Tarris Reed Appreciation Thread

It's probably going to be Dixon, but here's the comparison:

Eric Dixon
2-0
33 PPG
8.5 RPG
60% FG
53% 3FG

Tarris Reed Jr.
2-0
22 PPG
14 RPG
78% FG
3.5 BPG
I was thinking the same as well, but Reed deserves it as his stat line would win BE POW most times in any other week.

Johnson gets 2 minutes at the start of a game to show effectiveness and then Tarris comes in if not.

We've never won a championship with Johnson starting. I'd use that logic on Johnson come tourney time.

Per 40 numbers for Adama Sanogo and Tarris Reed. Both of their junior season numbers. Of course Sanogo won the championship and had the benefit of three seasons in the program, while Tarris is in his first season with the program.

Sanogo- 25.9 points, 11.6 rebs, 1.2 blocks, 1.9 assists, 2.9 turnovers, 1.0 steals.

Reed- 20 points, 14.4 rebs, 3.4 blocks, 2 assists, 2.4 turnovers, 1.4 steals.

This sounds ridiculous - let’s start our lesser guy to see if he flames out, yank him after a minute? How can that be any more confidence building than bringing him off bench as he’s suited to do and give him 5 minutes. I don’t think even Hurley is that stubborn or superstitious or what have you. There is no logic to starting Samson.

Also Samson sucks at the tip for as springy as he is - the one extra possession you might get by winning a tip could be meaningful in March.

The Sonogo/Reed comp is interesting but makes sense. Sonogo the more refined post scorer but Reed generally better at all other phases. Reed is a bit lighter on his feet as a player.

I think the Reed we just saw isn’t the same one that we have seen this year. Even his good games didn’t rival this one. He ran the floor. Attacked the basket and defensively made it real unpleasant for anyone who came into the lane. In my estimation, this has to be a result of Dan Hurley and his coaching staff. What ever the message they gave him it worked. Personally, I would like to see this lead to him either shooting that ball from 12 to 14 feet on occasion and at the very least working hard and using his body to get open at the low post. I don’t think it matters whether opponents are bigger. He is a real potential attacker. I don’t really care who starts these games but even the most die hard Johnson fans have to see the difference between these two and their games. Samson Johnson is still a very useful player. Oh also if he doesn’t shoot that ball from 12 or 14, it would be fun to see him get the green light to take it to the rack. His body control is very good.

havent we beat this to death, Tarris should start…. Leave it as is…..Samson should get pulled after two minutes … hell let’s start a Singare should get minutes oh that was in here somewhere,

Reed has absolutely played well the last 2 games but I think people here need to calm down a little. After all, Georgetown did not have a center and Providence didn't have one that would be considered a division 1 caliber center. That being said, Samson did not exactly shine in those 2 games and confidence is a big part of success on the court and Reed certainly should be more confident after these last 2 games.

His per 40 numbers are insanely good. Reed Jr is finally starting to play like the top 30 recruit he was coming out of HS. He gives us a fighting chance to make noise in March if he can keep this up. He is going to be filthy next year, can’t wait!

the reason Reed isnt and wont be starting is Hurley's preference for defensive pressure over offense

The high hedge, which really hasnt worked in awhile since its predictable/ easily scouted for, makes Reed a liability since our man rotations are inconsistent at best this year.

He should be starting (since Maui like many have called for), and Hurley should tap brakes on high/hedge & attempts at over-extended man.

It's not gonna happen though.

Reed's teammates are taking advantage of his talents better now that Dan is allowing for improvisation in offensive sets earlier in shot clock. Tarris has always had the talent. The confidence everyone in the Program is showing him-along with more minutes- can be potent. He's also being smarter on how he's using his fouls-being more selective and disciplined. BTW-Tarris has really improved on his use of his left hand in traffic. Sanogo-esque.

Would love to see this version of Tarris (and his motor) vs Ejiofor in BET Finals. Keep grinding and winning.

Tarris walked in being able to use both hands well.

Would love to see Tarris as more of a hub of the offense, and developing him in the passing game. This is one thing Sonogo didn’t do well, as was generally a black hole. Tarris comes off as a more mindful passer. A kid like Broome averages almost 3.5 assists per game given the attention he gets. Tarris will start drawing more attention the further we go, so it’ll be nice if that extra attention turns into open looks on the perimeter.

Agree with your points. Looks to me like he's going to his left more as his opportunities and minutes have increased this season. I know he's been studying Sanogo tapes since his Michigan days and certainly looks confident when he puts it up-in traffic-with his left hand. Sanogo was automatic in the deep paint and Tarris is showing similar trends.

Peaking at the right time.

Sonogo was a massive user of the pump fake, which he was able to do because he had hands like steel traps and couldn’t be stripped. Also amazing at using his shoulder from a controlled position to bump, get a little timing advantage and go over. His game was based on precision. Tarris tends to be much more of an athlete around the rim, also bigger/longer. If Tarris could ever develop that Adama game he’d be lethal.

The starter debate on Reed rages on. Hurley wants him to play at least 28 minutes per game. Yesterday he played 32 and for a big lug traipsing up and down the court that is a lot. So does it matter when those minutes happen?
If UConn starts Johnson and is falling behind then he goes to the bench. Yesterday was 53 seconds.
If he holds his own then Reed preserves his fouls, but if we are getting out rebounded then Reed comes in regardless of score.
Hurley has this thing figured out, he’s way ahead of us.

I can’t see him tanking because of what he can provide. He just needs to be physical and a tone setter from the jump. The team doesn’t need 13 pts and 9 boards a game from him to change the complexion of a game.
I think we need at least 13/9, he's the most reliable offensive threat we have, and certainly the best rebounder. Of course, I'm a selfish pig, because I also want three blocks.

Great games by Reed recently and I too believe he should be starting, but let's not get too excited. He had these 2 great games against 2 mid tier Big East teams who are both missing their best front court player. Frankly, he should dominate those scenarios.

He kicked Zubi Ejifor’s butt as well, one of our know competent physical players against that team. It’s not just these last two games. If anything Samsons production has tanked against better competition.

Reed, Jr. played major minutes and we held Providence to 40% shooting. Good formula for D as Reed, Jr. is much more valuable on D than Johnson and other teams know this. Helps tremendously when guards are not driving if Reed, Jr., is patrolling but are free to do so on Johnson who is never in position.

Tarris, nicest kid on the team, is slowly developing his Pedro Serrano marbles

Don't disagree on Johnson, but some here are acting as if Reed has turned some kind of corner and is ready to put us on his back and carry us to the 3-peat.

Let's call it for what it is... He's CLEARLY the best 5 and best rebounder on our roster and he deserves to start over Johnson. He has been playing much better recently over the last few games; although we have to also acknowledge that those games were against some teams with pretty small/mediocre front lines that in two cases are missing a starter due to injury.

His recent play is encouraging and he's been engaged on both ends of the floor. Hopefully that gives him some confidence that can carry forward because he certainly has the talent to be a force down low more consistently than he has been this year.

++ Does any other team have a 5/C who has 8-9 double doubles but always comes off the bench?

Seemed to start by him saying "no" and ended with "we are excited to see what he can do the rest of the year" which I take to mean more minutes and games like vs Providence the more minutes he will get which means by the dance he could start.

This is so brilliant by Dan because any team we draw is likely gamed for Johnson to start and take advantage of his limitations, then we start Reed, Jr. and that messes with their confidence.
