And he was saying that the ACC is not like the Big East. Badly paraphrased --"You play Duke and then a couple of cupcakes and then UNC and more cupcakes. It's not like UConn then Nova then Georgetown."

He's right. Even with the BE version of cupcakes Rutgers and Seton Hall (who have both been to the FF), there will probably never be a league like that again. Where 8 or 9 teams are legit NCAA teams. It was great while it lasted.

Football ruined college basketball. And I love football. But through TV and money college football proved to be the death of great hoops leagues with games home and away. Miss it.

I still don't see the thrill for college football to be honest

Home and home hoops are the best. Rivalries can develop very quickly playing two to three times a season.

Call it a deficiency if you must, but I'm proud of never being close enough to a female 'scuse fan to absorb the waft of corndog.

Say no mo'!!

When you live in the south and midwest and have nothing else to do with your free time I guess you become obsessed with college football. That and hunting and drinking Natty Light. It's almost like a disease. At least with the 4-team playoffs starting next year it will be a little better.

What stings the most is that the Big East was dismantled by a horrible football conference (ACC) and a below average one (Big 10). It's amazing that such a crappy product can generate such revenue.

Did you mention to him in this particular year Duke and UNC are not Duke and UNC either? They are a shadow of their past this year………there's a lot of cupcakes in the ACC and I would tend to bet the AAC is better…...

When you're dishonest, do you "see the thrill for college football"? ;)

The ACC is stacked with great hoops programs - Duke, Cuse, UNC, Pitt, Louisville, and even "lesser" programs like NCst, ND, FSU, GT play great basketball as well. BC will continue to be miserable, but outside of that disaster it's simply the best basketball conference in the country.

The "old" Big East was just special and there will not be another conference tourney like that at the Garden. In the quest for ever more money, CR absolutely duck*ed college hoop fans in the Northeast - but, it simply is what it is.

On paper, the ACC has many of the great BE teams. They are missing UConn, Georgetown, Nova, Cincy, Marquette and WV. The question is whether Duke and UNC plus the lesser program add up to what the BE had. I don't think it does in spite of the value of Duke and UNC.

There is always a bump in expectations when there is a perceived improvement in situation. It's my guess that down the road, a lot of fans from schools who have bolted from the BE, are going to wish that CR never happened.

But for now they have reason to celebrate.

And football is not the root cause of problems. It's money and status. If the best bb programs had set up a BCS type cartel things might have played out differently. There is huge money in the NCAA tournament that gets divided amongst a much larger pool than what takes place in football.

You contradict yourself with that statement.

Not at all.

Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri and Texas A&M all left to get out of the control of Texas. The conferences selecting them perceived advantages, but the moves were essentially lateral for those four universities. The conferences taking them gained in football status, but those universities would not have moved if the situation in the B1g 12 had been different. They were tired of being not heard. They don't move if Texas acts differently. Put this in the status category.

The B!g took Rutgers and Maryland for tv sets and not football. Cuse and Pitt were taken by the ACC for basketball and not football. Put this in the money category.

Only WV and Ville were taken primarily for football. In WV's case the Big 12 was desperate to get a replacement for the defections. It was necessity and not football. That conference was treading water. This is a combo of money and football.

The Ville choice was everything football. The football universities in the ACC correctly observed they had to do something quickly to stabilize the conference football wise. The ACC was out of balance football/basketball. Unfortunately for UConn, they were at the valley of their football history and Ville was at it's peak. And BC felt that marginalizing UConn was in it's best interests. Antagonism, fear were the underlying motives in their decision.

Football is not the driver. Money, status (egos, power, antagonism) controlled events. Football was peripheral in many ways.

The ACC never was the Big East and never will be, why do you think the ACC grabbed Big East teams again, again and again.

Add uconn and Georgetown(basketball only) and you got:

Duke, unc, blue bloods

uconn, cuse, Georgetown, Louisville, in the upper tier

Pitt, fsu, nd, gt, are the mid tier

This would be better then the old be right?

Only if you add Florida, Kentucky, Indiana, Kansas, Texas and UCLA as well. That conference would surpass the old BE.

Rick Barnes couldn't even get to the Sweet 16 with Durant, the ultimate underachieving coach in college basketball

Neither has GT but I wouldn't remove them from your list. I guess I should have included Ohio State and Michigan State as well. I was looking for geography as much as anything else. When Texas replaces Barnes, they will be fine. They lead the country in monies coming in from athletics. So they can get whatever coaches they need to get back on track. And they have lots of monies on the academic side. They are ND supercharged. Only a few universities have their power and influence. The problem with this university is that they know this and consequently treat everyone else as pions. Hence the state of the Big12 relative to five years ago. They stink up relationships worse than ND and one has to go a long way to make that statement.

Yea gt hasn't done anything but I saw them mentioned above so I put them there. I would switch them with ncst

At least the old Big East cupcake games were against relatively local teams with whom you had a lot of history and didn't require a lot of effort to find a reason to get up for the game. I'd take a ho-hum Wednesday game against Seton Hall over a ho-hum Wednesday game against Clemson. ACC basketball power is essentially now Duke, UNC, and most of the Big East powers.

Not under Gottfried. And not if Duke and North Carolina have anything to say about things.

As an aside, it will be interesting to see how ECU does in the future. Politically they are low on the totem pole in that state, but they seem to be able to develop a football program better than the three schools ahead of them, at least up until recently. And anyone who thinks football doesn't matter to Duke, NC and NCst are missing the scandal at UNC. Football matters a lot to those schools.
