul trouble though. Not many blowouts or garbage time in Big East play.

Have a feeling a lot of the kids at Michigan (including Reed) checked out and lost focus due to the debacle that was Juwan Howard. Sorta like a star player on a terrible team in MLB or the NBA that plays mediocre all year, then gets traded to a contender and is suddenly playing at an MVP level.

That was not what either of us said. Generally takes 2 years to really see the effects of a new S&C program. While I am sure TR had training at Michigan and HS, belief is that ours is at a different level, and minimally with different focii than what he has seen. The physical improvements have been clear in the first year. Another full year, with emphasis on Quickness, speed and explosiveness will yield results. His technical improvements as a Basketball player will be enhanced by the improvements in those physical traits. Hurley might have to find another level of bear above the Kodiak to describe Tarris if he fully embraces and adapts to the S&C regimen.

I said it b4 during preseason & l'll say it again Reed needs to start he's really like that & would be a more effective weapon for us with more mins and touches
Reed gives UConn that reliable post threat which creates a goto option when we go into shooting slumps, his ability to bully in the paint gets UConn opponents into early foul trouble which create FT opportunities & for other to get to the hoop for lay ups bc the defense cant guard as aggressive plus he’s a beast on the boards plus he’s a reli FT shooter not to mention he can extend out to 3 but Dan Hurley hasn’t allowed him to show that part of his game ( he has a nice stroke if u watched his tape)… and Reed starting allows Samson to be more effective & bring that electric energy as he’s shown at an elite level coming off the bench with his alley dunks & off ball blocks
Unleashing Reed puts us in a top5 tier for legitimate chase for this 3peat ... put some respect on his name #BIGHass #BearisReed

Side note I appreciate & love what Samson brings & we def need him but I truly believe he's more effective off the bench as he has proven to have been in the previous yrs I believe Dan Hurley & company have to be giving this serious consideration now

It was in a Courant article this morning.

“A lot of these guys know that I connect their free throw shooting percentage, especially the centers, to whether I’m gonna let them shoot 3s,” Hurley said.

“Tarris is dying to shoot a 3, he like dreams of it,” Hurley said. “But you can see his technique is clean, he’s got great rotation. He’s just a very talented guy. When the killer instinct and the motor non-stop catches up to the physical traits, watch out. But he’s a good free throw shooter.”

Their takes on UConn are always garbage lol! They finally started using different guys in the latest UConn centric episode.

Tarris will have a major influence in this one for the good guys.

Don't get the Courant anymore (online or on the doorstep) so obviously wasn't aware that Courant was going to comment on it today. Appreciate the heads up. Based on his rep from Michigan as an ok FT shooter. I couldn't believe how good he looked for us from Day 1. There seemed to be a disconnect between his Michigan numbers and what my eyes were seeing once in Storrs.

FWIW-I see no reason why he can't be a decent three point shooter. Not sure it's a requirement this season but it certainly will get the attention of NBA scouts as he progresses at UConn over the next two seasons.

Ross and Stewart need and deserve minutes.

Singare can develop significantly in practice versus Johnson and Reed. As far as seeing the floor, he is our "break glass in case of emergency" center and will have a tough time getting in games.

I'm not sure about Nowell. I think Hurley will try to get him in games as game speed will help him. He is a post up nightmare at 6 feet (in sneakers) but he is a good ball handler and that could come in handy. I don't think he has Hurley's trust yet.

Horrible take on Reed.

With his form, I won't be surprised if he develops a shot further and further out like Sanogo did. He has nice form.
Once thing he does differently than Sanogo is that he is usually moving toward the hoop at the end of his move and shot, which puts him in better offensive rebounding position on his own shot.
You can there is a ton of talent there and I honestly thought Hurley was blowing smoke when he said they are simplifying the game for him, but you can see they are putting the kid in a position to succeed (which is the Hurley way).
Just wish he had 3 years to develop in Storrs than 2.

The most amazing thing to me is how many players the coaching staff has had noticeably improving game to game—Reed obviously being a big one

Interesting POV from Seth and makes total sense. They should be rejoicing at the Reed’s Xmas dinner table. Not sure what it’s going to sound like at the Mahaney table after his minutes log and 30 degree weather.

Players go home and don't come back? Wow. As far as Mahaney goes, I'm rooting for him and hope he can find his role on the team. There was a nice picture of him on the court with Hurley in recognition of his 1000 career points.
