They will bring in someone new, but these positions can be somewhat flexible in what they cover, as evidenced by the random names they are given (DBO, Assistant DBO, Assistant Athletic Director for Men’s Basketball Operations, Director of Player Development, etc.).

Considering the article Borges posted this morning named Mamadou as a potential candidate that's probably who he's referring to. Taking recent experience from Football, any former player announcing candidacy for a position via Twitter is very likely not actually in consideration.

I think it's more likely the brother of our most recent commit. A new role was alluded to in the Diarra commitment articles

Happy for TB, this could be the start of his journey back to UConn as an assistant someday. Mama or KEA would obviously be good picks for this position, we know it’s mostly to build experience and work your way up anyways.

@aburks41 I’m guessing we’re still awhile away from that conversation with Bazz. Might be insulting to call him now.

Bazz can still make close to 7 figures playing in Europe. Would be leaving a lot of money on the table.

Why would it be insulting to give him a call? Maybe he is ready to settle down instead of having to go back overseas for a paycheck. You never know unless you ask

Wasn’t too long ago he was an NBA player, I’d argue it’s an insinuation he’s not a very good player anymore. But maybe he would rather settle down back in the states.

This isn’t really an on-court coaching job; it’s administrative.

It’s a catch-all position where they interface with every department that somehow touches the student athlete which makes it great for someone just starting. They do everything from making sure the players know their plays to making sure the players are getting to class, meeting their advisors, following the strength staff’s directives, etc. If a player has too many parking tickets, the player development guy is the one talking to the meter maid and the player to resolve it.

They won’t be reassigning any of the on-court coaches here.

And I would suggest that a young guy closer to the players in age, but very responsible and mature, would be a perfect fit. So maybe Diarra gets it.

Also just in case people are curious, this is not a $250k+ assistant type of job. Taliek made $87k last year (all staff salaries are public). Would be a nice starting salary for Mamadou if he ends up sliding into this role

Gonna miss Taliek but great move for him. Plenty of negative to say about Pitino but the guy takes really good care of his assistants and generally seems to care about them a great deal. Pitino is still heavily in RJ Evans's corner even though RJ was only a grad assistant for him for what a year and a half?

I don't think he "led" UConn. Clearly the worst of the starting 5 who couldn't shoot and was pulled out of games during the end at crunch time due to his poor FT shooting.

This is a big loss for us. He was a really active part of our player’s lives. Assistant at Iona? He would have been an assistant here in short order. Danny’s ability to keep people around was once viewed as a strength.

What a weird take. He wasn’t going to get his first assistant coaching job at UConn. This move is perfect for him. He gets assistant experience at a lower level for a great coach and can move up when the opportunity presents itself.

He's going to be an assistant for one of the greatest coaches of all-time. He would be insane to turn it down.

Do you understand the nature of his job? Promoted to assistant at Iona is such a logical step. Would you have preferred Danny say, “hey, let me keep you around for a few years, turn down a great opportunity, and then maybe I’ll give you a promotion to a job you’re under qualified & in experienced for”?

One of the worst things yo can do as a boss is keep good candidates from moving up. A good boss develops and reloads. Keep the same staff for too long and you end up recycling the same ideas. There’s a such thing as positive turnover among staff.

Someone with a great playing background
Who is familiar with grassroots nyc so long to get a job when there are so many with no college
Playing with experience getting asst and in some cases head coaching jobs ?
