Syracuse Postgame Thread

I’ve said this a few times over the past few games: I just love the way Kayleigh motors down the court in transition. Her focused movements, her aggressive stride, it’s really something. It’s like a challenge to opposing teams: “You want to run with us? Fine. Let’s run!”

If she grabs a defensive rebound and she’s got that gleam in her eye, it’s game on.
K9 is a force, deceptive in many ways, especially with a quick first step to the hoop and strong finish. Her defense and body language must be frightening to opponents. So glad she made the move back East.

No one played all 40 minutes. In the 27 minutes Azzi played, UConn outscored Syracuse by 49. To be +53, she’d have to play the
Why when it says "Husky Nan quoted your post" do I feel like I am being called to the principal's office?
Last thought, if UConn scored ZRRO points in the second half, and lost it 33-0,,UConn would have still won the game by 20 points, yikes.

I have a thought as to why Coach Jack MIGHT be showing her unhappiness about the draw.

Syracuse beat Virginia by 19 during the regular season yet the Cavs are going to the Sweet 16. I think she would have liked her chances playing Iowa a lot more than having to get the draw she got. Just a thought.

Wow! To this post game press conference. She is basically saying she is tired of playing Uconn and that Uconn is pretty much unstoppable...

Here are a couple of suggestions:

Rejoin the Big East. You still might have to face UConn, but it wouldn’t be until a later NCAA Tournament round. The downside to this is you will have two or three automatic losses each year.

Start stumping for UConn membership in the ACC. Once this happens you wouldn’t have to face them until a later round. Same downside.

Have the Selection Committee give UConn a bye until the championship game.

We won the game by 53 but our plus/minus is way lower than that? Lol.
Azzi’s MOV pace (Per 40 +/-) was a scorching 74 points.
  • 60 points (23 minutes) in winning time rotations and 144 points (4 minutes) in pocket bridge rotations. &1
The numbers are accurate.
  • Geno and CD don’t play most of their starters (especially not Azzi and Sarah) in the 4th quarter.
  • &1 They also don’t feel the necessity of dressing up dominant wins against opponents, preferring reps on little things or reps for players (e.g. Allie and Jana, Caroline and Ayanna).
  • The Per 40 +/- (MOV pace) augurs for a Top 8/9 consisting of “plug and play” “basketball players”.

First half - Wow! Shades of how we dominated three number one seeds last year. The stars were out for sure, but everyone was on game. If we can repeat this performance we are going to be hard to beat. My favorite play of this game: nearly full court bounce pass by Blanca resulting in easy layup. Second favorite, K9 pull-up jumper and free throw to follow for old fashioned three. Contributions from all directions. Go Huskies!

Just a stunning first half of basketball. This will be one to rewatch again and again.

So much has already been said but I would really like to commend Serah Williams. I know a lot of people have been underwhelmed by her offensive production but she is one of the best defensive bigs in D1 and will stick to a W roster because of it. I was so impressed with her defensive work on Uche.

So thrilled for Azzi. Blanca quietly had an amazing game.

It’s fantastic to see our Huskies peaking at the right time

  • UConn's single-game assist record holder (15, vs. NC State, Nov. 20, 2022) Nika Mũel
Per Uconnhuskies.com

Oops my bad 😥. Joys of being dyslexic. Read and totally forget it was about the March madness. When I was someone listed with more assist. I knew Nika had set a new record. Sorry.😃

I just don't understand having Blanca and Serah on the bench and Caroline and Ayanna on the floor. Serah and Blanca need the minutes. Neither has played a lot this year. We need them to be sharp against the top teams and that only comes from playing. Develop the horses you are going to bring to the derby.
It's loyalty and the desire to not hit a 100. Blanca and Serah are as good as they are getting this season.

There’s already a thread beating up Legette-Jack for her supposed disrespect and lack of worshipful-ness. Take your complaints there

UConn had one of its most impressive outings of the year and this is what people are focusing on 🤦🏼‍♀️

I know many of you don’t enjoy the blowouts.
I love the blowouts. Keeps the blood pressure down and no arguments about “the refs blown calls etc…”

When it’s a blowout, there is no doubt who the better team is.
And this year team?
If they bring their A-game, they will not be beaten.

What an absolutely enjoyable game last night!

Go Huskies!!

Have to respect Syracuse for recruiting some very good young talent. Now, similar to Villanova and other schools at the 25-50 ranking level, their challenge is going to be how to keep them for 4 years.
I think it will be difficult to secure Uche Izoje's services for four years. Izoje was born in 2004, the same year as Serah Williams, which means she isn't a true freshman. Junior players like Madison Booker and Hannah Hidalgo were born in 2005, and even Clara Strack is 13 months younger than her—she was born on November 27, 2005. If she wanted to, Izoje could forfeit her remaining NCAA eligibility and enter this year’s WNBA draft.

Yes, Izoje is 21. We can all remember another star freshman that showed up at Syracuse as a freshman from overseas. Kamilla Cardoso from Brazil may have been the best recruit ever at Syracuse. She lasted but one year and then left for SC where she played on 2 national championship teams and was the 3rd overall pick in the W in 2024.

Izoje will be draft eligible this year as she turns 22 in November. While it might be enticing for her to declare herself eligible for the draft, I would not be surprised if she checks out the portal with the idea of going to a top school for another year or so, then declaring for the draft.

Yes I would be very surprised if she stayed at Syracuse next year.

A couple of things I noticed from attending the game (aside from awe at that first half!)

Coach took Blanca out early. She had passed up an open look and looked a bit tentative. When she returned later, she was the Blanca we all enjoy!

Sarah Strong was mugged all game with only a few calls. Several were quite dangerous. She has got to be sore today. Even in a blowout, the refs need to keep the players safe.

I hear ya but considering the lame committee finds it convenient to bend over backwards to protect conference teams from playing each other in ANY early round (which was fine when their conference schedules had them playing each other twice or more with the conference tournament) when the super leagues of 16-18 only play each other 1 time, maybe the committee should rotate teams during these early rounds.

I find it more irritating she couldn’t acknowledge how well this UConn team played in the first half and only wanted to talk about her ream. She could have shown a touch of grace and acknowledged the defense and shooting.

The Leila Phelia part was touching and I am rooting for that young lady.

Overall, I am ok with Coach Jack but was just hoping for more.
She did conclude the interview with a salute to Geno and UConn! I completely understand her frustration, for the last 32 years no team has advanced to the Sweet Sixteen from UConn's bracket. AMAZING STAT!

Thank you for posting this from the perspective of someone who saw the game in the arena, as I think it's a very important point.
Sarah is a large individual in addition to being a supremely talented player, but she is not invulnerable and impossible to injure.
Quite frequently this year it has seemed that she has gotten very few calls while being dangerously whacked (certainly in yesterday's game). It is dangerous and I hope that Geno has been calling it out behind the scenes. When players realize that they can get away with overly physical play they will, naturally, keep going further and further over the line until someone gets severely injured.
Refs, put a stop to it now!

Legette-Jack is going off on the Committee for sticking her teams in Gampel year after year.
I would like to see Syracuse in a different part of the brackets in a future year.
I would keep them on the same line (e.g. an eight seed) to honor seeding
anaylitics, but... nudge to just a little. It could give the Syracuse
Administration and fans an true sense of the progress of the team under Legette-
Jack. IMHO

Wasn't that a TWO BOUNCE pass from BLANCA to K9? "Beautiful" and
"Awe-dacious"!

Well, to be the best you have to beat the best. With conferences getting some money back depending upon how their teams advance, she has a financial point if not a playing point.

Yes, in 1993 Louisville knocked UConn out in the first round who then lost to Auburn, who advanced to the Sweet Sixteen from that bracket.
