OT: Still Great, just different

I know I'm probably in the minority but I loved Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio. Great with Ozzy as well but I'm a big Dio fan all the way back to Rainbow days. His voice just appeals to me more and is just better quite frankly. Both albums Heaven and Hell and Sign of the Southern Cross are absolute bangers.

Iron Maiden
Love Maiden but they weren't quite as established as AC/DC was with Bon Scott before he passed away. I think they only had two albums and they hadn't really blown up yet. When people think of Maiden they think of Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris(and Eddie of course), not Paul Di'Anno. AC/DC can have a Greatest Hits record with both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson.

James Bond!
Sean Connery . . . Daniel Craig

Sean Connery was the master of course but I really like Daniel Craig the best. The movies are very different today, more serious and less campy.
Disagree on The Office. It just wasn’t the same once Michael left and I lost interest. I loved that show.

DO agree with Daniel Craig. Sean Connery was the GOAT but Craig’s movies were solid. Everyone in between was meh although Goldeneye was one of my favorite video games of all time.

No band has ever pulled off the "new lead singer" better than AC/DC. Back in Black out of the shoot. Unreal. Both singers were incredible.
I'm a big fan of AC/DC but I always felt Brian Johnson had to work too hard to sing in that manner. It's probably not the case because if it were that difficult, he wouldn't have been able to do it for so long. But it does look painful. Bon Scott had a very distinctive voice and I think Johnson tried to copy it.

The jeans though...

Blink 182
Tom DeLonge left and was replaced by Matt Skiba from Alkaline Trio from 2015-2022. It just wasn't Blink without Tom because they had such a unique sound. They still managed to put out some decent tunage but Mark Hoppus had to carry them. Tom returned and all is well again.

The trio of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker is just a lot of fun. Travis on the drums is awesome.

I would suggest that Genesis going to Collins was comparable. Far more commercially successful with Collins.

Bon Scott was a Brian Johnson fan and wanted him to replace him.

I love them both but Bon had a great eye for talent, Brian Johnson is even better than Bon IMO.

I did not know that. so did Bon Scott pull over on the highway to hell and phone the boys "go get that bloke from Gordie"

This first vid is catchy

Well I took some liberty saying he wanted him to replace him but the first the band heard about Brian Johnson was from Bon who was a fan.

Saw AC/DC from a box at MSG maybe 8-9 years ago with Axl filling in for an ailing Brian Johnson. Axl was absolutely amazing on vocals and refused to take center stage. He spent most of the time near the drum kit and let Angus lead. Really, really good show.

Yeah, I kinda got that. Where is the authority @August_West in this thread? I give those bands credit in the old days. They're out there performing and the audience is sitting there like they're at a funeral service. The Goodbye Love video.

Some lead singers are so unique that bands simply couldn't replace them. GNR didn't lose Axl but he was certainly one of those lead singers.

As an aside, it reminds me of the 2012 HOF induction ceremony which included the Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys. The Boys didn't perform because Adam Yauch - MCA had just passed away at age 47. These fellas filled in which I thought was Kool. I pasted where it kicks into high gear

Chili Peppers for good measure because they rock

This team is constantly being compared to last years team, which got compared to 23 which was compared to some Calhoun teams, etc... All those teams are different.
Here's a game to give us a little perspective.

Choose from these categories:
1) tv shows/movies
2) bands
3) sports teams

Where some seemingly drastic changing of the guard actually led to either no change in quality/or an upgrade.

Me? I prefer cheers with Rebecca and Woody. Sorry Diane and Coach.
The ratings for Cheers definitely dipped the year after Shelly Long left the show.

We got a little derailed here and I think this post qualifies. Keeping on the topic of replacements.

I am by no means a fan of this group, but Drew Bledsoe was replaced by a guy who turned out to have a pretty good career.
I'd actually thought in that direction after I re-redirected from TV shows to bands, but I haven't followed football closely in too long to recall if Montana & Young, or Favre & Rodgers were directly consecutive, after my first football memories were Connelly to Tittle. There are probably more (Sayers->Payton?), but, again, I didn't want to start looking things up, and I'd decided that Lowell George was where I'd draw the line on bands, not mentioning Duane Allman, or making obscure reference to the Butts Band, or dismissing the Foo Fighters, or wondering about Dave Alvin before the Blasters, bands populated with Modern Lovers alums, and way too many permutations across way too much cultural terrain.

I’ll throw in John Ritter and Tim Allen for funny men. Big Genesis fan and prefer the earlier proggy stuff but I’m not sure is because of Gabriel so much as the music. Although Mama was my fav song for awhile, I gravitate towards Firth of Fifth and Suppers Ready a lot. For another proggy band, I’d say Rutsey —> Neil Peart worked out pretty well for Rush.

I always trusted Bryan Ferry and Manzanera to make great records. I'm glad Richard Hell and ENO left or we'd never have their solo stuff. Tosh needed his own band, The Move sound nothing like Secret messages ELO but both these bookends and everything in between is classic. And...Representing the Mambo happens to be my 2nd favorite feat record (my favorite: Little Feat-the first one)

Thx for letting me talk about this stuff (I can't with a straight face pretend that Keith and Mick aren't the Rolling Stones)
Unexpected and most enjoyable response.

The 1972-74 Feats trio of releases is my favorite, same time period, applying as well for Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan, come to think of it. Studio releases by the Stones dropped off after Exile, until Some Girls

Since Genesis and Peter Gabriel are repeated, this is a great montage video. Talk about hitting it out of the park, grand slam style, 7/4 rhythm
