At least the old Big East cupcake games were against relatively local teams with whom you had a lot of history and didn't require a lot of effort to find a reason to get up for the game. I'd take a ho-hum Wednesday game against Seton Hall over a ho-hum Wednesday game against Clemson. ACC basketball power is essentially now Duke, UNC, and most of the Big East powers.
And this is a very important point. Regional rivalries have been lost and the value they bring has been been overlooked. They generate fan excitement and kids in the region want to be part of that excitement, so recruiting benefits.

There is a reason why BC has struggled. Same with WV. I don't think Cuse, Ville and Pitt help the ACC regionally as much as Rutgers, UConn and Maryland would have helped. Cuse is a borderline outlier. Pitt and Ville are definitely geographic outliers. Things will be fine if they remain good programs. But they can deteriorate a lot quicker if they start to struggle.

I still don't see the thrill for college football to be honest
Well for 1 game day experience is a billion times better for college football then basketball.. i mean even tailgating at the rent is still better than trying to get in and out of XL or Gampel. And thats just UCONN. you go to places like Penn ST, the whole freaking town shuts down on game day, and its all about football. Don't get me wrong, i love basketball, and when Gampel is rocking its 2nd to none.. but the game day experience football is a whole other animal. that being said, being at the rent when its half empty, freezing cold, and were down by 21 in the 1st half, sucks, but when things are good, they blow basketball out the water..

Here is the Old Big East in terms of 2014 RPI:

4 Villanova
7 Syracuse
16 Pitt
19 UConn
28 Cincinnati
41 Louisville
47 Georgetown
60 Providence
74 West Virginia
88 Marquette
89 DePaul
90 St. John's
92 Notre Dame
114 Seton Hall
169 South Florida
181 Rutgers

Looking at that makes me hate college football.
