Sweet 16 Games Thread

Houston has never seen a tournament game it didn't try like all hell to give away. Some of this stuff is just so inexplicable you have to pin it on Sampson.
 
Interesting Houston just has trouble winning these games because of their offense. Kudos to B Smith he is a much better player than what happened in the title game and I think we knew that but he is carving Houston apart tonight. I have no issue with both these teams but neither will win the chip this year. Alas it looks like Houston may have won.
 
The home advantage didn't help Purdue with the refs. Great play by Houston but it shouldn't have come down to that.
 
Why in the world did Purdue not guard the inbounder under the basket
 
I watched the play again. Braden Smith, who was guarding the inbound passer, inexplicably left the inbound passer which allowed Uzan to score.

Purdue left the entire paint open on an inbounds play with 3 seconds left. Smith starting by guarding the inbounder then running off was truly bizarre.

It was a good call, but not the genius that people are making it out to be.

Purdue just defended it so poorly that it looked like 4D chess. Smith panicked and opted to run at a man who had no chance of ever getting the ball.

Spectacularly bad D.

Yeah - Smith just went rogue there because there’s no way you’d leave the paint open in a tie game by design. You’ve heard about people trying to take hero shots on offense. He tried to be the hero on defense. They ended up with a great two-man trap in the corner against a guy without the ball.

I wonder if Houston picked up something on tape and that was their Plan A - or if it was just a good improv/read by their guys.

Improv being the guy steps a foot forward and becomes wide open under the basket.

After he inbounded the ball Purdue basically gave them two points. All-time brain fart on Smith.
 
Braden Smith had 30 assists to 5 turnovers in his last two sweet 16 games. He assisted every single Purdue basket in the second half and probably should've had 20 assists. Uzan fully extended his arm on the game winning attempt and Smith ended up on his back in the most obvious push off. Houston got a do over and now people are bashing Smith because Cryer came around uncovered and Smith went out to cover him.

I've never seen one team get all the calls in the first half and then the other get every call in the second half like that, but it's pretty much what happened.

I'm a huge Kelvin Sampson fan, but these late game implosions have become a regular occurrence with his teams in the tournament. Tonight they just stopped running offense after going up ten and only made two field goals in the last eight minutes against a Purdue team that isn't exactly a defensive juggernaut.

I also didn't understand the constant trapping on Smith. I know that's what they do, but it didn't make sense against a distributor of his caliber. I would've switched that match-up, forced him to be a scorer, and then overhelped on the other guys if I needed to.
 
What a boring March Madness. No Cinderellas or big upsets past the second round. 1-2 matchups for the entire Elite 8.

Thank the Johnnies for being different at least. How they swiped that #2 seed is bewildering

You mean the player cutting to the basket for the winning layup? If Smith doesn’t jump to the cutter he probably scores.



I went to bed so I missed the only good game of the night, but it looks like a heckuva play.
