I was at the game. I somehow managed to score a very cheap seat only four rows up from Ryan/Rebecca. In person thoughts:
  • Azzi obviously had an unreal shooting night. I thought she was much more impressive in person than watching on tv.
    • She has perfect shooting form—everything is in one plane. She goes straight up and straight down.
    • Her body control is noticeable as compared to everyone else. She is always on balance no matter which direction she is moving—offense or defense.
    • When dribbling, her eyes are always up. No sneaking a peek at the ball even if in traffic.
    • She moves with purpose and intensity—I hadn’t noticed on tv that she is moving as much as Shade.
    • She has so many ways to get open.
    • This year has done wonders for her confidence. I’m glad she stayed as I think it will serve her well next year.
  • Sarah is a bit like Stewie—you don’t always notice what she contributes and suddenly she is close to a double/double. They both move so languidly that they hardly seem to be trying.
  • Kayleigh has an extra gear that is less noticeable on tv.
  • It’s fun to see KK gather speed at she goes rim to rim for a layup. She really plays so much more in control now.
  • We have a lot of confident ball handlers this year.
  • The one weakness I see with this team is they aren’t an “urgent” rebounding team. Yes, they got a lot of rebounds (Syracuse missed a lot of baskets), but most of team doesn’t go out of their way to get them. This is one aspect Jana brings—she usually has a good number of rebounds for her minutes.
  • Rebecca is very tall. She towered over everyone around her. She spent much of the game with a down jacket around her shoulders unless she was on camera. I was in awe of the number of things they are juggling while calling the game—so many screens and replays and data. Ryan’s main screen is the program screen, Rebecca’s switches back and forth between program and ISO.
I’ve never had a seat in the lower level, let alone so close to the court. Highly recommended—it’s such a different experience.

Huge shout out to the front court for shutting down Uche Izoje in the first half. Serah Williams, especially, was fantastic this game, all over the court, playing with energy and proving to be an immovable wall against Izoje.

I love Jana, and she’s a terrific rebounder, but this game showed the difference in Serah and Jana’s defensive abilities.

I don't understand why last year Geno put Paige back in in her last game at Gample to break her career high and get a well deserved heroes salute and why tonight after Azzi tied her career high in an amazing performance, he did not do the same. If Geno did not realize it one of the assistants should have. Once you do it for Paige, you should do it for Azzi. Very disappointing.
The contrast with Texas and Vic letting Booker in to get her 40. No malice mind you but its not Geno’s MO, at least not since Sales.

A 65-12 halftime score. Have the women ever played like this in any other NCAA Tournament game?

Since you asked .... UConn once scored 94 in one half in a first round tournament game.

Thanks. I remember watching that game but for some reason I thought St. Francis was able to score against us. Guess it deserves a re-watch this week.

I know it wasn’t with the intent to injure, but there were a number of instances when Syracuse players dived for a loose ball taking Sarah’s legs out. Every time I held my breath until Sarah got up on her feet, as the entire season passed before my eyes. 😞
There was one of those in the second quarter wnere I thought the refs should go to the monitor to see about an upgrade. I thought it was dangerous, and after a similar play a few minutes earlier, I thought an upgrade was warranted.

I couldn’t believe how open Azzi was after her first few baskets.

Come on! Keep your eye on the prize. This ain’t a middle of January Big East contest. This is the NCAA tournament!
Let’s stop the game mid-3rd quarter and award Ash her 1000 point ball. If he did that with PB, I’m disappointed.
He’s usually all about respect for the game.

First half was as fine a performance as I’ve ever seen. Maybe equaled but not surpassed,

The defense was incredible but that doesn’t surprise me. The offense blew me away. Put aside Azzi being on fire from three. Syracuse actually played pretty good defense, but UConn made great passes, took care of the ball, and found open looks. Azzi being lights out was icing on the cake.

No other team has a threesome like Sarah, Azzi and Blanca. And KK may be the best pg in the country. We could lose but I really like our chances.

The first half...just a thing of beauty. Syracuse is far from a bad team and still the pressing defense made them look like a a D2 team. Then they got hit by a hot shooting offense facilitated by assist after assist after assist. Just an amazing performance. The second half achieved what it needed to: rest players, no injuries, get back to the locker room and start preparing for North Carolina.

Sarah got us off to a "strong" start. Then my local girl found her groove. This was a great time to tie her career high. I saw Azzi get 38 in the DC City Championship game. She will make the great Paige Bueckers even greater in Dallas. Azzi now has 113 threes, which leads the nation. She needs 8 more to tie KML's UConn season mark.

When people are putting together pre-season lists for next fall, Blanca will be mentioned a lot! She's unique!

Geno felt the same about the first half. Maybe on a par with a couple of others, but right at the top.

Missing the point. It was done for Paige last year. It was already mentioned on TV.
