Syracuse post game thread

To get to where we want to go we have to start winning games like this, and then we need to win games like this consistently.

As far as anyone looking at scores is concerned, this is just the same old UConn.

And the thing is, we had it. What a terribly disappointing loss.

Like everyone else, an extremely frustrating loss, where UConn had all the chances to put the game away, early and couldn't get it done offensively, with a couple of missed passes and a couple of drops. The break on the mixed-up buzz for replay on a fumble call (that never looked like a fumble) in the second half, not only gave them back 2nd down, it also broke momentum and gave the Orange back the 5 seconds they needed to kick the field goal at the end of the first half. The defense had a few big play hiccups throughout so the margin never felt comfortable.

Two big plays to tie the game, but not enough left in the tank to stop the Orange offense in the final 5 minutes.

There were many plays where we can pinpoint that couldve swung the game in our favor. Skyler Bell, Mel Brown, Tyrece Mills stuck out to me big time. Lets get the next one.

Our OC called Edsall style play calling in the second half. We gave this game away. We should have won 24-6 but OC went super conservative with zero trust in Fagnano. The D played great for the most part. This loss is completely on Sammis. He is not a D1 caliber OC. It sucks, but this is a defeat snatched from the jaw of victory.

It’s an unacceptable loss and yes I said this going in. You had a chance to put it in your own hands. Guys didn’t step up when they had to.
Look at it this way. Game shows UCONN has improved to the point, on the field, where football may be viable for a P4 conference. Now the fans need to show out win or lose. That is a huge step up in a couple of years.

Defense punched above it's weight all game and kept giving the ball to the offense to just put anyyyyyy points on the board all second half and they couldn't do it. One blown coverage and the game changed and the offense went even more into their shell. They were selling out on the zone run, gotta have some sort of counter in the play book for that.

It's a
Yeah obviously it sucks but I can appreciate a thriller of a game. I'd rather lose the way we did than not take the game to OT.

Sometimes you can just appreciate a good game instead of feeling upset that your team lost
It's a skill I admire. Id rather feel appreciation than hopeless dejection any day of the week.

In the second half 17 rushes, 17 passes until the final drive. The final drive added 7 more passes.

Edit - one of the rushes in the play-by-play was duplicated... so it was 17-17 before the final drive in the second half.

I meant the babying on this board. He had similar bad throws last week and people waved it off because of the big win.
For all the flowers I previously gave him saying that he proved me wrong, this game is incredibly frustrating. 7th year player and starting QB, you’d think he’d be able to complete some decent passes to wide open players in a must win game.

4th quarter, when you have them on the ropes why in God's name would you let up on offense? Go for the jugular, bring in Evers for set or two just to keep things unexpected and something new for their D to have to ideal with. Why do the most pedictable thing(spamming to Edwards) with that much time left? Bad decision making there.

No we’re not going to be invited to a power conference for keeping it close. These are all wasted opportunities.

Play NOT to lose, GUARANTEED to lose. Defense gave the offense the ball back up 11 how many times? You over here punting like p!@#$ all 2nd half.
Losing programs have no idea how to play with a lead. You’d hope Mora knew that with his tenure.

Up 17-6 with the other teamed pinned at their own 10 with 7 minutes to go. Awful loss. There is no silver lining in this one. All it would have taken at that point was one reasonably successful drive or one defensive stop.

someone on the in-game chat said that Joe F throws well only when there is a perfect pocket. I never noticed this but it checks out, last year this was true too. a GOOD quarterback will put it on the money when the play breaks down and he needs to escape the pocket and find someone. I can't think of a single instance today where JF hit a receiver while improvising (ie. the pocket broke down and he had to scramble some).

if you need perfectly calm seas to do your job, you are not good at your job. but alas, he remains our best hope. I don't see anyone else doing any better for us this year.

The one drive to complain about is the final drive after the first Syracuse touchdown... but that also started with 31 rushing yards before the 3 and out rushing.

I'm wondering what happened in the second half!! Joe Fagnano was good in passing game, but it seemed that he couldn't complete any passes.

That said, it was a game that was listed by the experts as a loss. We lost, but even though there's no moral victories, we took them to overtime and some on Syracuse You tube channel said Syracuse will be us by 40+ points.

Joe is good pocket throwing quarterback but he doesn't throw the ball that well when he is moving in the the pocket.

Yes, but it still doesn’t prevent those of little football thought from saying “we played not to lose”. Oldest trope in the book. It pisses them off because they really had planned to go with “why are we throwing with the lead”. We did not execute on offense. Plain and simple.
